The Thin Blue Line

There is a line the color of the sky on a clear afternoon
There is a line the hue of the ocean on a bright sunny day
There is a line the purest shade of a newborn's eyes awakening for the first time
There is a line that protects us from harm in all we do
whether day or night
There is a line no one can penetrate no one can alleviate
There is a line made of those who choose to follow a calling many do not hear and still more do not comprehend
They choose to walk the path of fear, hate, and mistrust
taken by so few but marked by so many And when one leaves this line they leave a legacy but the line does not break
for the remaining must still protect There may be emptiness
a loss, or sadness but never a hole not in this line
This line that holds the ghosts of the souls who have gone
and the souls of the ghosts who will be

I only met Jason once at my Tire store. I remember his father and my father served together on the DHPD, it is a tragedy when someone who gives so freely of his self has something like this happen. I can only feel the sorrow and anger for what has happened. I wish your family to deal with this as best that they can, I couldnt even imagine what this would feel like.
God rest your sole, your work here is completed you are in a better place.
God Bless

“When God made Peace Officers….”

When the lord was creating Peace Officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And the Lord said, Have you read the spec on this order? A Peace Officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn’t touch, and not wrinkle their uniform.

They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day.

They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half- eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands.

The angel shook her head slowly and said, “Six pairs of hands….No Way.”

“It’s not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord, “It’s the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have.”

That’s on the standard model? asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, “May I see what’s in there sir?” (When they already know and wishes they had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of their head for their partners’ safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, “ You’ll be alright ma’am, when they know it isn’t so.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching his sleeve,” rest and work tomorrow.”

“I can’t,” said the Lord, “I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on civil service paycheck.”

The angel circled the model of the Peace Officer very slowly, “Can it think?” she asked.

“You bet,” said the Lord, “It can tell you elements of a hundred crimes, recite Miranda warnings in it’s sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five judges to debate the legality of the stop…and still it keeps it’s sense of humor.

This officer also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with crime scenes painted in HELL, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim’s family’ and then read in the daily paper how Law Enforcement isn’t sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Peace Officer. “There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model.”

“That’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”

“What’s the tear for?” asked the angel.

“It’s for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice.”

“You’re a genius,” said the angel.

The Lord looked sober. “I didn’t put it there,” he said.

Jason,
I dispatched you for two years on Midnights and you were truly one of the good guys. You would come in and call us "Little Ladies", ask us if we wanted to feel your *guns* and just generally act like the big kid you were. On the 24th, at 10:06pm, during the evening news, when I first learned of the shooting and heard your name, I started praying for you. Jay, you were a friend and you will be missed. My heart aches for your family, for your son especially. Peace be with you.

When I had heard that one of my brother in laws fellow officers life had been tragically ended I was heart broken to think of the overwhelming loss that his brothers at the department and extended family and friends have experienced. You just never get used to the loss of someone so close to you. May god be with you all and my Jason rest in peace.

Lizzy,
I do not know you but both our boyfriends are police officers. I read the reflection that you left and I too am sorry that --- ruined your date. I can only imagine what you must be going through. Everyday I watch my boyfriend walk out that door to go work. I takes strong girls like us to date a man of such a self-less profession. I can only hope in the empty days to come you find peace in knowing that so many people never got to share in his life like you did, so many of us never even got to meet him. You shared love with Kasona nd nobody can ever take that much away from you.

It is always a sad day when an officer is taken away but it really hurts when you think of the family left behind. I have tears in my eyes thinking of his son and how much he will miss his daddy. I have two son's of my own and I pray they never have to feel what Jason's family is feeling right now. I do however feel myself slightly lifted knowing that Jason was doing what he was born to do and am sure he loved doing it! My prayers go out to his department as I know how hard it must be right now excepting what has taken place. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with Jason's family. Smile knowing that Jay is walking with God and the fellow blue angel's watching down on all of us!

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

To all of those who have posted their condolences to us without having had the joy and pleasure of knowing Jason personally, thank you for having us in your hearts and on your minds. Jason will be sorely missed but never forgotten by all of those whose lives he touched.

It's your "Little Mack". Jason, as I think of you all I can do is cry. When we met last summer, I fell for you right away. You always made me laugh and have fun. In the several months we dated you made everything a blast. Jason, you loved your job so much you worked so hard to keep Dearborn Hts safe. This city lost a true hero. As someone who loves you and knew you so well, I don't feel as protected to live in this city without you being here to drive by and flash your lights to make sure I was safe. Dearborn Hts lost a special man. No one will ever replace you. You left this Earth too soon, but you went out doing what you loved unselfishly. I'm so grateful you called a few weekends back and we were able to have one more drink together at the Scoreboard. I'll always remember that night. I will never forget the fun we had at the Red Wings games. I'll always remember the fun we had getting me over my fear of the hot tub. I'll always keep the CDs you made me close to my heart. They are full of memories. You will never be forgotten, "Big Man". May God Bless you Jason. I hope you can feel that Cam will always love his "Jay Jay". Rest in peace my friend and love, Your "Little Mack"

Jason
To many of us you were our friend and co-worker, but you have been recognized as a hero by everyone, including those who did not personally know you. Our department and city will never be the same without you and you will not be forgotten. I am sure you are now one of our guardian angels. God Bless you and my prayers go out to your family.
