Reflections for Deputy Sheriff William Birl Jones

To the family, friends, and fellow Officers of Deputy Jones,

Your sacrifice will always be remembered and Bill's actions in the face of overwhelming odds will always be a testimony of what it means to never give up. He has given that last full measure of devotion to duty. His family, friends and partners can rest in the knowledge that he and Mike Brown died doing what they both loved most. They may both be gone, but they will certainly not be forgotten. Their courage and devotion to duty will live on in all who honorably wear the badge.

My prayers go out to all who knew these fine men.

A great guy, all around. I knew Bill about 20 years ago and he was the truest type of law enforcement officer. Never the stereotypical "cop", but a man who made the badge shine. And he was so proud of being part-Choctaw Indian. I had not seen him since his hair turned gray, as in his picture here. It is not too much to say that he died as he would have chosen to--in the line of duty, and facing the meanest of us all, without hesitation. He was born, lived and died to be a law enforcment officer. His pal Mike Brown was also an acquiantance, and he too, loved the police service and died as he might have chosen to. The people they served, in essence all of us, are fortunate to have had them. A credit to the profession and to the community.

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us, what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal". As we read the quote from Albert Pike we think of Bill Jones. Everyone that knew him remembers great things that he has done for our community in a whole. He was a true officer to Roane County. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and sadly missed by all who loved him. We wish to send prayers to all family members and friends of both Bill and Mike. We will miss him on our streets of Roane but we know he is patrolling the streets of gold. To all officials who take part in our everyday lives to serve and protect may God be with you in all you do.

I am not familiar with Deputy Jones, but I wish to express my heartfelt condolensces to his family, friends, and fellow officers. There are too many senseless death in today's world, and too few officers to cover it on an even basis. To those willing to go out day in and day out to serve and protect those of their communities I'd like to say "Thank you" they are two small words that aren't even enough to express the graditude I have for police men and women of today. You have a thankless joh, no matter what you do you are criticised and chastized, but you do it anyhow. I have the utmost respect for you all. Again "Thank you".
To Deputy Jones' family, I wish there was a way to ease the hurt and loss you are feeling, but there isn't, but try to take comfort in knowing that he is with God now, and he is watching over you from above. God Bless and keep you.

There are no words to explain the great loss of Deputy Bill Jones. I lived in Rockwood for a number of years and you could always count on Bill to be on duty and to have a smile on his face. I can only say to his family that our hearts are very heavy and they are in our prayers. Tomorrow we start to say good-bye but we will never forget the great sacrifice he gave. He was a Hero in every sense of the word.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the things that you have did for Roane County/Rockwood. You was a great officer and there will be no one else that could ever come close to you.
I never will forget the time I lived in a apartment and there was a snake on the steps and you came to our rescue!
That might not seem like a big deal to some but to me and my three children it was a very big deal! Thank you Bill Jones!
May you rest in peace..

Bill, I was so sorry to hear what happened. We (Roane County Area) all know they were ticking timebombs for as long as I can remember. Although we only met a few times when you were with Rockwood PD, It still saddens me that we have lost yet another brother in blue. My sincere condolences go out to your family. Just remember that you are not forgotten as you patrol the streets of Heaven.

To The Family of Deputy Bill Jones;
I grew up in Rockwood and have deep sorrow for Deputy Bill Jones Family. Growing up in Rockwood and being an Officer this has really hit home with me and I have the family in their prayers. Also if any member of the jones family want to contact me they can E-mail me at anytime and I will give them my number as he is a fallen comrad and I feel that even though Bill has fallen their family will always be a part of my family may God Bless you and keep you safe for Bill is now protecting the Streets of Heaven. I have has this article for a long bit now I figured I would share it with his family and Friends the author is unknown.
THE GREAT POLICE OFFICER Well, Mr. Citizen, it seems you've figured me out. I seem to fit neatly into the category where you've placed me.
I'm stereotyped, standardized, characterized, classified, grouped, and always typical. Unfortunately, the reverse is true . . . I can never figure you out.

From birth you teach your children that I'm the bogeyman, then you're shocked when they identify with my traditional enemy . . . the criminal!

You accuse me of coddling criminals . . . until I catch your kids doing wrong.

You may take an hour for lunch and several coffee breaks each day, but point me out as a loafer for having one cup. You pride yourself on your manners, but think nothing of disrupting my meals with your troubles.

You raise hell with the guy who cuts you off in traffic, but let me catch you doing the same thing and I'm picking on you. You know all the traffic laws . . . but you've never gotten a single ticket you deserve.

You shout "foul" if you observe me driving fast to a call, but raise the roof if I take more than ten seconds to respond to your complaint.

You call it part of my job if someone strikes me, but call it police brutality if I strike back. You wouldn't think of telling your dentist how to pull a tooth or your doctor how to take out an appendix, yet your always willing give me pointers on the law.

You talk to me in a manner that would get you a bloody nose from anyone else, but expect me to take it without batting an eye.

You yell something's got to be done to fight crime, but you can't be bothered to get involved.

You have no use for me at all, but of course it's OK if I change a flat for your wife, deliver your child in the back of the patrol car, or perhaps save your son's life with mouth to mouth breathing, or work many hours overtime looking for your lost daughter.

So, Mr. Citizen, you can stand there on your soapbox and rant and rave about the way I do my work, calling me every name in the book, but never stop to think that your property, family, or maybe even your life depends on me or one of my buddies.

Yes, Mr. Citizen, it's me . . . the lousy cop!

To the Jones Family this really doesn't summarize Bill everytime I saw him he was smiling and spoke to everyone that met him. I will always remember Bill as Sgt. Jones with the Rockwood Police Department, So his dear loved ones don't be suprised if you saw that article appear at the cemetary. I am hoping to attend the Funeral in case I can't my prayers are with you and may GOd be with you we know that he has called a great man home. And to his Family and His RCSO Family you can E-mail me at [email protected]
With all the love and Respect
