We worked together when I was with the town marshal's office. The thing I remember most about Bill was his love of police work. He was a great guy and a good officer and I'm glad to hear he had so much success but grieved that it ended so soon. I met his wife a few times, though I doubt she will remember me. My condolences go out to her and his whole family.

To Sheriff William Carver and his loved ones:
On this the eighth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Sheriff Carver. I am so humbled by your valor and courage. I also salute your service to your country as a Marine. My son Larry was your brother in green as well as blue.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Bill gave to his community and the citizens of Indiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 29, 2001.

I was blessed to have known Sheriff Carver. We just called him "Bill" or "Bubba". He was truly a down to earth man who never met a stranger. I worked many times side by side with Bill as a police officer, and he was always the same never putting anyone down. He is greatly missed still today almost 8 years since his death. I am greatful to have the memories of Bill when I was an officer. He was a good officer and I still think of all the great times we had working together.

I worked for Bill while he was in office as Sheriff. He always had a saying "now bubba". I will never forget how much fun he was. Bill was a great guy to all who knew him! He is missed very much!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To all the friends and family of Sheriff Carver - you are not alone during this time of mourning. I know on this day you look back and wonder, what might have been... Know that the entire law enforcement community honors him and other fallen officers by going out every night and taking up the watch.

I worked very hard to get Bill added to the ODMP, and was very happy to see it finally added, I worked with Bill while he was a LT. with the HCSO and it was a pleasure to have known him, and work with him for the short time I did.

While it is no consolation for your loss, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Sheriff Carver.
While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven through his selfless service to those he swore to protect.
Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.
