This is a painful loss and serves to remind us that we, as a community, must collectively respond to this outrage and support the efforts of Trooper Longobardo and his colleagues. We owe him and all law enforcement this debt, especially given the lack of public support in the hunt for the person responsible for this crime. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Joe, Although this is one of the saddest times in alot of our lives, I want you to know how proud of you we are at the Trooper, friend and most importantly, the father you were. We are proud of you for how long you fought, most men would have died in the woods that evening. Know that your beautiful family loves you very much, and they will be well cared for. Know that your friends and fellow Troopers will never let the memory of you go. You will always hold a special spot in alot of people's hearts, so keep an eye on us from up there and enjoy the view as you watch Louie grow. We will be sure to tell him as he gets older what a man you were.

Trooper Longobardo,
You served your community with honor and integrity. The citizens of New York State have suffered a terrible loss. Your life was stolen from you by a coward. There will be no rest for your brothers and sisters in blue until this man who hides in shadows and is afraid to look an officer in the face, is caught. Our deepest condolences to your family and the brave men and women of the New York State Police. You will never be forgotten and you will always be remembered as a hero. Rest in peace, brother!

Joseph,
As I heard the news of your sensless death today I cried for you, your friends, fellow officers, and family. I did not know you personally. I did not even know your name until you were gone, but I want you to know that I will never forget you. You truly are a hero and have touched the lives of so many people. I pray for your family and friends. I know the grief that they are going through now all too well. I grieve for your wife and for the son who lost his father. May God calm your hearts and bring you peace. Thank you for your service Joseph...hero.

Situations like these hit hard and hit home. An Officer's duty is never over, even in death. The badge isn't just something you wear, it's something you hold in your heart. I know you'll watch over others fighting the good fight and those of us training to walk the line. May your wife find the strength to one day carry on and may your son grow to learn about his hero father. Requiem in pacem!

Rest in peace, brother Joseph. The rest of us in blue/gray/brown and all the varied uniform colors of this great land will carry it from here.

Most sadly of all is the news that some in that area harbored or faciliated this guy's ability to evade capture for months. Shame on them.
