Oh Gary,

This is like the last chapter in a horribly sad story. I’ll never forget that dinner three years ago; how we all laughed about the doughnuts you had to have for dessert, the plans we had to visit you both in NY, the memories of your wedding. It was the last time I held Jennifer in my arms and the last time I saw you smile. We lost touch in the years since Jennifer passed but you were never far from my thought and prayers. I always looked for you whenever a NYC police officer was on TV. Now our only comfort is that you and Ferdy are together….you can make her laugh again. This world has lost two very special people. It is Heaven’s gain. Please watch over us all until we meet again. Rest in peace.

On May 4th, 2005, I lost my brother in the line of duty in a car accident. I hoped that another hero wouldn't be taken after his passing, but sadly enough that's not the case. I pray that your family has the peace that can only come from Jesus Christ and that you, along with my brother and all the ones who have gone before you are patrolling the streets of Heaven together. My God bless you and your family always.

While I did not know Gary, I know many officers in Chesterfield and throughout the state. My mom has worked for the Dept of Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Division for a few years. I often go with her to different areas around the state for trainings and conferences where I have met many officers from all over VA whom I hold dear to my heart. We also have very close friends who are with CPD. Knowing the danger they face everyday really makes you step back and wonder why someone would be willing to do this. Yet it makes you so proud that they do! Its simply dedication, courage and honor. I am so greatful Gary called Chesterfield home and was around to keep my family, friends and myself safer. Since Thursday I have carried such a heavy heart. I keep asking myself why, but I know I'll probably never come up with the answer. I do hope Gary is resting well with his beautiful wife and looking down over us. I have read all 15 pages of this reflection and it constantly sends chills up my spine. It means so very much to have such a strong man such as Gary, serving to protect a place Ive called home all my life. I am truly sorry I never came in contact with him. Without you Gary, Chesterfield will never be the same. To the family and friends- May you find in God the comfort and strength you need to deal with such difficult times. To Officer Diman, you & Gary are both heros! May you have a speedy recovery. Keep your chin up and hold the memories of Gary dear to your heart. To Chesterfield PD & officers around the nation-you are always in my thoughts. Thanks a million for all you do. You'll never realize just how thankful we are for your service. Gary Buro, U-124 GODSPEED!

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE
HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD
NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER
CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to
work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been
violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that
wasn't mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just
got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with
fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept many unmanly tears. I know I
don't deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around
except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me Lord, it needn't be so
grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As
the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward
now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's
streets, you've done your time in hell."

I went to School with Gary in the mid 80's. Back in those days we played on the same football team. I moved away and ran into Gary a few years later. I had no idea our career paths took the same route. I arrived at roll call today and a fellow officer passed a photo to me about an Officer who was killed in Va. I recognized his face. I sat in my Patrol Car tonight and said a prayer for you -Gary. Rest in Peace Brother.I only wish our paths had crossed on the street or maybe the same beat.

There is so much that can be said about Gary that I do not know where to start. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him will always hold fond memories of him in our heart. I can't help but keep thinking about the day he left NY to start his new job in Virginia. He was so excited about becoming a Chesterfield Officer. I wish I could go back to that day and tell him not to go. To everyone else who is an officer themselves this is a big wakeup call because Gary was an excellent officer. If something like this can happen to Gary it can happen to anyone so please no matter where you work be carefull. Gary you have touched so many lives across the country. You were a good man and you are going to be missed more than you could have ever imagined. Thank you for all the fond memories I will now hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life.

Gary - you are a "true hero" in every aspect of the word.
As a wife of a police officer, my heart goes out to Kathy your family and the brotherhood of officers..I can not even begin to imagine what they are going through.
I think I will probably hug my husband a little tighter and longer each time he leaves for work from now on.
May god be with you always.

Gary - While we weren't given much time to get to know you, the day you put that uniform on you became one of "our guys." The turnout at your memorial service today was a testament to the strong, courageous person you were. Know that you and your family will never be forgotten.

While I did not know him personally, I am a resident of Richmond and just the thought of a dedicated officer who did the honor of protecting us has passed, causes me to pay respect. May God's love and blessings be with you during this time. Thank you officer Buro, for caring about people enough to risk your life.

Gary, although I only met you a few times while you were on calls at Chippenham ER, I felt like we were friends. You were always smiling and laughing and so nice to our staff in the ER. I remember coming home one night and asking my fiance', a fellow chesterfield officer, if he had ever met you and telling him how nice you were. I'm sorry that he did not get to meet you. You will not be forgotten. My condolences to Officer Buro's family and especially to Kathy.
