Chuck-
My superman, my inspiration! I miss you so much! My life will never be the same, but you showed me that I have the strength to get through anything. I'll achieve my goals in May of '07 and I know you will be watching me as I walk across that stage and get the degrees that I worked so hard to obtain. Thank you for all you done for me, our family, and the town of Beckley. You are a true hero! You will never be forgotten...forever in my heart! I love you!

On the 21st of August 8 years earlier, my friend and fellow officer Michael Ceriale was taken from us while conducting an undercover drug surveilance on Chicagos' south side. When he was spotted behind a bush/schrub,a shot rang out and from a short distance, he was hit below his vest and the world forever changed, Mike managed to fight for his life for a week when he was called home. Like Corporal Smith, Mike was young and full of energy and from what I have read ,he, like Mike had lots and lots of friends and acquaintances who thought the world of him . I visit this site a lot and it saddens me when I have to read of yet another brother in blue who has been taken from us.
I came across Corporal Smiths reflections and then visited your local news, newspapers on the internet and just came to tears as I continued to read on .The many reflections left for him from all over. In so many ways similar to Mikes tragedy, I was just brought to tears and I finally decided to write a reflection because I want his family and friends to know that we are one brotherhood and when someone is taken from us in the line of duty it is heartfelt all across this land of ours and the pain as great. I wish to extend my deepest condolences to "chuky's" family and especially his little girl. Your daddy was/is a hero and will never ever be forgotten. We in the law enforcement community make sure of that.
Rest in peace Corporal Charles Smith and may God bless your soul and keep your family strong through these very trying times. Say hello to our fellow brother, Officer Michael Ceriale when you meet him, you 2 will get along fine as well as the many other brothers & sisters walking the beat up there on heavens streets.

Chuck,
I don't know where to start...
The days that we used to fight in that mat room at Independence? The times we used to ride around laughing about those fights? The times that we were sitting in the corner of that mat? The days on the golf course? They were all memorable, but I think I will start by telling you that I will forever remember you and that I will carry on, it's what you would want.
I really can't believe that you are gone. We had talked about it, but I never thought it would really happen. I thought you were invincible. Nothing bad ever seemed to dampen your spirit and I'm trying to be that strong, but as I sit here I think about all the times that we had and how close we had become. It isn't fair that such a wonderful man, such a wonderful friend is gone. I will cherish forever the conversation that we had that Monday afternoon. I'll also never forget when I got that call a little more than 12 hours later. I will never forget the kind of friend you were, nor the way that you lived life. You are truly an example for others to live by. Never complacent, always full speed. We could ALL be better people if we would learn from you. I pray that this tragedy and your life isn't swept under the rug, forgotten with time and that the things that you did and what you stood for are always at the front of everyone's mind. I know it will be mine.
I will never be able to go to another wrestling match or play another round of golf without the thought of you being there. I'm sure that you'll be there laughing the next time I put one in the drink, telling me "I told you to hit the seven iron".
You have touched far more lives than you will ever know. I can honestly say that I was blessed to have known you. I will forever remember you as you were... Proud and serious. Humble and comical. A good man and a wonderful friend.
For your family, my deepest sympathy. I will one day look into your daughter's eyes and let her know what a great man her father was. You may be gone from this world, but you will live on in us all forever. Semper Fi and God Speed.

Wherever in the world we serve, we all face the same threats and challenges on a daily basis, we are all brothers. Chucky's death is as much of a loss as if one of my own team had been killed.
Chucky died making his little corner of the world a safer place and I thank him for it.

I didnt know Chucky well enough to call him a close friend but I knew him well enough to call him a close acquaintance. He was always laughing and happy when I talked to him. He loved his family and his job. You could tell it even without him saying a word. I hadnt seen him for almost two years and the first things he told me was about Taylor and his "new" undercover duties. I am thankful that I did get to know him and for his great services. My heart and prayers go out to all the family including the BPD. May God lay his comforting hand on your shoulder and guide you thru your days.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Detective Smith, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Chucky, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Chucky's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Chucky's life was about so much more than the way he died. Chucky will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Detective Smith, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three and a half years but we still miss him terribly.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)

I want the entire family of Chuck to know that they are in my thoughts and prayers each and every day. Chuck was a great cop and loved every moment that he was performing his duties and never once did he put himself first before others. Chuck was a very special friend whom will hold a special place forever in my heart. Its hard to put the uniform back on and perform my duty each and every day, but I know that Chuck would want me to continue on with the job that he loved so much. Being a police officer takes alot of courage, heart, and the drive to make a community a better, and safer place for everyone to live and Chuck had every quality and it showed each and every day that he went to work. I will forever hold the memories in my heart that I shared with him and every conversation that we had. Chuck, I miss you and love you man and will never forget you.

For you guys had problems just like any other Friendship
I know he wishes he was there to help protect from the evil that took you from us. But now its to late, but Gods just in time for hes taken you to a better place. A place well all meet again. A place you guys will never have to fight crime together. Its place to enjoy being together Again.
We all loved you dearly and will miss you so much..
We wished it wasn't you. But god choose to take you. He choose you.
But we all miss you dearly you will never be forgotten.

What do you really say in sad tragic situations such as this one. Except you wish it was the other BAD People that did this. Why do the GOOD MEN have to die for trying to get THE BAD GUYS off of the streets. It doesn't seem fair. I pray for the family as I know this is the hardest thing to go through. But there will be a day that the LORD JESUS CHRIST will come back and it will be the happiest day to be reunited with our loved ones. I respect officers the minute they put that uniform on you don't know if there coming home or not. And they Risk our lives every day to take violence off the streets and away from the younger kids. Many people loved you Chuck Very Many and that should reflect on the kind of person that you were... You will be sadly missed but NEVER FORGOTTEN... May GOD WATCH OVER TAYLOR AND BRITTANY & YOUR MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER FRIENDS AND EVERYONE THAT LOVED YOU. You have touched so many lives and for the people who didn't get to meet you they felt the pain when they heard the news. Your in our hearts and prayers may you REST IN PEACE. And we'll see you when JESUS takes us all home.

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.
