Reflections for Trooper Calvin Wayne Jenks

Your memory will always be with us, Cal, and our prayers are with your wife, Sarah and all of the family. I know that our last conversation was to the effect that you be careful and safe on your hazardous job but all of the precautions in the world wouldn't change the terrible outcome, unfortunately. We love you and will miss you forever and may GOD speed, we will see you soon enough so continue to help out in Heaven. Now to the residents of the Columbia area, thank you for the outstanding show of love and respect during the funeral of this young man, I have never in my lifetime seen this much caring.
Love you, Cal
Uncle Dave, Aunt Shelly, Jason, and Patrick

Rest in peace Fellow Officer and thank you for your sacrifice

Deputy Sheriff
Hamilton County Sheriff's Dept.

January 13, 2007

The policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
No Lord. I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough...
and sometimes I've been violent
because the streets are awful tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod,
as the policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman.

You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

Gulf County Sheriff's Office

They told us to take our morning bands off tonight at midnight and I will but I want you to know I'll be wearing one over my heart for a lot longer. I was blessed to know you and have the oppertunity to be your friend and brother 404.

Calvin,
This is still all so unreal and hard to comprehend. Maybe it is so hard because we know you are in a better place than we are. Thank you so much for all you did for our state and our community. I am sure you are patrolling the streets of gold at this time. Rest assured we will all meet again and what a beautiful day it will be. We will miss you this year at the race track in Memphis but rest assured you will be thought about. Again, thanks again for making our streets a little safer. We know that you will be our guardian angel as we all mourn at this time and as we try and understand why things like this happen to people like you.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of such an outstanding young man. My greatest sympathies to his wife, family, and colleagues. My own agency suffered through losing one of our own last year and while I miss my friend greatly every day, I am also reminded of his constant desire to make sure we all took care of each other on and off the street.

Please keep the memory of Trooper Jenks alive as an example of what is right about our society and make sure his wife and family are never forgotten.

God Bless you, Trooper Jenks. Thank you for protecting our families and caring about the community.

Such a tragedy to see a young, energetic trooper with a promising career taken away far too early. Trooper Jenks THANK YOU for your service to us. Your family, both personal and professional will forever be in my prayers. Godspeed 4462.

To the family of a never forgotten Trooper. Trooper Jenks was a outstanding individual. He would bring individuals into the jail, and would love to talk to whoever was on duty at the time. I talked To Trooper Jenks on Thursday before his passing on. I know Trooper Jenks was a well liked person and had many friends, This could be told by the number of law enforcement and civilians that attended his funeral. Trooper Jenks will never be forgotten and his family will always remain in my prayers. The Heavens above have gotten them a GREAT one this time.

I personally knew Trooper Jenk's and talked to him numerous times, actually I spoke to him the night before. I was working the night of the shooting it was a horrible experience. Us as dispatchers do not get the whole conclusion of what has occured, but that night we stayed for as long as we could. My prayers go out to his wife and his family. I truly know how it feels because my uncle was a Lauderdale Co. Deputy that was gunned down helping out a stranded motorist. He was truly an Angel sent from heaven.

I was unfortunate enough to be the Tipton County dispatcher on duty when Trooper Jenks was shot. It was the most difficult call I have ever had to dispatch in my more than five years of dispatching. Calvin, you will be missed. I wish I could have done something to save you, but by the time we were called, it was too late. To Mrs. Jenks, I am so sorry for your loss. Such a horrible thing to happen to such a wonderful person. My children met Calvin the day before he died, on the scene of an accident, and they thought he was "so cool" and I know that he was a great Trooper. I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that he was a good man.

Tipton County 911

Hey Calvin, Just wanted to let you know how proud I am of you. You always had a smile on your face and were always fun to talk to. Like many others have said "Talk to him for five minutes and you have known him a life time" My biggest memories of you are when you were seven and younger, before you moved to Tennessee. Lots of fond memories. The stories at your service about the "In door baseball and In door bow hunting" were great. While they were being told, I could picture you plain as day as if I were there when it happened. I was able to see you several times over the years and got to see you grow and always knew that you would do the best you could in anything that you did. Thank you cuz for protecting your community, your state, your country. I will love you forever and will never forget the sacrifice you made to make this a better world for all of us to live in.

As the wife of a deceased Birmingham, Alabama, police officer and the sister of a retired Tenneessee State Trooper, I have been so very sad after hearing of this tragic loss, and I have his wife and family in my prayers every day. It is so senseless for this to have happened when he had such a wonderful future ahead of him. I know he will never be forgotten for the hero he truly was.

Rest in peace brother officer. Continue on your watch from heaven as you take on the roll of Guardian Angel watching over your fellow officers who remain on this rock in a time of chaos and uncertainty, and thank you for your sacrafice.

Thank you Trooper Jenks for all that you did for the residents of Tennessee. I, like many other people, have travelled Highway 14 hundreds of times, as my family owns a business in Tipton County. You paid the ultimate sacrafice, and for that, you will never be forgotten. Enjoy your beat on Heaven's streets.

To Sara Beth, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling, but please know that there are thousands of Calvin's "extended family" praying for you. Your pain is felt by every other officer and their family.

The family is in my prayers every night as well as fellow officers. The dangers are known before you take your step forward into the academy yet you push on.. you lose friends, family, fellow officers, and or you may one day have to take a life yourself, and lets not even get into that very first traffic stop after the news, yet here you are.. and you push on. Calvin is my husbands cousin that I have not had the honor of meeting yet, I have only been in the family a few years now, but I could not be more proud to call him a hero and a fellow officer. God speed big guy
