Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Berry Hensley
Just learned of this distant relatives existence, profession, and ultimate fate. Am so proud of the people my bloodline has produced out of Harlan Co. and especially proud of this one that gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve the good folks of Harlan. God rest your soul, Deputy Berry Hensley.

I'm Berry Hensley's granddaughter. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude and joy that my grandfather's name will be added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. in the spring 2016. I wanted to share this one his page and thank ODMP for recognizing him when no one else was willing to do it.
I want to thank Martin van Heeswijk, one of my graduate students and a Plainfield Police Officer, for making this a reality for my family. I've been working on this for over 15 years but Martin's efforts made it happen. I called my mother to give her the happy news and she was emotionally overwhelmed as you might imagine. She's 86 years old and her father was killed when she was just 2 years old. It took a long time but his sacrifice will finally be recognized. We will attend the ceremony during Police Week.

Well since I was a young boy my family told me of my Great Great Grandpa, and I cant help but feel a connection with his soul. My dad would tell me of my Peppaw Wilse's dad being a Deputy and telling me of all the great things he did for the county and of his tragic end. Unfortunately I never met this great man but I have his bloodline running through my veins and I couldn't be more proud of that fact. I am a Hensley, I am forever proud of my bloodline and am forever in debt to you Deputy Hensley, and Dr Kimberly Jones Dodson for continuing his legacy!!!!

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 81rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be remembered and revered. I am sure you are proud that your family has continued your legacy of protecting and serving.
Rest In Peace

Thanks to all of you who have written on this remembrance page. Berry Hensley was my grandfather and he was killed wen my mother, Margaret Hensley (Jones) was 2 years old. I never knew him but his story inspired me to become a law enforcement officer myself. I worked as a deputy with the Greene County Sheriff's Department in Greene County, TN for several years. Thank you for your sacrifice, grandpa. I love you!
