Reflections for Lieutenant Dexter Holcomb

Dexter, we all still miss you but know you are having a wonderful time there in heaven with Jesus. I know your Dad is enjoying your company. I can just imagine you and your Uncle Kenneth talking about firefighting and deer hunting.

Dexter, Chip and I were talking about you the other day and it brought a smile to my face. When I first started at Oxford you were my lieut. and you took me under your wing and always watched out for me and I appreciated that then and will always. I miss being on duty training my k-9 and you banging on the door scaring me and me turning around to see your big smile through the window in the door. Rest in peace Dexter you are thought of often!

It doesn't get any easier. I miss you more every day. You have had so many honors and they are very, very appreciated and deserved. It's just ashame that you weren't honored while you were alive. 21 years of service and you only missed one day. That's only because You, me and baby Adam all had the same awful virus. You would have dragged yourself into work, but You wanted to take care of Adam and me. Every man out there should strive to be as wonderful as you are. You're son, Adam is following in you're footsteps. He is a wonderful young Man. He has your and my blood in his veins and GOD IN HIS HEART! What more could you ask for. Cassidy talks about you all the time. She misses you throwing her up in the air and catching her. Her heart is pure and We will all be together again.

It's been a year since GOD called you home. A year of tears and heartache. A year of first birthdays, holidays and our 20th wedding anniversary without you. Everyone keeps telling me that it will get easier. Well it's not. We miss you. Not a day goes by that I don't long for you to hold me and tell me that everything is going to be alright.
GOD's strength and love have brought us this far. And I know one day, I'll get that hug I'm longing for and see that beautiful smile that stole my heart.
We'd like to thank everyone for their cards, letters and most of all... prayers. Our GOD is an AWESOME GOD. He has prepared a beautiful mansion for us and that wonderful Man is there waiting for us to join him, and we will someday.

My Dear Brother, The holidays have come and gone. It was so hard without you. We think of you each and everyday. We remember the good times, share in each other pains. We know you want us to go on with life here, for tears and sadness is not what you would want. I am proud we had so many special times in our life together while here on this earth, for one day we will share special times again, up there in that wonderful place. I read this poem and thought of what you had said to me during the time of our father's passing. It gave me great peace, so I want to leave it here for others to read and understand why we go forward with life here. Not only did you leave us with the assurance of seeing you once more, left us your wife, son and daughter (Sharon, Adam, and Cassidy who have a life to full fill. God's grace is good, even in hard times. You told me that, remember? So here I stay. This poem is by Garanett Ann Schultz:
God reaches down to hold your hand, To help our hearts to understand. Forever near when we believe, In all the help our minds receive. He's always close in times of need If we but let him take the lead. God reaches down in tender love and lends his peace from there above.
He's with us through the longest night; We're in His gentle, caring sight. He speaks to us in loving tone, And shares the moments we're alone. Life never would be quite the same without his help through hurt and pain. A part of every day we live, so much of hope and faith to give, His saving grace lends true renown.... In Love, tis God who reaches down.

the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord...Psalm 33:5
I want to take while still here, for I know that is what you would say. I Love You...brother, but for now here I stay.
Your Little Sister,
Sandra

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Uncle Dexter, you were honored at a football game last night. Mom said it was beautiful. I didn't go but you knew you were my hero. Ema is here now and how beautiful she is. I promise you to teach her as I promised I would teach and raise Izak. Jason and I both are starting college this January. I have not decided what to major in yet. I am down to two but I don't know which one I wanna do. I wish you were here to give me the advice that I need to figure that one out. :) I am down to accounting and business or criminal justice and criminology. I am going to double major and it will not take but 1 more semester. I am going to see Aunt Sharon tomorrow and will ask for her advice. She has become the new advisor for me and she has almost gotten you beat. :) It is just as helpful. I love you and miss you more than words can explain. I promise to stand strong and take care all the family I can for you.

It was so sad when I heard about Dexter's death. I feel as if all police officers are a member of my family also. I had a brother who served with Oxford for 5 years before going to Talladega where he spent the next 21 years and was promoted to Captain one year before he passed away.Dexter was such a wonderful policeman, but more than that he was a great person and friend. Dexter, the men and women you left behind at the OPD now have the watch and you can rest in peace because you trained them well. So here's to Captain Randy Hawkins and Lt. Dexter Holcomb and all of those officers (my brothers) who have been called Home too soon. There should be more men like them. Always remember; Never, never forget. A final 10-42 I salute you my friend. Valerie Hawkins Sims

8/22/07-It's been 6 months and 6 days since I lost you. Your birthday is Friday and our 20th anniversary is Tuesday. My heart aches for you. I don't understand why you were taken from us. How do I live without you? Dear GOD please continue to give me strength. Dexter, I'll see you at our mansion in heaven, when GOD says it's time for me to leave this world. I know your proud of our wonderful son and our beautiful daughter. They miss you, but we are strong Christians and we will be together again. I love you, my darling. I was looking at our wedding photos today. We looked so young. The kids got a big kick out of them. Our love is exceptional. Time has not weakened it and never will. You are my soulmate.

Dexter, I still see that precious sweet smile. You will always be alive in our hearts. When the family talks about your wonderful character as a husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin, police officer and public citizen, and of all our memories of you we are keeping you close to us. Above all the other titles we can relate to you, I am so happy I can call you a Christian. I know you accepted Jesus as your saviour in your teen years and we will see you face-to-face again. I will get to feel that special bond with you again. But until then I will think of how you always made me feel like a very special aunt. You truly will always be my special nephew. I love you dearly.
