your sacrifice will not go forgotten........
warriors never die
This is my shield
I bear it before me into battle
But it is not mine alone
It protects my brother on my left
It protects my city
I shall never let my brother out of his shadow, nor my city out of its shelter
When I Die my shield will be before me

My deepest sympathy goes to your family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time. I wish I could have been there beside you on that fateful day....We would have taken the guy down together, or fallen beside each other while trying. Thank you for your service and ultimate sacrifice! I hope that everyone keeps your spirit alive so your young children can appreciate all that you've done for them and the sacrifice that you've made.
Salute.

My thoughts and prayers are with Detective Shields' wife, children, family, friends and co-workers. My first husband was Alabama State Trooper Brian Nichols EOW 2/17/2002 and I am now married to Washington County Deputy Sheriff A.V. Carpenter. We are all family in law enforcement and we all hurt when a family member goes down. God bless you all.

While it is no consolation for your loss, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Detective Shields.
While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven through his selfless service to those he swore to protect.
Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.
