As a dispatcher with law enforcement for the past 8 years, I humbly extend my deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and professional spectrum of Deputy Sheriff Brian Tephford.
The poetic piece presented below is specifically for Mrs. Tephford (and children), and I pray that you may each find a sense of peace in the days to come as you reflect and remember.
"Reflections of Her Soul"
In a trance like state she stares through the window of her soul,
The tears pool at her feet like a puddle from a cool summer's rain,
Where you are remains a mystery even though there have been many stories told,
Every brisk movement, every fleeting shadow, every faint voice makes her anticipate your presence...anxiously and eagerly awaiting your arrival in vain,
For she can still feel the warmth of your breath like a peppermint wind,
She can still feel your strong and tedious touch like an architecture's creative hand,
She can still hear your raspy voice like a baritone tenor deep in song,
In a trance-like state she reflects, she remembers, she longs for, and she forever loves.

A Real Hero Indeed
A hero is real; it’s inside all of us.
Some show it everyday,
Some hide it away.
You are a hero, it was your job.
To take criminals off the street,
To keep a community safe.
And sometimes it takes a person,
To lay down his own life for another,
And that is what you did.
And what do we give in thanks.
A coffin draped with the America flag,
A 21-gun salute.
Bagpipes being played, and
Even taps.
What do we have to remember you?
A folded flag, a badge, a uniform.
And slowly we will forget the story.
But one thing that wont be forgotten,
Is who you were,
Who you are
And what you did.
That signifies you a hero Indeed!

Brian,
We met before you were a sheriff. We met you before you had children. We met you through your wife Stefanie. We got together many times and enjoyed all of them. My children, especially my oldest, had a love for mustangs and you helped quench that thirst. You and my boys played tennis often. On your 30th birthday we had a Barbie Doll cake and Barbie balloons for you. We remember you demonstrating take down holds with my oldest son in my living room. We remember the excitement you had at becoming a officer of the law. Time and circumstance led our lives in different directions, but the impact you made is everlasting. We will be forever thankful that we had the good fortune of sharing part of our lives with you. You were truly one of the most genuine persons that we have ever had the privelege of knowing. Our love and support go out to your children and Stefanie, we will always be there for them in any way we can.
God rest your soul and we shall meet again someday.

I was working the night of this tragic loss. Our agency, along with many others sent K-9's and Officers to assist in locating the cowards who took you from your family and friends. It was a very busy night, but they did not locate these criminals that evening. However, the search never stopped and finally they were caught. Now we hope they face the ultimate punishment...We pray for your family and friends and we will watch as they bring these killers to justice.
Keep a watch at in heaven, as we keep or attempt to keep the streets of Broward County safe. God Bless.

A Part of America Died
Sombody killed a policeman today, an a part of America died. A piece of our country he swore to protect will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court, with counsel demanding his rights, while a yound widowed mother must work for her kids and spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too, just as if he'd gone off to war. Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast.
To his name, they will add a gold star. Yes, somebody killed a policeman today. It happened in your town or mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors.
A cop put his life on the line. Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call and gave us his all, and a part of America died.
