Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Corporal Charles Eugene Smith, II

Chuckie it's still hard to believe that your gone. I remember the long talks we had when we worked night shift. I can say that you were a friend and a brother of the badge.Whenever one of us needed you it didn't matter what time or place I knew you would be there. As police officer sometimes we find it hard to say that we love each other but I we all know that we do. I will never forget your smile and the way you could always make a joke about anything.I was driving down the road today and I remembered how you ran after that guy on that 4 wheeler that night. You remember the way you ran we will keep that with us but I still laugh about it. Well I guess I will go now I say see you later I won't say goodbye. Love Ya man your friend G-MONEY.

Chuck- It's just as hard today to think about you being gone as it was in August. Does this ever get easier? Our family will never be the same. I will never be the same. Perhaps Beckley will never be the same.
I love you.

I turned 30 this past week. I couldn't help think how it was the first big milestone I'll do without you. It's not fair. I hate that you'll never turn 30. I can't believe you were robbed of your future. I never imagined that such evil was all around us, but you knew didn't you? All your "Brothers in Blue" know. We just take our safety for granted sometimes. Without men like you, we couldn't even leave our houses.

Thank you Chuck for all you gave. Thank you for being one of the defenders of us all.

Aloha Detective Corporal Charles (Chucky) Smith,
Thank you for your service and dedication to your community and your country. You and all officers that continue to lay your lives on the line and pay the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities and country safe, will NEVER be forgotten.

I personally pledge, (after one of Hawaii's own, Honolulu Police Officer Steve Favela, lost his life in the line of duty protecting our Commander in Chief, President George W. Bush), to become a continuum of the ODMP light. That light is in the form of an ODMP tribute. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, race, religion, profession, education, and geographical location can share here. That "LIGHT" comes from within the heart and soul of every person who cares to share a word or two on behalf of each and every fallen officer. Every fallen officer is an hero. The ODMP; Officer Down Memorial Page gives us a place to come together and share our feelings as one family. May we find comfort as we give comfort to the families who have lost a loved one.

As we say in Hawaii, “We are`Ohana.” We are family. God Bless this fallen hero. May we embrace him as one of our own family member; our `Ohana. No one will ever be able to replace you for you were unique and very special. No one; not in this lifetime. May God allow you to rest in His Divine peace.

Detective Corporal Charles (Chucky) Smith, I wish you, your loved ones, your fellow officers, and friends, peace and love beyond all understanding.

--- May this Hawaiian prayer give all those who read it comfort. ---

THE PEACE OF " I "
KA MALUHIA O KA "I"

Peace be with you, All My Peace,
O ka Maluhia no me oe, Ku'u Maluhia a pau loa,

The Peace that is " I ", the Peace that is "I am".

The Peace for always, now and forever and evermore.

For thus says my Lord to me:
"Go, station a watchman, let him tell what he sees."
The watchman cried, "On the watchtower, O my Lord, I stand constantly by day;
and I stay at my post through all the watches of the night."
"Upon your walls ... I have stationed watchmen; never, by day or by night, shall they be silent."

Chuck,
Jackson was Superman for Halloween. You would've loved that, I know. It was cute. Emily wouldn't even wear her costume. You would've thought that was funny too.

Taylor was absolutely beautiful as Tinker Bell. She always makes me think of you every time I see her.
I miss you a lot.

Halloween has made me think of all the years we went trick-or-treating together. Those were such happy times. We had a great childhood together. I feel bad for those people that never know their cousins. I can't imagine growing up that way.

I love you and miss you, Tre

chuck,

I will never forget those days that you dreamed of being a police officer, and for a short time your dream came true.
I will always remember the days that we rode on "police bikes" together chasing after the "bad guys". I know your time on this earth was cut short but for some reason which i will not know until we get to ride those streets as partners again. i will never forget you chucky, you will always be riding beside your family and friends wherever they go. Until i see you again chuck, SEMPER FI.

I can not find the words to express the sadness I feel for your family. I know words can only do so much for such a situation. I want say thank you for everything and am proud that an Officer such as Det. Smith has made the greatest sacrifice to serve and protect in this wonderful State of West Virginia. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Smith family. Again from myself and my daughter, Thank You.

The final inspection”

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Thank you and your family for your sacrifice. I hope God helps them find peace and understanding in the future. You may have saved my or my famiy members life or your wife or daughter's life by helping rid the community of drug peddlers and the scourge of death and depravity they bring into our area. I see this as as good a legasy as a man can leave that his works can carry on through the unseen pain and disease he prevented. I will remeber you-though I never met you and do something kind in your name. Thank You.

Chuck (Our true hero),
I know you are looking down on us from heaven and wishing you could take our pain away. Just as you looked after us while you were here. I will never understand why you were chosen so early but I have to remind myself that God has a purpose for everything. I will always cherish the memories that we shared. I am so thankful that Roy and I had the opportunity to share in some GREAT times before you had to leave us. Those times will never be forgotten. Roy is really having a very hard time but I promise that I will do my best to help him through each and every day. I also promise to tell Jacob about you everyday. And spend as much time as we can with Tay Tay. You will never be forgotten.

We love and Miss you,

Chuck

Thinking back, I remember all the fun times that were shared as children and I regret that they grew to be so far and few in between. However, I do want you to know how very proud I am of you and your accomplishments. Heaven is much sweeter with you there and I hope to meet up with you one day.

Dear Chuck, I spent the day with your sister in law Stacie and nefew Jacob. We took him to the new Chick Filet. She had a beautiful necklace on with your badge number and name on it. The sun reflected off of it as it does your heart. I will help any police officer who wants help with druggies anytime if they ask and I don't care to post my name. I knoiw you are watching from heaven and I hope they don't have moscietos and biting bugs up there.

Chuck- I come here all the time. It still all feels so unreal to me. I hope that you felt the love that people are showing now while you were here. I hope that you felt the respect and the honor that Beckley really has for it's officers. I love you so much and I hope that you felt that as well. You were and still are an inspiration to so many, Mike and I included. We will never let your memory die.

Chucky, Obviously, I didn't know you. You resemble my son in law, in many ways. I visit this page often, because, the police have protected me, and assisted me many times, while I worked in the field. So that I do not take away from your honor, I will not write my true feelings about the cowards who took you from us. I am confident that God is keeping you in His peace, and love. And, may He watch over your beautiful family. Someday sir, I will shake your hand. You are truly a hero!

I live in Raleigh County and I am saddened that one of Beckley's finest is no longer with us. I am truly reminded of the perilous times that we are living in. Det. Smith, by all accounts, demonstrated what bravery truly is. Knowing that your life could come to a screeching halt at any second and yet, still following through with the task at hand.

I never had the pleasure of knowing this fine young man and I am still saddened as if he were son. And in a way he was...a son, brother, and a friend. He belonged to all of us when he chose to pursue the career of defending the citizens of Beckley.

I do know that now when I look at a person in a police uniform, it will be with the utmost respect and gratitude. For the job that they do, and the job that Det. Smith did...I thank you.
