Step and I joined DKPD around the same time and both went to South Pct initially, then other precincts, and finally SWAT together before I left. I vividly remember him as one of the most dedicated officers, as a rookie and a veteran. His tempo never changed, 100%. This is admirable in a job that can ware you down over the years. Despite politics in the department and rollercoaster morale, Step knew one speed when it came catching bad guys....full throttle. As noted in newspaper reports, he was a mentor to many a new officer. Always a smile on his face and an upbeat attitude, this guy was happy doing his job. His time on earth was well spent, from saving the life of a fellow officer in a burning vehicle to insuring the predator he faced down that night never kills again. He made more than just a positive contribution; he saved lives at risk of his own. We would all love to change the outcome of that night, but I would venture to say that Step has no regrets of his honorary service. I am very proud to have worked a "beat" with him and equally as proud of his partner that night who fought the “good fight” by his side. I am overseas now and wish I could attend the funeral to pay my last respects and express to his family the privilege I had in knowing him. His family, friends, and fellow officers are in my prayers. In my years I have always noted this one quote when such a good person has moved on, “Men will stand before your grave and speak of your reputation. But angels will stand before the throne of God and speak of your character”. Step, thanks for making the choice to pin that badge on everyday. You will not be forgotten.

As a wife of an officer, you live with this fear everyday. I only met Step once and it was many years ago at North Precinct. You could tell he was an Officer that anyone would feel alittle safer working along side of. I hope that gives your family a sense of peace and honor as they cope with the days and years ahead.
