Reflections for Police Officer Scott Alan Wertz

Dear Scott-

I just returned from Washington DC for Police Week and the Police Unity Tour memorial ride, and had the distinct pleasure of meeting your family-Trish, Dustin, Jared, Josh and Barb. And what a great family you have, you were very blessed. They miss you a lot, speak of you often, and keep your memory alive. Like all of us involved on the tour, they are ensuring your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Dustin and Trish were involved in the tour, and they were a pillar of strength, and a great inspiration for all of us involved. You would have been very proud of them. I didn’t know you, but heard a lot about you and your heroism. We got to hear the stories of your bravery and sacrifice, and of your life, and I think by the time the tour ended, everyone involved got a much better idea of just who Scott Wertz was, how much you were loved by your family and friends.

We will ensure that your sacrifice will not be in vain, and you will not be forgotten. Please watch over us and keep us safe as we continue your mission on the streets, and I look
forward to one day walking heaven’s beat with you.

God bless you and your family.

This is to Jared,Josh, and their mom:
Hi! My name is Maverick Levi Mcclenon. I'm 13 years old. I go to Marietta Middle School and I love to play sports. But the most important thing to know about me is I also lost my dad Trooper 663 on my birthday October 1,2006. I met Jared at C.O.P.S. kids week in Washington a few days ago and we noticed we share alot of similarities. Like for instance he said that when he is sad words or lyrics come to his head. I'm the same way and Monday night after we became friends. At about 2am I got to thinking about are dads and words came to my mind and these are them:

I really wouldn't have known you at all
If Jared hadn't stood strong and tall

He told us of your story
And all its great and wonderful glory

He said sports were your favorite thing to do
And they were my dads to

I realy can't wait to meet
I know that will be SWEET

We agreed you two would be waiting at heavens gate
Looking good and smiling great

Your son is a wonderful friend
Whom I will look up to till the very end

I'm very sorry about your dad and husband. I hope we can stay in touch.

Scott,
Wanted to drop by and say hello! What a long emotional week....Glad it's over!
The Police Unity Tour was a huge success. About 1000 riders and their support staff raised and donated $1.15 million dollars in honor of our Fallen Officers to the Memorial.
Virginia Chapter 4 with President Jeff Whitson and all the other members are nothing short of a class "A" act! The Pre-ride meeting was very nice as Jeff paid special tribute to you and your life. He usually starts by reading the latest "Officer Down" incident from ODMP but wanted to do something special for Trish for coming along in support and me riding for you.
Chapter 4 members had so much support and encouragement for Trish and me and that will never be forgotten. It was good to see old friends, and make many more new ones. Thank you all! By the 3rd day of the ride it was very heart warming and alittle overwhelming to see so many riders wearing one of your picture pins that Trish gave out to friends we met who asked if she had anymore so that they could honor and remember you. I rode mostly in the front of the pack but drifted back and forth from time to time and to see the backs of the riders with your picture on their shirt more than once brought a tear to the eye. Also saw a couple of butterflys! Thanks for watching over us all.
There were so many emotional moments through out the last week, riding into the memorial after 3 days and 220+ miles and going to your panel, giving Jared and Josh each a set of dogtags engraved with the NLEOMF Logo and your name and EOW on back, and a SW 10 wristband that I wore in honor of you, giving Trish my Unity Tour jersey I wore on the 3rd day, the bagpipers, Tyler being recognized on the National Stage for his lemonade stand for you, Your name being read out in the Roll Call, Taps, The Capital Lawn Service, placing a flower in the memorial wreath, so many.....
I think this really helped Trish and the boys in the healing process and knowing that they are not alone in this tragedy. The amount of support shown to the survivors was great. Mom and Dad were blown away too...Dad was overwhelmed walking through the guantlet, "sea of officers " saluting and paying respect to our fallen.
I just wish you would have come down on one of my invites while you were with us to experience it and appreciate it. This has been my 10th year and most difficult. Hopefully it was a source of comfort for our family, your friends and co-workers who made the trip to honor you....I also hope to see those people come back again next year and even more.
Always know you are in our daily thoughts and prayers and we all miss you so much.
Love you and miss you,

Well we just got home from D.C. for Police Officer Memorial Week and the Police Unity Tour bike ride. I heard a lot of stories of valor and heroism as I do every year, but this year was special. During the ride and then later in D.C. I got the unique oppurtunity to meet your wife and brother in law who participated in the ride. I got to hear your story first hand from the people who have lived through it. I was able to learn a lot about you from your family, which was cool because you had become more than just a name on the wall. Just wanted to let you know that I think your a true American Hero. As much as any soldier that has fought in any war, cops are the protecters of our freedom right here on the home front. Keep and eye on the rest of us in blue and protect us from above. Your job is far from over and nothing has really changed, except God is your Chief now and patrol area just got a little bigger.

Trish,
I am glad I got to meet you at the vigil on Sunday, although I wish it had been under different circumstances. Take care and remember that you have many people that support you and that you are a truly amazing, strong, wonderful person. Always remembering Scott...

Scott,

Thinking of you today on this very important day in law enforcement. I wish your family didn't have to be involved in the ceremonies in Washington this week.

Trish,

I've been thinking of you so much but have hesitated to call while you are in the midst of Police Week activities. I hope you've had a chance to meet many of the very special people who are going through the same things we are. They really do get it. I'm thinking of you and hurting with you this week. Call me when you get home. Love you, mean it.

Hey Wertzy,

Back from Daytona, weather was awful! Tropical storm and brush fires, what a mess. Your birthday was the only good weather day we had :). Im so disappointed I am here at home and didnt make it to D.C. atleast for the vigil. We had every intention of being there, you know that. Had a butterfly sighting the other day, thanks for that. Still talking about you in the present tense, just too hard to let go.
Love ya,

I really hate thinking about what you guys are going through right now. I hope it was a safe trip down to DC.

Barb...(Mom), When I hugged you today I didn't want to let go....I have no idea where your strength comes from, but I now know where Trish gets it....I saw how sad you were for Trish and the boys and how much you really miss Scott.

Scott,
I know this is not where your family wants to be right now but they will find strength from other "VICTIMS", and learn that they are not alone in this CRUEL world that we live in.

Snowball is fine and is the hit of the neighborhood....That's right....A pure Wertz...A HIT...

LOVE YOU GUYS,MEAN IT!!!!

Hi #2 son

Everytime I get on this site, it just breaks my heart when I see your picture. I just have to remember all the good and wonderful times we had over the years.

After all these months I still can't and don't want to believe you are gone. I wish this would just be a bad dream, but like everyone else, I just have to face the truth and believe we will all be together again some day.

We are getting ready to go the the police week - Police Unity Tour. It is going to be another tough week, but I do believe we will all benefit from it, I hope, especially the boys. They will be going to C.O.P.S. camp for 2 days and be with other kids who have lost their mother or father while serving in the law enforcement field. Maybe it will shed some light on as to why you were taken from us way too soon.

Keep sending us signs of strength to get through this week and be with Dusty and Trish while they are on the bike tour. I do believe this was a good thing for Trish to go on the bike tour and do things for you and in your honor and help in any way she can. She needs to keep her mind occupied on different things and events.

This poem is so you,

God looked around his garden and found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth and saw your SMILING face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest,
God's garden must be beautiful, he only takes the best.
He saw the night was getting tough and didn't want to be unkind,
He closed your weary eyelids and whispered, "You won't suffer, Peace be Thine".
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn't go alone,
Part of us went with you, the day God took you home.
If tears could build a stairway and heartaches make a lane,
We'd walk a path to heaven to be with you again.

We love and miss.

Hi #2 son

Wishing you were here, but we all know that is never going to happen,

The other day in Harrisburg was another tough day to get through. I only wish that these tributes that they have for you and all the others would have been for an act of heroism and not in your memory. I wish it would be that you would be up there receiving an award instead of Trish receiving one in your memory.

Be with Trish and Dusty and give them the strength to get through the next 4 days on the Police Unity Tour and the rest of us, your friends, brothers and sisters to get through the next week. I know it is going to be tough on all of us.

Here is another poem that is so fitting

The way you talked (loud) and the smile you wore
And all the thousand things so dear
We loved about you while you lived
Haven't gone with you from here
They're planted deep in memory's garden
And watered daily with our tears
To keep them ever fresh and vivid
Through all the coming years

We miss and love you very much and never forget.

Hey Scotty,
I just wanted to wish you happy birthday bro'!
We celebrated a few of your birthdays together and they
were "Always" something to remember!
You touched so many people's lives in a positive way while you were here, that I just wanted to to say "Thank You!"
And that you still "live" because of the "memorable moments"
that you shared with all who were around you!
So I want to raise my "Coors Light" can to you and say Happy birthday bro!
Your friend,

Scott,
Today is your day and we will definately throw a few back for you. We all just wish it was with you and not for you. Sorry I haven't left you a note in a while. I've had a hard time coming here lately and trying to put a few words down. With Police Week coming up and fundraising for the Unity Tour, it is a constant reminder driven home again that you are gone.
April 24th was a tough day at the Memorial in D.C. seeing your name etched on the "wall" with all the other brothers and sisters in blue who gave the ultimate sacrafice but we got through it.
The Unity Tour is right around the corner and Trish and I will be leaving next week for Virginia and D.C. for Police Week. The weather report looks pretty good for the ride. I just hope I hold up as I haven't got alot of saddle time in due to my busy schedule with work and the Tour.
I know you are proud as hell of Jared for his performance at the football game. That kid is something.
I also wanted to thank all the family, friends, co-workers and businesses to numerous to list for your contributions for the Police Unity Tour. Your generous support of me in riding for Scott this year have raised over $6,000.00 in his memory for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. I can't thank all of you enough for your support.
Keep watching over us Scotty, give us the strength and guide our riders next week on a safe and purposeful ride to remember as we converge on D.C. to honor you and all the other officers who went before you trying to make our communities a safer place....
Happy Birthday Bro.

I miss you now just as much as I ever did. I can't stop thinking about you and how lonely this world is without you in it. The grief and the pain are still so very real ... I don't think they will ever go away. Happy birthday a little early my friend.
