Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns

To the Severns family and South Bend P.D., we lost a close friend and brother last month to gunfire and we feel the pain that you have. Our prayers are with the family and fellow officers. God Bless all of and do not give up, because I am sure Scott would not want any of you to do so.

Learning of this horrible tragedy, oddly enough, brought back many very good memories of Scott. I remember listening to the stories of how you “won” wrestling matches with Mr. Severns to get to drive his corvette or how, by winning, you didn’t have to do the dishes. I remember at Bethel when you hit the longest home run I had ever seen in my life. As everyone watched in amazement as the ball was in flight, you turned to the catcher of the opposing team (who was giving you a hard time), held out your bat to him, and eloquently stated, “Hold this. I’ll be back in a minute.” I was lucky God granted me the honor of knowing you from the time I was 14yrs old, calling you teammate and friend in the summers, in high school, in college and even in France. I have memories of when you entered a room and the yell of “SEV-DOG” (followed by the eruption of spontaneous barking) and how your smile would light up your whole face and then the room. Those are the memories I will cherish in my heart until I see you again in Heaven.

To many you will be remembered as Cpl. Scott Severns, South Bend Police Officer. To those of us, like myself, that were fortunate to call you teammate and friend, you will forever be remembered as “SEV-DOG”.

You were always a stand-up guy, even in the end. Time to rest, SEV-DOG, and I look forward to the day I can see you again.

You paid the ultimate sacrifice. As prusuing law enfrocement I look up to those who put the vest on, bear the side-arm, and display the badge covering their heart, with full pride. This symbolizes their life commitment to serve and protect those in need. You put yourself on the line, which is the supreme sacrafice, and for that I honor you. Thanks, rest in peace brother...

"A MAN IN BLUE"

A man in blue has lost his life in service of law.
The love that makes this sacrifice the greatest love of all.
A Police man was killed today, the reason I cannot say.
I don't know why he had to die.
The man in blue died for me and you;
we must remember him too.
Flags fly low, let use bow in prayer
for fallen police men everywhere;
and remember this: that they are missed.
The badge burns bright like an evening star
free from a world of war.

A community is strong or weak based on the strength of those in service to it. South Bend is blessed with men and women who are willing to put their lives at risk for the rest of us. There is no greater service than this and we are all saddened when one of those who serves so admirably loses his life. We all take for granted that our law enforcement personnel serve us well and are safe in their jobs. We are not nearly sensitive enough to the risks they take on our behalf. Corporal Serverns death reminds us of the enormous sacrifice people like him make for the good of our community. May God welcome Scott into heaven with a big smile and wide open arms and may He Bless Scott's colleagues as they continue their service to our community. Please know that all of us at 1st Source mourn the loss of Scott and send our prayers to his family and his colleagues. We want them all to know that we deeply appreciate the commitment he made and that they continue to make to see that our community is safe. God Bless you all, Chris Murphy for the employees, customers, and family of 1st Source.
