Mike I wish we could have had more time. It's only in talking to those who loved you so much that I learned that we had a lot in common. I would have enjoyed the chance to get to know you better than I am able to when I am just your dispatcher.
You were fast becoming one of my favorite deputies.
God Bless and rest in peace. We will miss you 102.

Brothers and sisters, today we laid our fallen comrade to rest. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the men and women who participated and attended the very touching memorial and graveside services. It is a testament to not only the man, but that of those who wear the same shoes and walk the same beat. We are all the same on the inside no matter where we work or serve our communities.

To me, Mike is the definition of the word HERO. A hero is not merely defined by one heroic act. A hero can also be defined by the way that they live their lives and serve those around them. Mike was not only a good COP, but he was also a DEDICATED SOLDIER, and a true FRIEND. I am proud to be able to call Mike my friend. He was always there when I needed him without hesitation. Although very young in his LE career, he was always striving to better himself and would really listen when you showed him the error of his ways.

When Mike passed I wrote him this letter:

Mike,

I just wanted to write you a quick note to say what a blessing it was to work/play with you. I will cherish the late night official and unofficial "training sessions" that we participated in. There were many nights when your house was the safest place to be in this area at least.

I know how important your family is to you and I/We will make this promise to you. Although your family probably did not know this, but when you entered into the world of law enforcement they gained hundreds of thousands of other children into their brood. They do not have to know our names, remember our birthdays, or buy us Christmas presents, but we will always be there for them. I/We make that vow to honor you.

I miss you terribly my friend,

Chuck

I only met Mike once during a night shift roadside. After we went our separate ways, I thought to myself what a humble, geniune, friendly person Mike was. I was hoping he would be assigned closer to my patrol area so I could work with him more and get to know him. His passing saddened me immensely. My sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends and co-workers. May you rest in peace brother.

Goodbye Mikey & Thanks. Thanks for your sacrifice. Thanks for ALL of your years of service to your family, friends, co-workers, & fellow citizens. And most of all, thanks for being you. Whether it was standing up for the little guy (& few could stand up as tall & imposing as you!) or just being a gentle man with a heart of gold when few others had the time or inclination to care, Thanks. Thanks for seeing beyond the facades & masks, into the hearts of those of us you served, whether we appreciated it or not. And thanks too for lending me your car on those weekends when I really needed to "escape".

And finally, to Mike's family; Thanks for giving your son, brother, & uncle to us for all these years of varied service - even when we weren't grateful!

Goodnight Mike, Godspeed, & we'll see you in the morning!

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Estes and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Deputy Estes has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Deputy Estes, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Estes is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
