Reflections for Police Officer Daniel S. Bessant

Danny Boy,
I thought about calling you for enchiladas and cervezas last night, but then I thought I had better not bother that creepy lady who has your phone number now. We had a good time with friends and some laughter, so hard we cried, just a little. That's what I miss the most. That and going out surfing just to hang out and justify Juanita's rolled tacos afterwards...don't worry, Richie and I are still doing that. Miss you buddy.

Just ran into Pastor Steve Danny and we were remembering you. Sgt. Browning just fininshed his last week of work lastnight and you could tell he was ready. We lost a good man 12-20-06 and we lost a good leader lastnight, one we can all aspire to be like. I truly believe your death as well as Tony's took a toll on Rich and he is ready to hang it up and relish in the great memories of you two as well as others. Watch over hom and all of us as we venture beyond the day....Love you bro, and have a J&C (diet) for us....

It's because of officers like you that I even wanted to be involved in law enforcement. Life has thrown a few curve balls for now so I will do our country and your memory proud by serving on a much larger scale for the next few years. You are a constant reminder to me to always push harder, go faster and never give up.

Danny,
Yesterday Richie and Renee brought baby Danny by to see his Great Grandparents. Grandma said "he sure is a handsome dude!" We are all in awe every time we see him. Danny we are missing you so much, but we do know that you are here with all of us. Not a day goes by that we are not missing you and thinking about you. With all our hearts we "Love You and always have and always will!"

It has been a long 2 years. Last night I was telling somebody about our trek across L.A. in tuxedos at 3:00 AM after Tom's wedding. It made me laugh and sad at the same time. That night was the first time I saw you for the mature, experienced and sharp officer you had become instead of the little boy I watched grow up or the overzealous young rookie I had thought you to be a few years earlier. I wish I had been able to have more adventures with you but am grateful for our long conversation that night and the family fishing/hunting trips when you kept us entertained with your renditions of Larry the Cable Guy and well fed with mass quantities of smoked beef. I think of you often and wish you were still here to become the fine supervisor and father I know you would have been.

Officer Dan served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who
knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this
earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a
place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life
(John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, Officer Dan. My heart goes out to your
loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can.
I've read 8 pages of reflections and alot of them are from your buddy Jonathan. You two were tight and he was blessed by your friendship. Hug everyone who misses you today.

I got to hang out with your boy the other night...he's doing great. Smart, happy and healthy. He cracks me up with the things he says. Chattering away, answering questions and everything. The funny one is when you ask him how old he is and he says, "BIG". Well, yes Wyatt that's true you are big...in fact bigger than most 5 year olds...he really is an an incredible kid. I'm trying to convince Mom that he needs some regular beach days with Uncle Jon this summer...especially because I need someone to hang out with on my days off. Anyway, I miss you everyday...it doesn't get any easier...I'm going to go watch some stupid comedy and have a Tecate...

To the Family of Officer Bessant,
I just recently saw an online photograph from just outside the courtroom trial of the offender in Dan's murder. It immediately brought me back to the article I had previously read about Dan in a law enforcement magazine. It also reminded me of the chance encounter I had with Dan's parents and a family friend in the elevator of the host hotel during National Police Week in 2007...and then walking to their room to borrow toothpaste. How do our survivor's paths seem to cross as we wander this earth without our fallen loved one? In the end, all we have is eachother. We will never forget Dan, your family, his colleagues and all those left behind...never. God Bless You All.

Dan-
The verdict is in and you accomplished exactly what you set out do- break up the group of people who were responsible for so much pain and terror. Those responsible for your death will never have freedom to victimize another again. You will continue to remain an inspiration to many. God bless you and rest in peace.

To the Mother, Family, Friends and Co-workers of Officer Bessant: I know that you are glad this part of the ordeal is over. I hope it gives you some comfort that this "offender" will not ever be free again.
I know that when you went through the trial, your thoughts went back to the day that this event happened. This will always be, you will remember the last time you saw Dan, talked with him, hugged him and told him that you loved him. The holiday's are coming and I know that will be a hard time for you, again.
Please know that others share your pain that have already walked that path. We will walk it with you forever.
God bless you and may He continue to guide your path and give you the comfort that you need. He is always there for you and helping you through. He has helped so many others before.

Guilty. Justice has been done I guess. It won't bring you back but hopefully your family finds a small amount of comfort knowing that your killer will never be free again. Rest in peace brother.

Hi Dan,

You have been in my thoughts A LOT lately and I felt it necessary to just "check in" and say Hi. I was going through some things at my house and found the card and *$ card that your family gave to all of us staff members at the PCPA graduation and it just sent chills up my spine. Your family was so kind and generous to do that for us despite all that they have been and are going through and I think I will carry that *$ card around in my vest pocket like I do with special things that I hold close to my heart. (Pictures of my family, my favorite bible verse, etc)I have scrolling pics on my CAD and there are a few of your dedicated class 15's graduation. One of the pics is the speech that your Dad gave us and he is holding Wyatt and Wyatt has this IMPISH look in his eye.. It is too cute.

Then I had the pleasure of meeting Drew's brother-in-law on a call. His friend was the victim of a 459 veh and the two of them and my partner and I laughed and joked for about 45 minutes... Shhhhhh don't tell supervision! LOL. He had a memorial sticker for you on the back of his vehicle and I noticed it right away. We talked about your family and you and I just wanted to let them know that they have also been in my thoughts and with Halloween just passing, it made me wonder what crazy little costume Wyatt was going to wear and then it made me shed a tear that his Daddy had to watch him from above and not be down here with him in person. Drew's brother-in-law gave me a whole stack of the memorial stickers and I have been sharing them with my partners here at work and at the academy... I swear those things are like giving away diamonds!!! Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us. I hope that your family and friends are doing well and I hope that they know that they are thought of and prayed for.

Take care and I will talk to you again soon.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! It looks like a fine day for fishing as I look out the window here...clear sky, crisp morning and flat water. The lobster season has also been good so far...We should have a gathering of sorts and eat lots of delicious treats from the Sea! I think we could probably manage to come up with some sort of punch to serve at this disorganized event as well. Miss you.

Dan it has been a long time since I have posted but it doesn't mean I haven't thought of you often. Today I talked about you in a class I was teaching and a lump still swells in my throat every time. If I can instill your spirit and love for the job in one student I will consider my new career as a teacher to be a success. Another friend has recently passed while, like you, doing what he loved. Former SAPD officer and retired Border Patrol pilot Jim Bland was the co-pilot of a Leer Jet that crashed last week. Welcome him aboard and give him my regards.
