How devastating it is to loose yet another hero to such a violent act. Once again, another death has hit me close to home. I have been to Manchester a few times, to visit my sister who lives in the area. Exactly 1 year ago, her fiance tried to talk me into moving to N.H. to join the Manchester P.D. At the time I had been an officer of the Chesapeake P.D. in VA for 10 1/2 years. 9 days prior to the conversation, one of the officers I trained at the police academy was killed. (Officer M.K. Saffran E.O.W. 10/08/05). As I was reeling from his death, Brian told me how safe a place Manchester was to be a cop, because cops didn't get killed there. I am so truly sorry that Brian has been proven wrong. It brings tears to my eyes that since my baby sister lives 800 miles away from me, there is one less hero out there to keep her safe tonight. Even sadder yet, is that the Briggs family is without their own personal hero tonight too. My deepest condolences to his family and thank you for sharing your hero with and making him our hero too. My thoughts and prayers are with you. To the officers of the Manchester Police Department, I am so sorry to all of you too. I know the pain you are going through. I know the sleepless nights that are yet to come, as you come to terms with the loss of your brother and partner. I still hurt as bad today as I did a year ago, and I hate to see anyone else feel this way. I hope you can find some kind of comfort in knowing that he is watching over all of you now. Stay Strong!!

This is a very difficult time and our thoughts are with you all: the officers at the Manchester Police Dept. and Officer Briggs' family and loved ones. It's been three and 1/2 years since the loss of our friend, Sgt. Michael Johnson with the Vermont State Police and we still think of him every single day. Please support each other while you begin to fathom what has happened. There are no words that can lessen this but please know that there are many people that are supporting you and thinking about you. We are so sorry for your loss.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

To the Briggs family, and the officers and families of the Manchester, NH Police Dept., I would like to offer my deepest condolences. I remember well how your department members responded to Providence and personally represented your thoughts and concerns when we lost a good man ourselves, Det. Sgt. James Allen, on April 17, 2005. No words can fill the void left when a good police officer goes down in the line. I met several officers from your department at Jimmy Allen's funeral, and I wonder if Michael Briggs wasn't one of them. Regardless, he did what we all do every day, and it was his unfortunate destiny to give his life in service to others. That alone makes him a hero, and a man whose memory should be given the highest of honors. I'll be there to help you do that. Meanwhile, try to remain strong for each other and the Briggs family, as they will neeed all of you in the coming days, weeks, and months. God Bless.

Dear Mike:
Once again, and all too often, I find myself writing a reflection to a fallen brother. When Lord, when will the carnage to police officers cease? Another wife without her husband and friend, another child without Dad to play with. Another Mother who's suffering and sacrifice gave us a fine human being, only to have that life cut short.
Mike, you took a job and an oath, to protect those who cannot protect themselves. You answered the cry of the wolf at the door, and paid the ultimate price. But know this brother: that your death shall not have been in vain, that you passing only keeps the fires inside the rest of us, burning ever so more intensly.
Your name, your legacy, shall not perish from the earth. Not only in Washington, but here as well as everywhere else there are law abiding, decent people, your name and your sacrifice has made you FOREVER one of America's heroes. :In valor, there is hope."
May Almighty God watch over your family, help them through their suffering, and keep you close to his heart, along with all our fellow brothers who have answered the call. Thank you Mike for your sacrifice, your dedication, and God Bless you and police officers everywhere. Amen

It honors me to be the first to let your family know that though what we do is dangerous, we would not do any other job. Be proud of this officer and never forget the sacrifices that are made every day and expected of us...In the line of duty they say...The duty is our job. God Bless You and Your Family.
