Reflections for Officer Michael Leland Briggs
Hello,Norm,a Former US Marine,Disabled American
Veteran, who meet Officer Briggs at Valley Street jail,Oct. 1996,just 10 years prior to his passing.
I had a very incanney incident happen between,"
Brother Mike & I ,that I will post on Reflection's here...but am looking to send a more personal Christmas card to his Wife & Son's,
VIA of US Postal, expressing this personal act of human nature, which so humbled me,after having spent almost eight months in confinement @ the Valley St.Jail, back in 1996 for having been,"
deemed a habitual offender!"Without getting into my past offense's,that which I myself feel have been leavied against me,without merit & improper council,& misrepresentation,& lack of solid evidence,I realize that infraction's of The Law Happen every day, which go un-noticed to good people who are other-wise caught up in,bad situation's!",but again, this is not my main focus,or why I am writing your Dept.,this day.
From my heart & soul,"We Marines' or Subjects' named, thereof, have a code of conduct, which we believe to be ture to God,Country & The Corps!", in fact we coin the phrase,"That Their are Brother's,& then there are other's!",Mike was a Brother in every aspect of the word!
Maybe at this point I should just continue with my story,& let his own brother decide if they would like to post it or not,it's a simple yet humbling experience for me,one that brought me to tears after it actually occured...(I don't really want to let the media know about it,since they have a way of exploiting thing's as such, but for the few, closest to Mike, his compassion & compassion may or may have not been what caused his being shot?)This I will try to express in closing...."On or about the evening of Oct. 10th,1996,then Correctional Officer,Micheal Briggs,"Briggie",had recently been a new duty to our POD/had been making a head count when he noticed my prison uniform's pant leg had been torn pretty much up the leg,he commented to me,"what do you like destroying prison property?",my comment back was, thats the way I recieved these pants, and his reply was,"ya sure, just like everyone in this place isn't guilty of their crime's!",my reply back was,I'm not,I don't know about the rest of these maggot's!"He exclaimed;,what where you a Marine,my reply was,ya 30 years ago!" I knew then he himself was Marine,so no more words need be said,in fact he explained to me he had recently got out,"Desert Storm Veteran".,and was studying to become a full time Police Officer.
Well,at that point,I had wished him all the best luck in his career,& life, explaining I had only 10 more day's & I would be released...he surprized me later that evening,by bringing me a couple changes of brand new issued prison uniform's,underware & sox's,asking me to change real quick into em,I thanked him, don't mention it he said! But to me,after having spent almost eight months in lock-up,I was going out in style!
Thanks to a brother Marine,& to me,a true Humanitarian!
Little though it seem's,my soul was touched by a Brother Marine!yes,A Good Guy!So my thoughts are confused to him the eve of his encounter with the guy who shot him,did he double back on his bike while heading to the Station, after noticing this creep he saved just months earlier,
to have a few words with him,to see how if he was
staying on the straight & narrow, how his injuries
where healing,or was did he anticipate any harm might come to him,I think not,but the un-expected happened, his life was taken from among us,why?Maybe because he cared to deeply for those
less fortunate, only one can speculate....but I know in fact he is gaurding The Streets of Heaven
A Former Marine,who met a Former Marine,who knew without saying,that we were Brother's amongst,other's!
May His Soul Rest In The Peace of Our Lord,Jesus Christ this Christmas Season,&
May The Love of God's Holy Spirit Fill his Family & Love-one's hearts to overflowing.....

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Briggs, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Michael, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Michael's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Michael's life was about so much more than the way he died. Michael will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Officer Briggs, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost four years but we still miss him terribly.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

I was very sorry and upset to learn of Micheal Briggs passing. I worked with Michael at the Valley St. jail from 1997 to 1998. I was a new correctional officer on 2nd shift working RHU and he was in charge of the unit. I can't say enough about what kind of officer he was. I learned more in the couple of months working in RHU with him than the rest of my 5 year jail/prison time. Briggs was one of the most squared away officer, Marine and person I have ever had the good fortune to meet. My deepest sympathies go out to Michael's family and his brothers and sisters at the Manchester PD.

A TIME OF DEEP SORROW IS UPON US WHEN WE FEEL THE LOSS OF A FELLOW BROTHER. AS WE PUT ON OUR MOURNING BANDS AND ATTENDED THE SERVICES FOR MICHAEL BRIGGS, IT BECAME JUST SO MUCH MORE REALISTIC AND DEFINITIVE.... WE HAVE LOST A DEAR MEMBER OF OUR CLOSE FAMILY.
IT IS SAID, HOWEVER, THAT WITHIN EVERY GRAY CLOUD IS A SLIVER LINING - WITHIN MICHAEL'S CLOUD IS A THIN BLUE LINE.
THE MEMBERS OF THE TILTON POLICE DEPARTMENT WISH TO EXPRESS OUR HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF OFFICER BRIGGS - OUR THOUGHTS ARE ALWAYS WITH YOU.
