Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns

Words can hardly fill the void that you have left in the law enforcement community, but they can begin the healing process for all of us. Another senseless act of violence has again taken one of our best and brightest, and while the flags will fly at half staff and the mourning bands will be displayed for a short time, our memories of you and your dedication to your community will last forever. Whether we knew you or not, we knew what you stood for. As the song goes, "only the good die young...", rest easy Cpl. Severns, your brothers have the watch now. My prayers and thoughts go out to the SBPD family and all of their loved ones.

Scott, after reading all the reflections left here, Im not sure whatever I leave will "measure up." I do know one thing. I know that God must have needed the best of the best to make his army one hero stronger on April 23rd. I see that he got just that.

You sir are nothing less than a hero to so many. God speed we have the watch from here.

There is destiny that makes us brothers,
No man goes his way alone.
All that we send into the lives of others,
Comes back into our own.

You can rest easy, Corporal Severns. The way you lived your life and your heroism in dying will forever be remembered by those you left behind whose lives you touched. God bless you and guide you safely to join your other fallen brothers and sisters.

I was a SBPD officer for 10 years. As a rookie I had Denny "big fish" Severns to look up to and learn from. He was the best street cop on the midnight shift when a dumb rookie like me needed help. He patrolled a beat like few I've seen and was a true policeman to the city of South Bend. Once his son scott joined the dept. he carried out the family business with dedication, professionalism and bravery. He had that "sixth sense" that good policemen have and obsolutely loved to work the street and still made time to talk to the people in the neighborhoods he patrolled. Even the "bad guys" liked him because they knew if Sev caught them they would be treated with respect and they were busted by the best in the business. I worked alongside Scott for years and even though I was a senior veteran, I learned from him how to be a better policeman. Just like I did from his dad.
To Denny and the rest of the family, we are so sorry for your loss and we will miss him dearly. Let us never forget the sacrifice he made with bravery and honor.
Love you brother aka "little fish"

Cpl. Severns,
You are an amazing officer. You are very brave and a outstand example of what wearing that badge really means. I am a former Sheriff's cadet and was for 4years. i respect everything officers do and pray for everyone of them everynight that they return home safely to their familys. RIP.

A POLICEMEN'S PRAYER!

Lord, I ask for courage;

Courage to face and conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go.
I ask for strength;
Strength of body to protect others...
Strength of spirit to lead others.
I ask dedication;
Dedication to my job to do it well...
Dedication to my community to keep it safe.
Give me, Lord, concern;
For all those who trust me...
And compassion for those who need me
And, please, Lord, through it all; be at my side.

I guess we can never understand why God takes the good ones. What helps me through all of this is knowing that you are watching us from above. Just know that you will always be in our hearts and will never be forgotten.

To Mr. Severns Family,
I have 2 cousins in Illinois who serve as police officers, and every day when I hear the old local news my heart stops when I hear an officer has been hurt. Just a few short months ago I loss a friend who was an off duty police officer out with friends for a night. When some idiot hit him in the head and ended up cause him to dye and leave small children behind. I guess I just don't know where we as a society have gone so astray and think that we shouldn't respect the police officers. You sure want them there if something happens to you then we respect them. I have 4 children and came from a tough town in Illinois where, my kids became afraid of the police. I believe in teaching my children to always know that the police are there to help they are the good guys. Maybe the two young men's mothers should of tought them something as simple as RESPECT and then maybe you would still be here helping and watching over all of us that truly respect and appreciate all that you do. To Scott's parents I will pray for you each day and hope that time truly does heal all wounds. I can't imagine the loss of a child no matter what age. Scott God is waiting to welcome you home a true Hero!!!! God Bless all of our Police Officers everywhere

Scott was the officer always used as an example of what a great officer was for all rookie officers entering FTO. I never felt like a police officer, not when I was sworn in, not when I graduated the academy nor when I first went out on the streets. I did not feel like a police officer until the night that I went on armed disturbance call with Scott. When all was said and done and the bad guys were caught and locked up, Scott walked up to me, shook my hand and told me good job. That is when I first truly felt like a police officer, when this great man acknowledged it. I can't help but remember how full of pride I was at that moment, how with just a few words simple words from him everything about our job seemed to make sense and everything felt worthwhile. Scott will forever be the example given to our new officers of what a dedicated and great officer is. We are lesser now with his loss, but we are far greater because of him then we ever could have been without him. You stood the line brother with your shield, and on your shield we carry you home.

I only met you a few times over a 10 year period but you always treated everyone with respect,you were one of the officers I would hear about that was in the middel of catching the bad guy or helping a victim. You became a hero the day you raised your hand and became a Police Officer, As I'm thinking of some other officers that went before you I'm sure they meet you with a smile and slap on the back. My prayers are with your family you will be missed
