To the family and friends of Officer Mary Smith and to her fellow officers of the Fairfield Police Department and the Birmingham Police Dept:
I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of this dedicated officer. On behalf of our entire family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you sustained when Officer Smith was brutally murdered in the line of duty.
May you be comforted and supported by the warm embrace of your law enforcement family, and by other police survivors who share your painful journey.
My heart goes out to her family. In reading the reflections about Mary, it is obvious that she profoundly touched the lives of many people and that she was an amazing person, mother, family member, friend and peer. That is a wonderful legacy to leave to all those who cared for her.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the many years of distinquished service Officer Smith gave to her community and the citizens of Alabama, and for the supreme sacrifice she and her family made on October 23, 2006.

Mary and I worked the same beat (Car #427) on different shifts when I was in Patrol. She was my relief. She was always interested in what had happened the night before because she cared about the people in the West End Neighborhood. She was a great cop and will be sorely missed. I pray that knowing this will bring her family some comfort. When I was appointed chaplain for the department Mary encouraged me by saying that she knew I would do a good job. Thank you Mary for all that you taught me and those encouraging words. We will continue! We know that you would want us to do just that.
