I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Deputy Tephford. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Brian, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Brian's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Brian's life was about so much more than the way he died. Brian will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Deputy Tephford, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou
Aloha Deputy Sheriff Brian Tephford,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.
I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum of the "ODMP Light". That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer.
Every fallen officer is an hero. The ODMP serves as a place where that continuum of "LIGHT" can be seen through and within, the heart and soul of each and every person who honors our fallen heroes with a relection and/or tribute. As we say in Hawaii, we are `Ohana. We are family. May God comfort the family and loved ones who have lost Deputy Sheriff Brian Tephford. May God also comfort those who have lost a fellow officer and friend that can never be replaced in this lifetime.
I wish you peace and love beyond all understanding.
May you rest in peace Deputy Sheriff Brian Tephford.
Me Ke Aloha Pumehana. Amen.
**I pray all find comfort in this Hawaiian prayer I leave you.**
THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"
Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,
The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,
The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.
My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,
Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".
A'ole ka Maluhia o ke ao aka, ka'u Maluhia wale no,
Ka Maluhia o ka "I".

Deputy Brian Tephford,
I knew you very little, but the fact is, I had the honor to know you.
I remember my first Ride-A-Long, you were the first Deputy I made contact with, You helped me out when I was talking to the Charlie Shift Sgt. when he wasnt too sure if I was supposed to be there. You were part of the reason I chose to ride in District 7 for every following Friday and Saturday. I could have chose from 19 other districts, but you and the rest of the shift were so welcoming. You were there for my first 10-40, and you even bought my meal. The few times we were your back up for the 10-50's, you tried to teach me what you were doing, and WHY.
Ill never forget the night of the shooting, Ill never forget the radio call, ill never forget how everyone was so worried about you, and their only priority was to save you. We stayed into Bravo Shift, and when I did go home, I didnt even care to sleep.
Ill never forget you, or that smile you always had on your face.
The day of your services, I decided to stay home from school to attend, I couldnt stop the tears, because every picture I saw, you had that same happy smile on your face.
You are, and always will be missed, I continued to ride in 7 every following saturday, because I know it is safe with you watching over the shift.
R.I.P Deputy Brian Tephford

"My Brother"
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.
He was a cop.
Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.
He was a cop.
Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.
Rest In Peace Brother, We've got the watch now....

Brian, although I never had the HONOR/pleasure of meeting you I will always remember the way Ryan talked about you. You two were so goofy together. I will also always remember the picture of the 2 of you in your magtaf gear in Ft. Lauderdale May of 2005. That stayed on our refridgerator until I had to move after losing Ryan. You will be greatly missed and NEVER forgotten. I offer my sincere condolences to all of BSO and most importantly your family. Ryan and you can now be crazy together in Heaven!! Please give him a hug for me and tell him how much I love him. God Bless you both!

Judgment Day for a Police Officer
.....Author Unknown
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my work was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep,
I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the Throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Thank you for walking the thin blue line. It seems, at times, that it becomes harded and harder each day. I hope your partner finds the proper healing he needs to survive this emotionally and mentally. And may your children be taught of the greatness of their father so that they think of you and smile. Requiem in pacem!
