Reflections for Deputy Chief Gary L. Martin

My deepest condolences to the family of Chief of Police (COP) Gary Martin and to the men and women of the Gary In Police Department, and Lake County Police Dept. Gary Martin was not only a dedicated public servant, but a very good man.

COP Martin was not only a law enfocement officer since 1970, but also taught at Indiana University (Gary Campus) for roughly 30 years and at the NW Indiana Law Enforcement Traning Center.

COP Martin touched the lives of hundreds of young men and women just entering their law enforcement careers. COP Martin was an excellent instructor who provided guidance and encouragement to his students. His absence will be greatly missed.

COP Martin was preceded in death by his cousin Lt. T.E. Sharp of the Marion County (IN) Sheriff's Office (EOW 12/25/88).

God Bless COP Martin, Lt. Dudley, Lt. Sharp and all other Law Enforcement Officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Gary, you will be missed by many people who will never forget all the great things you have done in this life to helping people, be it students of yours, fellow officers, spouses of fallen officers and people you met on the street. You have definitely made a strong impact in many lives and for this you are a hero. I know your family will miss you deeply as will you family in law enforcement and Indiana University. You are someone that should be looked up to for all you have done. You will never be forgotten by my wife and your good friend Jackie, or myself. While it is no consolation for your loss, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Chief Martin.

While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven through his selfless service to those he swore to protect.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.
