My great grandmother, was Sarah Jane Vaught Bell. (husband and soldier, Oscar F. Bell died in the war). Her Mother, Lucinda Birdwell Vaught was the sister of Constable John Birdwell. Sarah, widowed, is shown on the census living with the David Harvell family at the time her Uncle John Birdwell was shot and killed, along with David Harvell. Sarah Jane's mother was Lucinda Birdwell Vaught, sister of Constable John Birdwell, and Col. Allen Birdwell. I thank historians who have helped me do years of research on my family, honoring those who came and served Nacogdoches and our country. Lovey Rhodes Smitham

John Birdwell Jr. (1812-1871) was the brother of my great-great-great-grandmother Sarah Birdwell Isbell. He was buried in the Birdwell family cemetery twelve miles away at Mt. Enterprise, by his brother and father and other relatives, according to his niece Addie's bible. The markers were piled up and thrown into a ditch by the disrespectful farmer who acquired the homeplace and ploughed under the graveyard in the 1960s. This was about the time that the log house was moved to Monte Verde Plantation where it is preserved today. The house stood by the cemetery.

At role call in was my honor to read the name of Constable John Birdwell Killed in the Line of Duty on December 19, 1871. It was shame that 134 years had to passed before the honoring Constable Birdwell, (John 15:13)
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. After fining this article, I have spoke with others and the Deputized Citizen David W. Harvell, who was killed in the Line of Duty on December 14, 1871 while assisting Constable Birdwell will be Honored at the 2008 Nacogdoches County Law Enforcement
