Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Anthony Callin

Mike,

I still talk about you. I am teaching a block in the Academy again, and as always, share your story, and the day we lost you. I share this for a reminder for new cops. I show this to honor your life and remember your passing. You will never be gone! You're just not HERE. Please know that time goes on, but we have not forgotten.

Michael

Another year has begun and there has not been a day in which I have not thought of you since August 02, 2006. All of our plans for the future have changed but know even though you are not here in person, your memory still lives in us. You were such a great son, a dedicated and loving husband, and an endearing brother. You were such a joy to your mother and me. Your testimony lives on!

We will always be thinking of you.

Mike,
This summer we visited Washington D.C. One destination we had planned on seeing was the Officer's Memorial. We wanted Alex to be aware of the dangers Ben and Nick face on the streets and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice officers pay for protecting us. It's hard to believe that it has been 3 years. We found your name on the wall and spent time reflecting about AWANA, youth group trips and your friendship and fun times with Ben. I find that I take care of a lot of your fellow officers at my work and we always exchange stories and thoughts of you. You are so missed!!!!!!

Michael -

although this post is coming a day after the anniversary of your passing into His arms, the delay is not because you were forgotten. Quite to the contrary, I was out last night remembering times when we were finding bad guys, field testing drunks, and just hanging out on cold nights in front of the convention center. I was also toasting your memory with anyone who would raise a glass with me.

Rest well, Mike - we will meet again, in His time.

Michael,

On this night, I can only imagine how proud you are of your entire family, Vicki, your mom and dad, and Christina. It has not been easy but so many times your family has lifted up so many hurting souls when they themselves have been in so much pain. They are such amazing people.

On this night, know you are thought of and saluted for such bravery in the face of grave danger.

Rest easy. God speed brother!

AS I WALKED INTO SCHOOL THIS MORNING, THE CONVERSATION OTHERS WERE HAVING WAS ABOUT THE NEWS OVERNIGHT. OUR CONVERSATION QUICKLY TURNED INTO OTHER INCIDENTS THAT INVOLVED POLICE OFFICERS. A STAFF MEMBER THEN ASKED ME IF I REMEBERED THE INCIDENT INVOLVING A DEPUTY WHO WAS STRUCK BY A VEHICLE ON I-4. I THEN REACHED INTO MY VEST AND PULLED OUT A PICTURE OF YOU AND I AT A MOTORCYCLE RIDE. I THEN SPENT THE NEXT HOUR OR SO TELLING STORIES ABOUT THE FUN TIMES WE SPENT TOGETHER IN SECTOR 5. YOU ARE GREATLY MISSED MIKE AND WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

My son,
We are coming up to that special time of year when our nation will remember our fallen brothers for the 2008 year. There has not been a day since August 02, 2006 that you have not been remembered. We had some great days to remember, the golf, fishing, and great talks. But our future plans never came to pass. I am confident that when our Father called you home and you are in that heavenly place where God preferred you to be, our hope will be to see you one day with our Lord! But I miss you so very much. As the Memorial Week approaches I will again go to your name and be so thankful for the son you were. YOU will never be forgotten!!!

Beyond the boundaries of your city's lights,
Stand the heroes waiting for your cries.
So many times you did not bring this on yourself,
When that moment finally comes,
I'll be there to help.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,
I'll be right here.
Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.
Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,
We'll always be ready because we will always be there.

When there are people crying in the streets,
When they're starving for a meal to eat,
When they simply need a place to make their beds,
Right here underneath my wing,
You can rest your head.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,
I'll be right here!
Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.
Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,
We'll always be ready because we will always be there...

There... there... there...

Hope and pray that you'll never need me,
But rest assured I will not let you down.
I'll walk beside you but you may not see me,
The strongest among you may not wear a crown.

On that day when you need your brothers and sisters to care,
I'll be right here!
On that day when you don't have the strength for the burden you bear,
I'll be right here!
Citizen soldiers holding the light for the ones that we guide from the dark of despair.
(Citizen soldiers)
Standing on guard for the ones that we sheltered,
We'll always be ready because we will always be there.

Dear Deputy Sheriff Michael Callin,
I never had the honor of meeting you, but my husband and daughter attended your ceremony of life. Please know that even though we are a county away, the love and support that LEO families have knows no bounds. Today we honor your life and your bravery. Everyday, in one way or another, you will be honored. Your family will forever remember a special person who touched their lives...only to be gone too soon. Your LEO family will look up to the one who everyone seemed to respect and appreciate. The citizens who felt safety in your presence will stop from time to time to reflect on someone who was willing to do what many will never do. Deputy Callin, you are a hero...and we WILL remember.
Keep a watchful eye on your family and LEO family. God Bless!
In His name...

Mike,

I do not think words can ever describe how much I miss you. For me it's still hard to comprehend your short, but well lived life. Your presence has never left my thoughts. You always lit up the room when you entered it and you never missed an opportunity to tell a friend, coworker, or relative about Jesus Christ. I am so thankfful to be a Christian because I know there will be a day when I will be able to give you a hug and joke around like the old days. God truly blessed me when he led you to our family.

D/S Callin, R.I.P. & GOD BLESS, I never had the opportunity to meet you, but I was at the Acacemy with your sister. She was doing the LEO side and I was on the Correction side. I can still remember that day when our instructor came into our class and told us what had happened. We were all praying for your family and praying she would graduate! ALL our hearts were heavy and it was tragic loss for ALL of us! I am glad to hear your sister is doing great and she is carrying on the family tradition. You are a credit to your Family, to your Agency and to every LEO who protects and serves! Thank You for what you did and the joy you brought to everyone who knew you! Those of us who didn't will see you in Heaven being 10-8 in GODS agency!!!!

Michael,

I have visited this site several times but have never been able to write something. These past two years have flown by in some ways, and dragged on in other ways. One thing has remained the same: you have been missed. A lot has changed in the past 2 years. I don't wish the past hadn't happened, but sometimes I do wish you were here to walk through it all with us. For the past few Augusts' I have lost very important men in my life and I'm about to loose another one. I know he could have benefited from your friendship, strength, and encouragment throughout everything. I know God knows what is best and I'm trying to trust Him. None of this surprised Him. He is continually molding, teaching, and sanctifying us. Just sometimes we don't like how he teaches us, but the lesson always ends up being priceless. I have learned so much from Vicki. She is an amazingly strong woman. I know my family misses you and are proud to call you friend. Until we meet again...

My son,

It has been a long 2 years! There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about you. Everywhere I go, I have so fond of memories of your life. Only by the grace of God do i and oiur family garner strength to make it through the day. You would be so proud of your sister to see her in uniform and performing her duties so very well. So many of your friends (and now mine) have come alongside of her. They truly look on her as you would, like thier sister. So we have come to this day and I am so proud of who you were and are. As I think of your life I know you finished well. I love you son.

It is so hard to believe that it has been 2 years since that day when our son Michael was taken from us. The pain and loss we feel is still so strong that it seems like only yesterday that the tragic events unfolded. We all miss him so much and there is not a day when he is not in our thoughts. So much has changed over the past 2 years but our love for our son will never change. Our family remains strong and we are so thankful for all the support we have received from so many. God has shown His mercy to us and given us the strength to carry on. Despite the unbelievable loss we feel, we have so much to be thankful for. We focus on these things and continue to pull together to encourage and uplift each other.

I just spoke to someone from church about you the other day. It's funny how much we take for granted. I can still remember the midnight shifts in 2 when you would call me from the Comm Center and tell me about the idiots calling in. Just know you are missed and we grieve our loss but celebrate your gain of Heaven
