Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Officer Kevin Louis Weeks

--"If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded." -- Maya Angelou

--"God's finger touched him, and he slept."--Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Aloha Officer Kevin Louis Weeks ,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here. That "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is an hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find comfort as we give comfort to the families who have lost a loved one.

As we say in Hawaii, “We are`Ohana.” We are family. God Bless this fallen hero. May we embrace him as one of our own family member; our `Ohana. No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace.

Officer Kevin Louis Weeks, I wish you, your loved ones, your fellow officers, and friends, peace and love beyond all understanding.

--- May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. ---

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".
Ka Maluhia o ka "I", owau no ka Maluhia,

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.
Ka Maluhia no na wa a pau, no ke'ia wa a mau a mau loa aku.

My Peace " I " give to you, My Peace " I " leave with you,
Ha'awi aku wau I ku'u Maluhia ia oe, waiho aku wau I ku'u Maluhia me oe,

Not the world's Peace, but, only My Peace,
The Peace of " I ".

A'ole ka Maluhia o ke ao aka, ka'u Maluhia wale no,
Ka Maluhia o ka "I".

Merry Christmas to you and your family. I know it is hard for them during this time of year. I pray they are all remembering the happy times with you and creating new memories for themselves. Shine down on them brightly so they know you are with them.

Kevin,

Today I was one of the riders who participated in the WSM Police Toy Run from Gilbert to Tempe. This years run was dedicated to officer Targosz and you. You both have the warrior spirit that motivates others to help.

Your proud parents attended the event. Your courageous mother spoke to the crowd and thanked us for honoring you, when in truth it was you and your family who honored us with your spirits.

A little rain fell on us this morning at the start of the ride and I couldn’t help but think it was Officer Targosz and you crying with joy that so many gathered in your names to help our community children this holiday season.

Your Brothers and Sisters in Blue will never forget your sacrifice to the community.

Respectfully,

It sounds like thunder far away, but the skies are blue and bright...And soon they crest the hill nearby, and ride into our sight. They shake the ground with powerful sound, and they make some hearts pound fast...They look so proud and noble, like knights come from the past.

Side by side, they always ride, and seem to move as one...From early in the morning light, to the setting of the sun. And children point and wave to them, from cars that pass them by...And young ones ask their parents, why the men have mirrors for eyes.

They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you...They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few. Like men of steel, on silver wings, they sparkle in the light...Then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.

Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again...You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind. Side by side, they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound...And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.

So if you see one riding, and you look into his face...You see your reflection in his eyes, and you know that you are safe. For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind...And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen one rides again.

From one "motorman" to another...God Speed & God Bless!!

I am always saddened by the loss of a brother officer, especially a fellow "wheelman". Brother, your young life was cut short suddently, but you are eternally at peace now, far from the strife and sorrows of this world. To his family, my prayers are with you...and please know that Kevin gave his life doing what he loved, protecting and serving those of his community.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Weeks, especially to his girlfriend. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Kevin, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Kevin's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Kevin's life was about so much more than the way he died. Kevin will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Weeks, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three and a half years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

It’s hard to know even where to start, friend. I always thought that I’d have the privilege of working with you again. I still am I having difficulty accepting that I will never be able to dispatch T508. I’ll miss not being able to work DUI taskforce with you. I’ll miss not being able to annoy the communications shift supervisor by using DPS codes on Tempe radio frequencies with you. The list goes on. Most of all, I’ll miss not having you as a friend. You have irrevocably changed all of our lives, and you will never ever be forgotten. I know that I know that I will see you again someday. In my grief, I will still bless the Lord, for He has given, and He was taken away (Job 1:21).

To Kevin’s family, I know that he was an honorable man of integrity and sagacity. I too have lost loved ones in my life, and it never becomes easier. However, I have learned that God always has a plan and a purpose behind even the most horrible of events. During times like this, I hold on to the words of a song by Mercy Me.

"You're in a better place, I've heard a thousand times
And at least a thousand times I've rejoiced for you
But the reason why I'm broken, the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you

I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
I've never been more homesick than now

Help me Lord cause I don't understand your ways
The reason why I wonder if I'll ever know
But, even if you showed me, the hurt would be the same
Cause I'm still here so far away from home

I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
I've never been more homesick than now

In Christ, there are no goodbyes
And in Christ, there is no end
So I'll hold onto Jesus with all that I have
To see you again
To see you again

And I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
Won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
Won't you give me strength to make it through somehow

I've never been more homesick than now"

Kevin, I landed at the airport in PHX for the first time on the morning of your departure from this earth. I learned about you from a cab driver en route to my hotel. He said there'd been an accident, traffic was slowed down nearby, and a M/C officer had been killed.

My heart sank and I prayed softly for you, your life, your family. I prayed the Buddhist prayer for the deceased and for your eternal happiness and I thanked you for your service to humanity. I cannot explain that somehow I felt connected to you deep in the parts of my life where I am an educator, a 4 year Army veteran, a weekend motorcyclist and a public servant. I've ust returned to my desk from a short vacation and you came to mind again, so I looked you up, to see your face and send my condolences to your family and friends and thank you for your sacrifice.

"God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference"......

Paula, Alan and Caryn-
Kevin was both a courageous and wise man, a true hero that walked among us. I pray that comfort finds you and somehow eases your pain. Please know that I am always just a phone call away and that you are all in my thoughts and prayers...

Kevin-
It has been two weeks since your accident and I still can't believe it. I thought I would be ready to come to this page and write something, but as I sit here and the tears stream down my face, I suppose I will never be truly ready. There are so many lives that you saved, so many lives that you touched. You will never be forgotten and I know that your strong ambition to get intoxicated drivers off the road will forever live on amongst your brothers and sisters in law enforcement. We will not let your torch burn out. I thank God for your friendship and will miss you very much. You will always have a special place in my heart…

until we meet again, rest in peace...

THE MOTORCYCLE OFFICER

IT SOUNDS LIKE THUNDER FAR AWAY, BUT THE SKIES ARE BLUE AND BRIGHT...
AND SOON THEY CREST THE HILL NEARBY, AND RIDE INTO OUR SIGHT.

THEY SHAKE THE GROUND WITH POWERFUL SOUND, AND THEY MAKE SOME HEARTS BEAT FAST...
THEY LOOK SO PROUD AND NOBLE, LIKE KNIGHTS COME FROM THE PAST.

SIDE BY SIDE, THEY ALWAYS RIDE, AND SEEM TO MOVE AS ONE...
FROM EARLY IN THE MORNING LIGHT, TO THE SETTING OF THE SUN.

AND CHILDREN POINT AND WAVE TO THEM, FROM CARS THAT PASS THEM AND YOUNG ONES ASK THEIR PARENTS, WHY THE OFFICERS HAVE MIRRORS FOR EYES.

THEY RIDE THE ROADS, AND FIGHT FOR GOOD, AND DEFEND SMALL ONES LIKE YOU...
THEY ASK TO RIDE, AND DO WITH PRIDE, AND SOMETIMES THEY ARE FEW.

LIKE OFFICERS OF STEEL, ON SILVER WINGS, THEY SPARKLE IN THE LIGHT...
THEN WITH A ROAR AND A RUMBLE, THEY RIDE OUT OF OUR SIGHT.

SOMETIMES WHEN ONE HAS FALLEN, NEVER TO RIDE AGAIN...
YOU CAN HEAR THE OTHERS CALLING, LIKE THUNDER ON THE WIND.

SIDE BY SIDE, THEY SLOWLY RIDE, AND THEIR THUNDER IS A MOURNFUL SOUND...
AND THE MIRRORS HIDE THEIR EYES FROM US, WHEN TEARDROPS FALL TO THE GROUND.

SO IF YOU SEE ONE RIDING, AND YOU LOOK INTO THEIR FACE...
YOU SEE YOUR REFLECTION IN HIS EYES; YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE SAFE.

FOR MOTOR OFFICERS ARE A SPECIAL BREED, THEY LOVE TO RIDE THE WIND...
AND WHEN YOU HEAR THE THUNDER BOOM, THE FALLEN ONES RIDE AGAIN.

I ATTENDED YOUR FUNERAL LAST WEEK. ONCE AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR GREAT SERVICE. YOUR ARE LOVED VERY MUCH AND I PRAY FOR YOUR FAMILY AND YOU AS WELL. I PUT THIS ON YOUR PAGE BECAUSE IT FITS SO WELL. Kevin was an exceptional motor officer. The memories he left with all of us will always bring a smile through the rest of our designated time. The energy he devoted to his DUI mission will continue to motivate his fellow officers, and remind those of us on the other end of the radio to have patience and remain diligent - knowing they are carrying on this difficult task.

Thank you to the Weeks family for allowing us the opportunity to share in the life of your son.

I am a Pennsylvania State Trooper, a soldier of the law.

To me is entrusted the honor of the force.

I must serve honestly, faithfully, and if need be, lay down my life as others have done before me, rather than swerve from the path of duty.

It is my duty to obey the law and to enforce it without any consideration of class, color, creed or condition.

It is also my duty to be of service to anyone who may be in danger or distress, and at all times so conduct myself that the honor of the force may be upheld.

Rest in peace Officer WEEKS, we'll take the watch from here.

ASCENSION

And if I go,
While you’re still here---
Know that I live on,
Vibrating to a different measure
--behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
So you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
--both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
…I will be there.

Kevin,

I wish somehow that we would have had the opportunity to work together. We are so much alike, you and I. I too am the only son of my parents. My only sibling, an older sister. We graduated from high school the same year. I'm sure we shared classes together at ASU. As I reflected upon your life yesterday during the funeral service and as we, your fellow motors escorted you to your final resting place, I take comfort in knowing that you are home and safe with our lord. The bible says in the book of Matthew 5:9, "blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of god".

Last night it rained here, and as I lay awake I could hear the most incredible, roaring thunder from the heavens. I knew then that you have earned your wings.....Ride well T-508.

Your funeral service, processional and graveside service were befitting the hero you were and always will be to this entire department and community. The processional stretched for miles....it was an awesome tribute, in particular the hundreds of motor officers from around the state leading your way to rest.

I want to echo to the Weeks' family what was said at the services yesterday....Thank you for raising a boy into an honorable man that made the world a better place.

Kevin, your brothers-in-arms will carry on your work knowing you are watching over us.

Kevin is a hero not because he died, but because of the way he lived.

My thoughts and prayers to Kevin’s family, friends, and those that new him well. Once again in a few short months we have been crushed.

A different breed of officer climbs aboard a motor at night to stand ready to visit violence upon those what would do us harm. Kevin loved what he did knowing he would not be rich, he would not be popular but believing, as we all do, that we can make a difference. Making a difference by leaving this world a better place having stood and challenged those that do not care for others is what Kevin did, he loved. His brothers, and society, shall miss him greatly.......
