Pap: I have never bin so proud of someone I never got the chance to meet. I was born in 1994 3 years after you passed but growing up I've hear all kinds of stories and the memories that my dad and my uncle have had with you and how great of a man you where. I know your watching over me and have helped me out a time or two in a difficult situation. You'll be happy to know you have 10 grandchildren and now have 3 great grandchildren and we are all proud to call you our Pap! You where a hero you are a hero your my hero! I love you!

To the family of Thomas Herron, I was reading through cards from when my husband died (Capt Thomas Brooks pbf 02/14/95. 17 engine) . Came across a beautiful and comforting letter from Mrs Herron. How fresh your families grief must have still been then. I hope you get some comfort knowing your kindness brought some to my family. We all know time heals and numbs nothing, there is a hole in our hearts forever. Your husband and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today marks the 24th anniversary of the tragic deaths of you and your partner, Officer Grill. Last Sunday marked the 24th anniversary of two men I knew and respected who died in the same manner, although in their case it was a tree with which they collided.

The loss felt by all who knew them was like a punch in the gut, a phrase all too often used, but true. In reading the posts by your two sons, I empathize with their pain. Though the loss of a friend is never the same as the loss of a father, it's still painful and it's safe to see, you were a good man and a great Dad.

Thank you for your service, God Bless and may you continue to forever Rest in Peace, Brother.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer. Today, March 6, 2003 we dedicated the shift to the memory of P.O. Grill & Herron who died on this date years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Grill's & Herron's sacrifice will never be forgotten.
