Ed,

It seems like just yesterday when this cocky little dispatcher walked up to me and said, "Hey Sarge...guess what? ... I'm going to the academy!". I remember thinking (or maybe saying), "God help us!". When I explained that you'd have to lose your attitude if you were ever going to succeed, you asked if I'd help you, which I promised I would. Even though you started out cocky, you turned into a damned fine officer. Most of all though, you turned into one of my closest friends.

After several years as a Deputy, you told me that you wanted to become a Trooper. I remember how much you bugged John (my roommate) wanting to know more about DPS. Man, was he ever patient?! When you went to the academy, I looked forward to my nightly reports on what Hell you had been put through that day! I felt like I attended the academy with you! I've never seen you or your family prouder than the day your recruit school graduated. Truth be told, no one could have been prouder of you than I was.

I remember how much you hurt when you and Iliana lost the first baby...and how equally excited you were when you told me that she was pregnant again. Just yesterday you told me how happy you were to be back on the road, and how excited and scared you were about becoming a dad in a month or so.

Today, when I got the call that there was a Trooper down, the first thing I did was call your phone to check on you. I had just told myself not to worry because you didn't answer...when the phone rang again to tell me the rest of the news. Of all the times for me to be out of town. Oh, how I wanted to be there with your family. Even though there was nothing I could do, I wanted to be there just to show them how much I cared for you and them alike. I think they know anyhow.

Ed, I'm going to miss your corny jokes, your laugh, that irritatingly-endless grin...but mostly I'm going to miss you. You are my friend and my "little brother". No one can replace you. I will always cherish the times we spent together.

Iliana, "Mom and Dad" Chavez, Henry, German, Monica...thank you for sharing your husband, son and brother with me. You all have a special place in my heart that is made even stronger now by the loss we all share. I want you all to know that I'm there for you if you need me.

God Bless You All.

By the way Ed, you would have been a great father. It runs in the family.

What a sad story. I am very sorry to hear about another young officer's life taken so early. It is so sad that you will never get to hold your baby. I will keep your family in my prayers. I wish there were a few words to say that would ease some of the pain. I am so sorry!

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Some words for a fallen brother...

"Nine planets round the sun
Only one does the sun embrace
Upon this watered one
So much that we take for granted
So let him sleep outside tonight
Lay down in his mother’s arms
For here he can rest safely

If green should slip to grey
But our hearts still would bloody be
And if mountains crumble away
And the river dries
Would it stop the stepping feet
So let him sleep outside tonight
Lay down in his mother’s arms
For here he can rest in peace

Take all that we can get
When it’s done
Nobody left to bury here
Nobody left to dig the holes
And here we can rest safely

One sweet world
Around this star is spinning
One sweet world
And in her breath I’m swimming
And here he will rest in peace..."
