Reflections for Police Officer Gary Jonathan Buro

It was an honor to be in the same academy as Gary and to work in the same county as him. He will be missed. Let it be known that we lost a GREAT officer and person.

God Bless you Gary.

I never had the privilege of meeting Gary, but as a former Marine and current police officer myself, I can attest to his character. I know the committment it takes to achieve & hold both titles. Gary was a member of not one but two very special fraternities...the US Marine Corps & Public Law Enforcement (Chesterfield County Chapter). I wish to express my deepest sympathies to Gary's family & friends along with this thought; When I graduated boot camp I had a drill instructor tell me "there will be wars and Marines will die, but as Marines you will live forever in the name of the corps". Gary is gone from our world but he will always be with us. Whenever you hear the Marine Corps hymn or see a Chesterfield County PD car glide by on patrol....HE'S THERE!!
From your extended family here in Michigan...God Speed brother & Semper Fi Marine.

"Duty," "Honor," "Country" - those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you want to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn. Unhappily, I possess neither that eloquence of diction, that poetry of imagination, nor that brilliance of metaphor to tell you all that they mean.----Douglas MacArthur

Gary Buro can't tell you now all that they mean either. But he wouldn't need to. His life was the epitome of Duty, Honor, Country.
Semper Fi my brother Marine. Carry on.

It’s hard to actually put into words the sense of loss we all feel. On May 4th, our hearts were ripped from us. The grief is overwhelming, but yet, we all find strength to keep moving forward. We believe that the strength comes from your spirit giving us that “big Gary” smile, telling us that everything will be OK. We try to hold onto that hope, but as strong as we sometimes feel, our sadness is unbearable.

Behind the laughs and stories we tell of you when we get together, there are tears. And when we are done telling a “Gary” story there is this automatic silence that we always come to…. In that moment of silence, we don’t have to say anything to each other because we are all thinking the same thing….”we miss you, Gar” – and the reality sets in again…..You see, for those few minutes when we are reminiscing, we are taken away from the truth that you are no longer here. We take a minute and reflect on our private memories and that sadness becomes overpowering again. We draw strength from each other and pull ourselves out of the stillness and keep going. We keep going because we know that’s what you would want us to do.

You continue to be the ‘glue’ that keeps us all together. So, Gary, know that we will continue supporting each other, because we are family. We will keep going, because we have learned that from you. We will never take for granted the strong friendships that we have built for so many years - the friendships that you have such a huge part of.

So, the memories will continue to be shared, the friendships will grow stronger and we will forever hold you close to our hearts.

We love you, Gary and Miss you!

Hey Gar,

I was just thinking about the time we all went to Atlanitc City and you talked the ENTIRE time!! Even when you were driving down and back home, you were in your car alone but you still called us on you cell phone to talk. Lots of dead air lately. We miss you!

I'm very shocked to hear of Gary's death I have not seen Gary in sometime.I am currently in Asadabad Afghanistan serving in the US Army Reserves Civil Affairs as a Civil Affairs SGT. I'm on a leave of Military absence from NYPD.I found out about Gary's death on 30 JUN 06 on America's most Wanted while I was watching TV at Bagram Afghanistan base. I'm in shock!!! Gary and I graduated together from NYPD and worked together in Mid-Town South on foot patrol numerous times. He was very professional, very funny and cool headed. He knew what he was doing. He always talked about his family and relationship.I will miss you friend,,you always made me laugh even when we were stuck together on a crappy detail or foot post,,you always made the time pass. RIP

It is hard to believe that this awful trajedy happened almost 2 months ago. It seems like only yesterday that we heard of this. I never got to know you, but you are missed more than you could imagine. Keep watch over all of us and see you in the future.

I want to tell you that I saw your profile on AMW and was so touched, I had to write. My husband was shot last yr. in April and his partner and best friend killed. His other partner returned fire and killed the suspect. There is only one unit in ATL that has 3 officers assigned to a car and they were one of them...or I would be a widow. I am proud of you, even though I don't know you...you are an outstanding citizen and I feel the pain of your family even though I don't know them. Thank you for serving us, you are a wonderful person.

Had a motorcycle ride today in your honor, there was somewhere around 150 participants. Joe was there, and doing well. I think you would be proud to know your brothers and sisters from both the Police Department, Sheriff’s Office and many others came out to support the ride. Rest in peace brother, and know your are not forgotten.

MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH GARY AND HIS FAMILY. HE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY HIS BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE CHESTERFIELD COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT.

DISPATCHER & WIFE OF CHESTERFFIELD CO OFFICER

June 11, 2006

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Buro. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading all the reflections left for Gary, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Gary's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Gary's life was about so much more than the way he died. Gary will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Buro, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. I am sure you and your wife have now reunited and are enjoying exploring the kingdom of Heaven together. If you two happen to bump into my fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Gary,
We all know you are back with your one true soul mate. There is great comfort knowing you and Jennifer are back in each others arms and walking side by side once again. Your love for each other is bigger than us all. May the two of you rest in peace.
We love you!! Your laughter and memories will never be forgotten.

June 2, 2006

Gary, I only briefly met you while you spent a short time on my shift, and did not get to know you very well. For that I am saddened. I remember the numb feeling when I heard the news, the numbing drive to the hospital. I'm proud to say I served with you, for however brief a time. RIP brother, you're needed in a better place.

Gary I just found out last night about this. I was, and still am, in shock. I remember many nights of laughing and working along side you in Midtown South Precinct. You were always a gentleman and one of the sharpest/hardest working cops I have ever had the pleasure of working side by side with. God must have really needed the best of the best for his army for Him to take you. I hope you are reunited with your wife and other family members who were taken from you so early on. You will always be sorely missed here on Earth..and I hope one day you will be among the people greeting me in Heaven so that I may shake the hand of an old friwnd and hero. Rest in Peace.
