JONES ME AND JENN WERE GOING THROUGH SOME OLD STUFF IN A DRAWER THE OTHER DAY AND FOUND A LAW ENFORCEMENT ZIPPO LIGHTER THAT YOU GAVE ME ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. WHEN I LIT THE LIGHTER UP IT GAVE THIS HUGE FLAME. JENN NEVER DID LIKE TO USE MY ZIPPOS BECAUSE SHE SAID THE FLAME WAS TOO BIG AND WAS WORRIED SHE'D WOULD BURN HERSELF. I TOLD HER THAT IT WAS THE WAY YOU ALWAYS HAD THEM SET UP AND IT WAS JUST A HABBIT FOR ME FROM BEING AROUND YOU. I WISH YOU COULD OF BEEN THERE TO SEE THE LINE OF POLICE OFFICERS AT YOUR FUNERAL. THERE WAS A LOT OF POLICE BIKES LINED UP AND ME AND TODD WERE SITTING THERE LOOKING AT THEM. TODD SAID THAT IF YOU WERE THERE YOU WOULDNT HAVE PAID ANY ATTENTION TO ANYTHING THING BUT THE BIKES, THAT IT WOULD HAVE MADE YOUR DAY. AFTER YOUR BARRIEL THAT NIGHT A BUNCH OF US GOT TOGETHER AT THE HOUSE AND TALKED ABOUT YOU ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT. IT WAS ME, JENN, HERRALL, SHAMUS, TONY, WALLY, LACY, TINY, KENDAL AND TROOPER SMITH AND HIXON SWUNG BY. ALL NIGHT WE WAS TELLING OLD WAR STORIES INVOLVING YOU. AND I PROMISE YOU THAT AT THE END OF EVERY STORY WE WERE BUSTING OUT LAUGHING ABOUT YOU. I KNOW THATS HOW YOU WOULD WANT US TO REMEMBER YOU AND TALK ABOUT YOU, SO WE DID IT JONSIE STYLE "YOU KNOW WHAT IM GETTING AT". I ESPECIALLY REMEMBER ONE WHERE ME AND YOU WERE TALKING ON THE SOUTH END AND MICHAEL HERRALL CAME PULLING UP AND HIT THIS WATER PUDDLE SPLASHING ME AND YOU, THEN HERRALL GOT OUT AND STARTED SCREAMING AND JUMPING AROUND LIKE SOME NUT CASE. YOU LOOKED AT ME AND SAID "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU CALL THAT"? YOU DIDNT KNOW HIM AT THE TIME BUT AFTER THAT INCIDENT, YOU GOT TO KNOW HIM AND I MUST SAY HE KEPT YOU ON YOUR TOES. WE WILL ALWAYS SIT BACK AND TELL STORIES ABOUT THE WONDERFULL BAM BAM BILL JONES. YOU WERE LIKE A FATHER TO ALL OF US AND WE KNOW YOU WILL STILL BE WATCHING OVER US. WE MISS YOU SIR.

It was a great honor to have had a chance to know and work with you. I will miss running through mud puddles and getting on the P.A system and making noise and calling Tubby and Jerry to see what you said after i would go by. It was a great feeling knowning that you were always close looking out for us and to give us advise. You are and always will be a legend that we always love talking about to family and friends and new recruits of law enforcement for many gerations to come. Hearing many people tell stories about you always puts a great big smile on thier face and thier gratest remark was that you treated them like you own son. Sargt Jones you are Like a father to me and hundreds of others and will never be forgotten. You are "The Father of Law Enforcement" god bless you and your family.

Tammy, The Jones Family and all the Law Enforcement Officers. This says it all.
When God Made Police Officers:
When the Lord was creating Police Officers, he was working into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You are doing a lot of work on this one". And the Lord said, "Have you read the specifications for this one? A Police Officer must be able to run five miles thru a dark alley, scale walls, go into homes that a health inspector would not enter and still not wrinkle their uniform."
They must be able to sit in a patrol car all day at a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day." They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running mostly on cold black coffee and half eaten meals and have six pairs of hands."
"Six pairs of hands, NO WAY!" said the angel as she slowly shook her head. "It's not the hands that's causing the problem." said the Lord, "It's the three pair of eyes that an officer must have." "Is that required on the standard model?" the angel asked.
The Lord answered, "One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before they ask,"May I see what's in there sir?" Already knowing what he may find. "Another pair on the side of his head to keep an eye out for his partner and one in front to look reassuringly at a bleeding victim, saying "You're going to be all right" when he knows it isn't so.
The angel said,"Lord, rest and work on this tomorrow." "I can't," said the Lord,"I already have one model that can put a 250 lb. drunk in a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on an officers paycheck." The angel asked,"Can it think?"
"You bet!" said the Lord, "It can tell you the elements of hundreds of crimes, recite the Miranda in it's sleep, detain, investigate, search and arrest a criminal on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate if the stop was legal. It keeps it's sense of humor, has phenominal self control. They can deal with crime scenes straight from hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family and read the daily paper about law enforcement are not sensitive to the rights of the criminals. It can wipe away thes tear of a crying child with a piece of candy, comfort a wife who has been abused or a Mother whose child is in more trouble than anyone can ever imagine and still have more friends than it will ever know. It can shoot as straight as an arrow and live the same way. A Police Officers words can scare a criminal the way no other one can and the same Officer can soothe the fears and give comfort like no one else, it must be as hard as nails on the outside and as soft as a cloud with a huge heart on the inside."
Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Police Officer, "There's a leak in this one, I told you that you were trying too hard!"
That's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear." "What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for all the bottled up emotions, for fallen comrades, for their commitment to that piece of cloth called the American flag and for Justice." "You're a genius!" said the Angel. The Lord looked at the angel and said,"I didn't put it there."
BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, FOR THEY SHALL SEE HEAVEN.

My heart and prayers go out to Bill's family. I met Bill in the mid 1980's when he worked with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. I was in high school and Bill was helping with the Explorer program, teaching teenagers about law enforcement and in many ways just being a Big Brother to us all. From the time I met Bill I had the utmost respect for him. He was a great example, and from reading other reflections I know he continued to help other young officers and citizens as well. The impression you made is one of the reasons I chose law enforcement as a career. The world has lost a true hero, but we shall all meet again someday in a better time and place. Heaven is your reward for the time you have spent in hell. God Bless You and be with your family in the days to come.

Brother,
My heart grows heavy at your loss. Your passing brings near the constant threat that we face every minute. The outside world will never know the burden that we carry, but they will know that you gave your all. Rest easy now and let us stand the post of justice for a time, and know that you will never be forgotten by the tie that binds us all together.

As I read Deputy Jones' reflections I can't help but think of a close friend Deputy Jason Scott (EOW 3/12/04). We think of officers as the rough & tumble type but seeing that Deputy Jones was called Bam Bam, and Jason was called Fluffy makes us realize they are all just teddy bears in uniform.
My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Jones & Mr Brown's families through this tough time. Hug your loved ones every day, and never take any moment for granted.
