Charles was an exceptional person.
I worked with him for several years in the Emergency Dept/Duke University where he was one of the officers in the squad based there in the ED. He was a strong, quiet, kind and humble person. He was willing to go the extra mile to assist us nurses, while dealing with a threatening situation.
He was soft spoken, professional, and personafied not just what a law enforcement officer should be, but what a fine man and father should be. He spoke often of his family, and his hopes for them.
While he was deployed overseas, my children prayed for him by name, every night. My husband is a 29+ year vetren of law enforcement, and my father was Special Forces/OSS, so I felt I had a double bond to remember Charles in our prayers, and ask God to protect him, and keep him safe.
What an irony that he survived that year, yet returned to the states to die on duty, while responding to backup a fellow officer. If the public only realized we are truly in a war here at home, and the loss of life is just as great here, as overseas. It's just not talked about.
Charles, You will be missed and I trust you are at peace with your Maker.
Respectfully,
