We are all very saddened to hear of the tragic death of our fellow officer. I had the privilege of attending basic with Dave, and will never forget him. I watched our class video last night, and the one consistent thing about Dave is that he was always grinning and chewing his gum. This man would do anything for someone in need. He was dedicated to his chosen profession and to his family and friends. He will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. May you rest in peace buddy. Deputy Briese, needless to say, the only person responsible for your death is the drunk driver who became combative with the officer who pulled him over. May he know and live to regret his actions and what tragedy they brought.

My heart and prayers go out to the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office and all who work there, but more especially to your sons. They will have many memories of you, but what kind of father you are will not simply be a memory. They will feel you with them always, as I know you will be there.

God Bless and may you Rest in Peace, Brother.

To the Sons, friends, and all those that wear the badge of law enforcement. We have lost another Officer because I guess God had other plans for him. We hope the sons will remember all the wonderful memories and not his passing.
When God Made Peace Officers
Unknown Author
When the Lord was creating peace officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one"

And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?" A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."

He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day."

He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."

"It's not the hands that are causing me problems." said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through the bulge in a pocket before he asks, 'May I see what's in there sir?' (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of the head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say. 'You'll be all right ma'am.' When he knows it isn't so."

"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't" said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident, and feed a family of five on a civil service pay check."

The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think?" she asked.

"You bet." said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crime scenes; recite Miranda warnings in his sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."

"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell; coax a confession from a child abuser; comfort a murder victim's family; and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her fingers across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak." She pronounced. "I told you that you are trying to put to much in this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions; for fallen comrades; for commitment to that funny piece of metal called his badge; for justice."
"You're a genius." said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there." he said.
Another hero has lost his life but he will never forget him and all who are close to him we will keep in our prayers.

I worked with Dave and he was one of the BEST people I have ever met. He was professional in his work and always ready with a smile. At every briefing he let loose with at least one of his trademark laughs. He was a loving father and a true friend. He died with members of his team, doing the job he loved.

Deputy Briese you will be forgotten. The rest of us will pick up the loss and continue to protect the inocent. We will not do so with a dry eye. I ask that all of my brothers and sisters in brown/blue/and green to slow down. This is two wonderful officers taken from our sides in less than three weeks. We do no good to anyone if we don't get there in one piece. Stay safe.
