I "HONOR" your years of service, as a police officer, as a US Marine Corps veteran, and a US Army Reserves veteran of the War on Terror. I commend your commitment to the security of this great nation. You are a true HERO in every sense of the word,.. there is no nobler thing then to lay down your life for a brother.. and that is what you did when responding to back up another officer.
I did not know you in life, but I still call you Brother, for you are my Brother " in blue ".
I will pray for your family, look down on them and wrap your wings of "Blue" around them and help them in this terrible and dark time.

+ Rest Now My Brother, We Will Take The Watch From Here +

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last
(Author unknown)

+God bless all the men and women in blue.+
And may God bring all our troops home safe to their families.

Deputy Sheriff Alan Lazarus #3820
Cook County Sheriff's Department, Cook County IL.

CJ was an officer I worked with at Duke for the past few years. As a nurse in the ER, I rely on the officers to protect me when things get out of control. Everytime I worked with CJ I always knew I had a friend behind the badge. He always had sure we were safe and never let anyone treat us bad. I will never forget when CJ came back from over seas and showed us the videos of all of his fellow soliders and how proud I was of him that he made it home safe. As officers these people protect us and keep us safe. CJ was a great officer, person, andd friends. I am so sad to know that he is not with us now. So, love on your friends and family tonight and forever and always thank your officers. May God bless you CJ and keep your family in his thoughts as we all will.

Officer Callemyn was truly an unselfish and dedicated officer of his department. He was always there to back up a fellow officer, which is ironic that that is what led to his untimely death.
I worked with you for about a year and you were truly a good friend. I will always remember Monday Night Football at the Ale House. May you rest in peace and walk forever in the comfort of God.

I never had the privilege of meeting Ofc Callemyn, but as a former Marine and current police officer myself, I feel I can attest to his character. Charles was and is a member of not one but two very special fraternities...The US Marine Corps and the Durham Police Department.
When I graduated from boot camp, one of my drill instructors told us "There will be wars and in war Marines will die, but as Marines you will live forever in the name of the Corps". Charles may be gone physically from our world but everytime you hear the Marine Corps hymn or see a DPD patrol car glide by on patrol....HE'S THERE.
From your extended family here in Michigan, God Speed Charles!!

HEROS IN LIFE, NOT DEATH

To those who never knew him, I'd like to tell you who Charles Callemyn was;

Charles was a man in every sense of the word...100% testosterone, as we jokingly discussed. He was a real man's man yet he was the appitimy of what God made a man to be! He was a devoted father, always putting "THE BOYS" first and foremost in his life. He was a family man, always there for the family he loved and admired, dearly. He was a dedicated friend to those he cared about and the helping hand to anyone in need. He was a true protector, always watchful even off duty. He was also a hero.

He was a hero, to those who didn't know him, for his life of service. But, to those who were blessed to be considered a friend, he was a hero for the person he was. He was a joker, always making people laugh, most of the time, until their stomachs hurt and they were in tears. He was a bluntly honest - if you didn't want to hear his opinion on something, you didn't ask him the question. LOL. He was also a "goofball," as his sister called him - if something could happen, it generally happened to him! His brothers at the DPD lovingly called him "Calamity" and, boy, did it fit! =D He also had the most amazing heart! He showed respect and caring to everyone he met but, for a select few, he showed his depth.

I am truly honored to have been one of those select few. He was perfect in his imperfections and was the first to admit them. His years of service came with a price...living a hell, we as civilians, will never experience. Although he was affected by it, he didn't let it change the man he was inside. He had more character than most yet was his worst critic. He survived the war and survived being dragged two blocks just last year, on a stop-gone-bad, walking away with minor scraps and scratchs along with, as he laughingly told me, a bruised ego. =D Through all the trials and tribulations he faced in his life, he never lost sight of being able to laugh and find humor in every situation and looked within to better himself where he felt HE was lacking. He had a heart of gold and was a treasure I will cherish forever.

Charles Callemyn was an amazing man. I do not write these words today to honor his memory. He heard me say these words to him many times in the course of the past few months. I write these words so that YOU may know a little bit more about your brother in blue. He was not just a hero for dying in the line of duty, but for living with such integrity, strength, love, loyalty and faith. Yesterday, I attended the funeral of my best friend, a friend I loved beyond measure, unconditionally, just as he loved me. But, I do know that I will see him again as he has a new job now...a Guardian Angel to us all! I used to pray for Charles and all of those serving and protecting. Now, I pray for all of us left behind loving, respecting, and morning the loss of our hero, brother and friend!

I hope I've given you a glimpse of the man I was blessed to know. When you say your prayers tonight, for all of those protecting us around the world, please, add the loved ones Charles left behind as there were too many to name.

May God protect and keep you all!!!

Officer Callemyn, you lost your life while responding to assist another officer. For your efforts, you are a true hero.

Thank you for your time serving not only North Carolina, but the United States. For that too, you are truly a hero.

Lastly, for the time you gave at Duke, we in the academic law enforcement community have lost a family member. Though you were with the city 2 years, you were a part of this nuclear family for 8.

I know you will always be with and a part of those who know and love you.

God Bless and Rest in Peace, Brother.
