How many times before we get serious. I didn't know you but I know a lot just like you. Thanks, rest in peace and
we will try to continue what you started. If a family member
reads this I hope after all the tears you realize you aren't alone and never will be as long as one police car somewhere is rolling. God Bless You.

To Bill's Family
I know that you know how good a man Bill really was, especially to the children. I am a grateful Mom - grateful for the respect and love that Bill showed my boys when they were being less than upstanding citizens. Bill tried so hard to show them the right path. He was never rude or harsh with them, no matter what they did. He respected them - even when they were doing wrong. He was always kind to me, understanding and thoughtful in the way he spoke to me and tried to help me when my boys were not doing as they had been taught. I want you to know that I credit Bill (we always called him Jonesie) for being instrumental in turning my sons in the right direction.

I also want to tell you a little story that also reflects how we all felt about Jonesie. I was driving down HWY 27 one day when I saw Jonesie standing out in the middle of the southbound lane. His patrol car was on the side, with two vehicles already pulled over, and his blue lights shining. He was "pointing" another car over at the time. Imagine that, a policeman that was so respected - the driver of the car he was pointing to obediently pulled over too. I remember laughing all the way home at our Officer Jonesie. I will miss him. My boys will miss him. May God hold you, his family, in his hands. I know he will be holding Jonesie by the hands as he enters the gates.
A Grateful Mom

First, I would like to say this about my friend Bill “Bam-Bam” Jones.

My condolences go out to his family, the Roane County Sheriff’s Department and all of his friends. His untimely death is a great loss to all.

I first met Bill in Crossville when he worked for the Crossville Police Department.
We worked out at the same gym. I was not even in Law Enforcement at the time.
He would take someone under his wing and always encouraged them to do their best, by coaching them to push the envelope in a positive way, whether it was working out at the gym or being a police officer.

He was always a positive influence to be around no matter what type of situation arose.

Later, I had the opportunity to be his partner on the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department from 1983 until 1986, I was in the first graduating class of POST certified Reserve Officers in 1984 with the CCSD and at that time I was treated like a rookie by most of the other officers, Bill took me under his wing and coached me in the right way to handle situations and police work. He was always constantly vigilant in my safety along with his and we still got the job done. We spent many hours on patrol. I knew the man behind the badge and the integrity he fearlessly stood for.

His untimely death is a double-edged sword. I know he would give his life for his partner and any citizen in harm’s way. He knew the risks, he was prepared, he was experienced at doing the right thing at the right time and nobody can convince me otherwise. Most of all he was doing the job he chose to make a career of. Dying in the line of duty is the highest honor that can be given to any Law Enforcement Officer. Bill deserves that honor. Sadly, at the same time it is a great loss to his family, the Roane County Sheriff’s Department, Roane County residents, and he will be surely missed by all that knew him.

I do pray that the cowards that killed by ambushing Bill Jones and his partner Mike Brown receive the appropriate measure of justice they deserve.

Isaiah 54:17
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

John Cunningham
(former partner) CCSD 1983-1986

Bill, There is a place in our heart that will never be filled. You have been a good friend and "camping neighbor" for a long long time. We will always treasure the hours spent around the camp fire just talking and telling "stories". We have watched you with Trevor since he was a litle boy trying to use that 30 lb. wedge to bust firewood. We saw the light on your face a couple of weeks ago when you stopped for a visit when we asked about Trevor. You just smiled that great big wonderful smile and your eyes just sparkled as you said, "Oh, you know Trevor, he's just Trevor!" Every time we see someone trying to build a campfire and just have smoke, we will think of you, you said you were part Indian and only built a fire for smoke signals anyway. We will miss you. The Roane Couty Sheriff's Department has lost a true and loyal officer and a wonderful friend. Bless you and your family.

The Modern Knight

By oath and honor he is bound,
By faith he is so oft tried,
To protect strangers unknown,
He would dutifully die.
Daily he dons his armor,
At the start of each new day,
To meet the day with safety,
He doth pray.
Though modern are his trappings,
His shield-His vest,
He now bears the weight of badge and vest.
Be respectful of his arms and show him no ill,
For his responsibilities are great,
To enforce justice's will.
Thus, in these dark days when evil is alight,
Pray for your protector!
Yea, The Modern Knight!

To the family of Deputy Bill Jones, I want to send my heartfelt sympathy in this hour of grief. Law Enforcement is more deadly than ever before. It is with sadness that Deputy Jones had to end his shift like this.
It is my sincere belief that God has made Deputy Jones very comfortable in heaven. Thank God for our men and women in uniform. Without their bravery, this world would reap of hideous lawlessness! May God give the family strength in this time of severe grief. But remember, other officers are grieving with you. Sincerely Tim Langley
