Reflections for Detective Corporal Charles Eugene Smith, II
What a waste of a human life. I hope the scum who did this have it coming for them. Thoughts are with the family.
Police Constable from London,UK

My family's prayers are offered up to Heaven for Mrs. Smith and their child as well as the Beckley PD. They are victims too. Another hero makes this website and as a 32 year old native of WV and wife to a LEO (a former WV Trooper and Sniper) my heart aches for each of you. It sickens me for such a senseless act to take place in America. Much less in the hills of WV!
As my brothers and nephews are fighting in Iraq, my family knows the dangers and death they face each day as soldiers in an unbelievable war. But we live in America and there is not one significant reason for anyone of these heros to be on the website....not one good justification.
I truly believe that the potiental justice a courtroom on earth may give this scum won't compare to the courtroom found high in Heaven above, with All Mighty GOD as the Judge. So Mrs. Smith, you, your daughter and your husband will have a real judgment day in the sweet by and by. Just as the rest of the brave men and women found on this memorial page will experience.
I will pray for you morning and evening that God will give you the strength to make it hour by hour.... then day by day.
Thank you Detective Corporal Charles Smith for the sacrifices you and your family have made to the State of West Virginia.

Corporal Smith, I want to thank you for your dedication in the fight against drugs. I have heard you were a wonderful man, with a zest for life and truly dedicated to your work. God picked you, he needed a special angel in heaven. My heart goes out to your family, friends, and all who loved you. I am sure your fellow comrades will fight the good fight, just as you did. When I think of what happened to you, the song - "I Can Only Imagine," comes to my mind.

Bro,
You did well, you served your community, you answered the dreaded calls, you stood with those who were victims, maybe shed a tear, you were there, and for that your community thanks you!
To the one who took you from your duty, rest assured, God from above will serve the mighty justice. This horrible act will not go unpunished, that is promised to us all.
Till we all meet on the sunny plains of Gods Heaven, rest now.
Goodbye BROTHER,,,

Chucky you are a real life "superman". You were the bravest man I have ever known. Chuck was always "first one in and last one out". He has touched every life he ever came across. He will be missed like crazy and forgotten never. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. He will live in our hearts forever. Now you can play golf everyday all day long. "God blessed the broken road that lead me straight to you". Thank you for protecting me til the very end. I will always love you! Rest in Peace forever. =)

My condolenses and respect go out to Corporal Smith for yet Heaven just opened its doors and let another fallen Hero come home. My heart felt sorrow to your family because as young as they are they have now joined our family of fallen officers. Please know that your family will be in my thoughts and prayers all this week as you prepare for one of the most hectic busiest times of your lives. I wish I could say it gets easier but it gets tolerable and we realize how strong we are. You have a family of all fallen officers families now. To Britney
I can only imagine the pain you are going through. I hope you will take comfort in knowing that Chuck’s love for you will live on forever. You and Taylor will be in my prayers and I promise that Chuck’s memory and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
To Taylor
I hope some day you will understand how special your father was. He loved you and you gave his life meaning. Know that your father died protecting freedoms most people take for granted. As you grow up, never question your father’s love for you. He died doing his very best to make the world you will grow up in, a better, safer place.
To my brothers and sisters of the Beckley Police Department
My heart goes out to all of you. Recognize you must come together and go forward with the knowledge that you are filling in the gap of the Thin Blue Line left by Chuck’s death. I know you will carry on in spite of this tragedy; because like our fallen hero, you know brave men and women must continue to place themselves in harm’s way to honor his memory and to safeguard your community.

I was just talking to a deputy in the local drug unit this past weekend - he was telling me how he felt so much safer buying drugs than he ever did going to a domestic dispute. The situation is always controlled he told me...your tragic death just goes to show that nothing is ever completely in our control.
Thank you for your dedication Det. Cpl. Smith. My heart goes out to your family, friends and co-workers. May your rest in peace and always be remembered as a hero.

Chuckie,
Thank you for your service to our city and community. You made this a decent, safer place to live by standing up confronting the cowards who hide in the shadows and prey on the weak. I’ll pray for God to strengthen your family and your friends whose lives you enriched and help them get through this. It was a pleasure and an honor to work with you. We will never forget you.
