Mary, our sister, and our dear friend; may you rest in peace. Your presence will be deeply missed. The sound of your laughter will be no more. Your voice on the phone will no longer comfort us, but your smile will shine down on us as you rest in the comfort of God's arms. You were a great officer of the law and we have always respected your drive to make the world a safer place for all people. We love you and we will miss you deeply.

On Monday the actions of what can only be referred too as domestic terrorism struck deep into the heart of Fairfield PD. As a result, the life of Officer Mary Smith was taken by a cold blooded cop killer.
Mary's dedication to serving the law enforcement profession and her willingness to protect Alabama's citizens has set an example for all officers to follow.
This department asks that you continue your prayers as God leads us through the legal process called justice. Although its sometimes an imperfect system, we pray that judgement will be swift, appropriate and that this system will not fail us.
Mary was an Angel, sent by God to protect HIS people. She did her job so well here, that she was allowed to put on her well earned wings of glory. She has gone to heaven to join the other fallen brothers and sisters of this profession. Her new duties in paradise, which I know she will do well, will be protecting God's Throne and watching over us from above.
As the remaining members of FPD go about our daily duties, the legacy Mary left will grow. As we go foward, every citizen helped by a Fairfield Officer can thank Mary for being Fairfield's guardian angel.
See ya one day in heaven my sister and this time you can talk on my police radio as much as you want.
Your Chief,,, but more importantly your friend!!!

God has called Home another Sister in Blue. Your work on Earth is done, may you Rest in Peace. Your dedicated service will never be forgotten by those you sought to protect, or by your brothers and sisters in Blue. Thank You for your ultimate sacrifice to your fellow men and women.
As Public Safety Officers, we all pray not to hear of such a tragic loss, but when the time comes, we know with out a doubt, you did your best; you gave your all; and you never looked back.
You are truly a Hero.

I know from experience that no words can make this better for the family and friends of Officer Smith, but please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers and she is in a better place. It takes a very special person to know the risk and still do the job. Every officer who makes that decision daily is a glowing example of bravery. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

OVER MY NEAR 20 YEAR CAREAR WITH THE BIRMINGHAM POLICE DEPT. I HAVE LOST FRIENDS. I CAN NOT EXPLAIN WHY THIS HURTS SO MUCH MORE. MAYBE ITS BECAUSE IT HAPPENED TO MARY. SHE WAS TOO NICE AND KIND TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN TO HER. EVEN THOUGH I KNOW IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANY OF US. WHEN YOU NEEDED A KIND WORD, A LAUGH, OR HUG. MARY WAS THERE. NOW SHE IS NOT. IT IS RARE, AS MOST OF US KNOW, THAT WE KEEP POSITIVE AFTER ALL THE THINGS WE GO THROUGH. MARY DID IT. AND SHE SPREADED THAT POSITIVITY AMONG US. SO UNTIL WE GET THERE WITH MARY, WE MUST STAY POSITIVE AND HOLD OUR OWN AS SHE DID FOR ALL OF THOSE PLEASANT YEARS WE HAD HER. I WISH EVERY OFFICER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW MARY. YOU COULD ONLY BE BETTER FOR IT.
