Jim, A lot of the guys from the base still reflect on your humor and love of life. We all wish that you had the opportunity to deploy with us world-wide and to the local drop zones!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the twenty-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
Rest In Peace.

Hey Jim were coming up on 21 years! There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of you. I have your name engraved on a bracelet that I wear on my wrist everyday. You along with Van D. Johnson are on patrol with me everyday. We had our 20 year reunion at the academy lounge last October, we took a class picture with everyone that was there. You and Van were in the picture. I got to hold your picture! It was a great honor to hold your picture! I miss you buddy, I remember the night we had study group at the base. And the night we were at the Red Onion in the valley where we were stopped by some metro or crash officers! Lots of great memories!!! Hoooraahh!!! 10/87

I met Jim while working the night shift at the Van Nuys Guard Base, he worked Security and I worked on jet engines. We took our lunch together and talked about politics and girls; we were young then. I even assisted Jim with an arrest of trespassers one night. It was that same night Dave Pores pulled a gun on Jim and I while we were writing the arrest report. We were young then. I had herd the radio report of a police officer being killed in north Hollywood, as I got ready to go to work, I knew that it was not Jim, he was too good to be killed on the job, I thought. When I arrived at the Guard base the flag was at half staff. I asked the gate guard if that was for Jim and he said yes. I can’t even tell you how I felt at that moment. It wasn’t the first time that I had lost a good friend to murder in LA. Always shocking when it happens; but with Jim_____just seemed more shocking and such a waste of such a good man. He was an outstanding and squared away individual. Well it has been over 19 years since Jim was taken from us and I think of him often. He was my friend, he was a good man and he is missed by all that knew him. Rest in peace my friend
P.S. naming a park after him would be very nice, and if some one could remind me of where Jim is laid to rest I would appreciate it. [email protected]

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Jimmy its been 19 years, and sometimes I still can't believe your gone. I went and visited you and saw Howard also. I was thinking about when you stopped by the Base that night, prior to going into work. The moon was full and weird, it sat very low in the sky and was bright orange in color. I remember the radio in the office was playing magic carpet ride. I was trying to convince you to get a T/O or call in sick and go out with us that night, but we couldn't get you to do it. It was about 2200 hrs and you said, gotta go to roll call. About 0230 in the morning I got the call from Timbol....couldn't believe it. I think about you alot, wanted you to know that we all think of you (Your Friends). You are not forgotten and your very much missed.

J.B.:
It has been an odd day. I received telephone calls and visits from several people who sought me regarding members of the LAPD Family. I even received a telephone call from a retired NYPD officer who is a friend of Your father.
You had such a short career. However, You are remembered from Coast-to-Coast.

I was one academy class behind you. Working Southeast on probation, your sacrifice helped me think about tactics and return safely each night. I can only hope your family can understand how deeply your death affected us all and left a hole in our hearts. God Speed!!

I was working that awful night. Years later, I had the uneviable task of investigating your murder, to provide the State with statistical data, related to officer survival. RIP, Bro ! As in your USAF days, you "aimed high."

Jim, it's been 18 years since you left us.. I was working at the school police job in gangs in Newton Div when I heard on the news radio about your death... It tore me up inside. Even at your funeral, it was tough saying goodbye. I have never forgotten. I have dedicated myself to having a park in Reseda named in your honor. One Valley boy who made us proud! Jim, I was working the desk the night you died. I had to make all the notificaions to the dept brass, it was the worst night of my 25 year career, everyone was in shock.
I remember you as being one the best recruits I had ever known, you impressed everyone.
Everybody that night just kept saying how we lost one of the really good ones.

I met Jimmy in the Air National Guard. I had just come over from the US Army Reserve. I will always remember Jimmy as a go to guy. So full of life, so willing to help. I was already working LAPD patrol and Jimmy was trying to get on. To him there was no other police department to belong to, except LAPD. He always wanted to her the war stories of patrol. I and others filled him in, along with the other tid-bits of info.
I left the Air Gurad and kinda lost track of Jimmy, then seeing he graduated the Academy and his last transfer he was going to North Hollywood Division.
I still think of you often and know that your in a beautiful place and that someday I'll be there with you to go on patrol.

Jim,
We grew up in the same neighborhood together. Our birthdays are days apart. We played soccer as kids together. We both came on the job at the same time and were ironically assigned to North Hollywood as probationers together. I was working the night you requested assistance on the radio. I arrived by your side moments after you fell. Your partner pointed out where the suspect was last seen and we all worked so hard to find your killer. Later that same night I was ironically standing 35 feet from where your killer was taken into custody (fatally). 18 hours later I finally drove home to contemplate what happened. You were the most squared-away probationer in North Hollywood at the time. After almost 18 years I have still not known a more capable rookie. I think of you always. I provide training during my roll calls on your incident and keep your memory alive to the new and old officers of LAPD. I miss you buddy.
