REST IN PEACE,FELLOW BROTHER IN BLUE

P.A. Dupont
IRVINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT

January 13, 2007

The policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
No Lord. I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough...
and sometimes I've been violent
because the streets are awful tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod,
as the policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman.

You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

Tyron,
I hate to say this job we do can make us cynical and less than compassionate. I remember when you told me you were going to the academy and how you were trying to play it cool even though your excitement was showing through. It's times like that which remind me of my own excitement and why I got involved in law enforcement in the first place. I was proud of you that day.
I remember meeting your son for the first time and watching the way you spoke to him with love. I was proud of you that day.
I remember learning that you graduated from the academy and I was disappointed in myself for not making it my business to be there for the ceremony. I was proud of you that day.
I just knew we would cross paths on the job one day and I would get the chance to proudly introduce you to my partner as a friend of mine.
When I got the phone call that Sunday I felt like I was stabbed. I wasn't that close to you but I felt like I lost a brother that day. Then I quickly realized I felt that way because I DID lose a brother that day.
I hope your parents understand your death was not in vain. Many an officer will remember you and be that much braver or stronger in a serious situation. When we lose one of our own, it makes us that much stronger. I thank your parents for raising the man and father they did as well as the officer they did.
Your son lost a fine father that day. People will tell him about you and your bravery that fateful day. People will also tell him about your wit and sense of humor as well as the intimate things most of us do not know.
I can only hope I cross paths with him one day when he is a young man so I can tell him something I truly regret I never told you to your face before you suddenly left us.
I will tell him how PROUD I was of you.

P.S. - I know I can speak for the entire law enforcement community when I say we all seek swift justice for this cowardly thief who stole you from your friends, loving family and beautiful son.
