Reflections for Sergeant Dale Rodney Holcomb
Hey Connie and kids,
I just wanted you to know that I think of you often and wonder how you guys are. We have moved to the beach and enjoy the slow pace and quietness of a small town. I can't believe that it's been two years . I'm sure you still pinch yourself and shake your head in disbelief . I often think to myself ,will that feeling ever go away? I hope to talk to you soon. S

Hi Sarge, I was just setting here looking back through all of the reflectiions that people have left. Some I cried over and a few I smiled at. I read Capt's several times and it broke my heart a little each time.
I hope you know how much people down here still miss you and Josh. I dont know about other's, but it still seems a little strange. Kind of like it didnt really happen.
I just wanted to say hi and that I think of you so very often. Rest easy.

I'm sure the same for you as well. Give me a call. I would love to catch up with you. Hope all is well. Talk to you soon. S

Dale, You'll be seeing your mom sometime soon. She's not well and is coming to join you. She says she's ready because she misses you so much as we all do. We're all praying she doesn't suffer and praying for your Dad and family, too. I know you'll be waiting for her at the gate. Have a wonderful reunion.

Good News came today Dale , Not that it will help anything or bring you and Josh back, but maybe your families can have peace of mind. Always thinking of you and Josh .

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Dale, you are not forgotten. We miss you working with us though we all know you are not far away. You were the best and such a wonderful influence on me. I am a better person for knowing you. Thank you. Thinking back on the time I spent working with you, I was such a kid, but you still treated me with such respect. Now, I'm so proud of the fact that you just knew my name. I was such a nobody, but you never treated me that way. We miss you. God bless you, sir. He's already blessed us by giving you to us.

Hey Dale,
I can't believe it has been one year already. It still seems like yesterday. My memories of when I heard the news is still so vivid. More vivid than I would like maybe... I miss ya, Dale. I'm so proud to be able to say that I served along side you. You were the best, sir. You really were. I'll never forget what I learned from you. I am really thankful I had the opportunity to meet you and work with you in Gallia County. The success I have experienced should be dedicated to you and a few very special others. You will always be ranked as one of my most favorite people I have met in my life. I think you would be very proud of me if you could see me now, sir. I will carry what you have taught me until the day I die. You'll never be forgotten and that's a promise. September 28, 2007...it came a lot sooner than any of us were ready for. We miss you, Dale. We're so proud of you and Josh. We miss you both. Home will never be the same without you there.
