Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns
Corporal Severns,
Though your death is a tragedy, you died a hero's death, laying down your life for another. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten, and your actins exemplify the attributes of bravery, courage, and honor that we all strive to achieve. You are a role-model whose brave sacrifice and valiant actions will always be remembered. The watch is ours now, brother, and we can only hope to live-up to the high standards you lived by. Our condolences to your family and the brave men and women of the South Bend Police Department. Rest in peace, brother!

Although I never had the privilege of knowing you, my husband played baseball with you when you both were young boys. He tearfully recalled the day you hit a home run off him and said you were one of the nicest guys he knew. My deepest sympathies to your family and the family of police officers. May you rest in peace.

Sev was a true Superman. There isn't one memory or thought that I have that doesn't bring a smile to my face or make me laugh out loud. He was on the job 24/7, the most dedicated man I've known. We had many talks about who had the best job in the world, he insisted it was him. Always talking about how much he loved it, all of it! He was a force, an unbelievable, irreplaceable force in life. He will be truly missed by everyone. He will always be Superman in my mind and in my heart. I love you Sev.

Corporal Severns was not only being a cop, but he was being a friend as well. He showed more concern for his friend than for himself and that is the number one definition of a hero.
God Bless and Rest in Peace, Brother.

While I did not know Cpl. Severns my deepest sympathies are extended to his family during this time of sadness and mourning.
While the present moment brings pain in the way that Cpl. Severns lost his life fulfilling his duty so bravely, in time it will be that all those who knew him will fondly remember all the joy and happiness he brought to so many and those who were enriched by his far to brief time on this earth.
I am sure that the South Bend community was a far greater, and safer place with Cpl. Severns on patrol and will no doubt celebrate everything that he was about in the coming days. The South Bend Police Dept. may have lost a dear colleague and friend, but we have gained another angel to protect over us all.

As a local restaurant owner, I see my share of familiar faces. Many of whom are local law enforcement members. I had the pleasure of meeting Officer Severns in lighter times when he the others came in for lunch some time ago. If it weren't for the work of the brave men and women like yourself, people like me would not be able to open our doors each day. I would like to thank you for your service to this community. Rest in Peace.. you will not be forgotten.

Even though I don't know Officer Severns I've shed my fair share of tears. As information became known to the public the respect for Scott has increased tenfold with each shred of info I hear about him. To Scott's family I'm sorry for your loss and pray that God gives you the shoulder you need to lean on during this time.
Your son was a blessing and set an example for many police officers and left a large set of shoes to be filled. His time was to short but he won't be forgoten

South Bend has lost one of its most beloved sons. By reading the reflections that have been left it is obvious that you were a great friend, cop and all around person. You will be missed. My prayers go out to your family, friends and the SBPD. Rest in peace Scott and watch over all of your brothers in blue. They are all mourning your loss. I will always pray for the unsung heroes that walk that thin blue line.
Our community has truly suffered an injustice. We can only hope that justice will be served and the criminal will pay. Our judicial system needs to make these people held accountable for their actions. It is pretty sad that a man intentionally took your life and does not even have the possiblity of facing the death penalty. He was old enough to carry a gun and make the choice to shoot you but not old enough to pay the same price you did.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
Rest in Peace Brother, we have the watch from here.
