Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns

I do not live, but work in South Bend and wanted to extend my condolences to the family, including Scott's trusted companion, Bruno..as well as Corporal Severns' many friends. I would also like to express the sorrow I feel to the SBPD for their loss of this heroic young man and comrade who paid the ultimate price, now holding the rank of "Blue Angel". I wish we could turn back time and that this senseless act would never have taken place, as his life was snuffed out by a punk who had no regard for life and hope it will be realized by the courts that he is a menace and danger to society. RIP Scott... and know your presence on earth, though it was far too short, speaks volumes of the man, friend and police officer that you were. I am sure you will never be forgotten. God Bless!

My heartfelt sympthay goes out to the entire Severns family, his friends, officer-brothers and the friend whose life he saved. I can't imagine what she is going through but I am praying that God give her the strength to overcome her grief. It is unfortunate that it takes a tragedy like this for people to recognize the efforts and dedication of our men and women in uniform. As a sister of a SBPD Officer my heart goes out to you and please know that I am grateful for your efforts to keep our streets safe. Scott, watch over us and especially your brothers and sisters in uniform!

No words can take away the pain that your family, friends and fellow officers are feeling right now. We can only grasp the memories and happy time we shared to help each other through this tough time. You were one of the best on the roll call and will be missed more that we can express. Watch down from above and help guide us all in the right direction and continue from above keeping the evil off the streets or South Bend.

Dear Severns Family, The heartfelt sympathy I feel for each of you as you face the rest of each of your lives without Scott may seem as though they are a repetition of so many others except I do know the hurt, agony and total emptiness in the days that will follow.Cpl. Tom Roberts was the love of my life and our future was destroyed much in the same way you lost Scott. I also know that a million and one tears will be shed not only today but for many to come.Out of having shared a life with someone who loved life so much how do we go on without them? I can promise you by taking it one minute at a time and then after awhile one day at a time. Good friends,(and you certainly know who they are in these times)and family will help you through.God is a strong source once the numbness wears off and you can actually think to pray. The blue brotherhood is untouchable when they stand together even in these times they can't let the hurt, pain and sorrow show that would make them seem weak to face all they must face on the streets every day. Scott will be another "Blue Angel" watching over us.Tom is waiting with a smile and a joke no doubt to welcome him to their new home. I know they are getting things ready for all their loved ones to join them.Gods Blessings to each of us who are left behind to face and continue life here until we all meet again.

Scott's vow and final act on earth was to serve and protect. I'm grateful to live and serve in a community marked by such character. My prayers are with Scott's family and friends who grieve over their, our, loss.

It takes an unbelievably courageous indvidual who devotes their life to law enforcement because their passion for doing the right thing outweighs any risk they face. The courage and strength for Cpl Severns to "always be on duty" exemplifies the word HERO and should never be minimized or forgotten. To his family and brothers in law enforcement, my family's prayers are with you and may it bring you comfort to know that God's army has gained immense strength by Cpl Severns prescense among it. Godspeed.

God grant me wisdom,
to tell a strike from a ball,
to know where to throw
and never to fall.

Keep me always in the base line,
running straight and true
and I'll look for your sign,
to stretch one into two.

God give me vision,
to see every pitch,
so if a player needs help,
then I will see which.

Let me always hustle,
so I'll be at my best
and take pride in myself,
in sports and the rest.

God be my strength,
when I throw the ball
when I'm far from home plate,
or against a wall.

So I never miss a base,
please guide my feet,
bring me home safely,
so my job is complete.

When I help younger players,
let me always give praise,
so they'll see you in me,
in all of my ways.

God please guide our coach,
to be fair and smart,
to teach us to be good,
let it come from his heart.

Let me take a loss,
just as well as a win,
to do any less,
is surely a sin.

As long as I can play,
let me make my parents proud,
as proud as I am,
when they yell MY name out loud.

However my games end,
let me always have fun
and if Heaven has All Stars,
I want to be one.

When my games here are over
and my seasons are done,
let me play on your team.
just like your son.

You are the ultimate hero!! I was involved in the citizen Police Academy last spring and met Scott then, what a great guy! When you take these classes, you really begin to feel part of the police family, and I along with others, is so deeply saddened by this senseless act and loss. Only time can help heal the hurt of Scott's passing, and my heart goes out to all his family, police and personal, God Bless You Scott!

God bless brother. May God be with your family and friends in their time of need. This poem was written by Detective Harry Koch, of the Maricopa County Sheriffs dept.

Somebody killed a policeman today
And part of America died...
And a piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.

The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too.
Just as if he had gone to war;
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast
To his name they will add a gold star.

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court
With counsel demanding his rights
While a young, widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long, lonely nights.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today...
Maybe in your town or mine,
While we slept in control behind our locked doors
A cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookie's side;
He answered the call...of himself gave all.
And part of America died.

As a friend of several officers my heart goes out to the family and friends of Corporal Scott Severns. I've seen the pain left in the eyes of fellow officers when an officer is killed. There is nothing we can do here, but pray for the safety of all our men and women working the streets to make our towns a safer place

I met Scott about a year ago when I participated in the SB Mishawaka Leadership Program. Class members had an opportunity to do a "ride-along" with a police officer. I picked the third shift hoping to see some "action". I rode with a friend of Scott's and we met up with him throughout the night. What I remember most about Scott was that he had a terrible terrible cold, it was freezing outside, his buddies were bugging him to go home but he would have not part of that. My first and last impressions of him was that he was all "cop". That ride along experience deepened an already deep appreciation for those who put their lives on the line every day and every night while we all go about our lives. I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to have met him - if only briefly. God speed, Cprl. Severns.

Growing up we never were able to share one common bond but now you are meeting this wonderful angel who is welcoming you with open arms. Even though you two never knew one another your lifes at the end were so similiar because both of you never thought about yourself. The only thing you both cared about was protecting others from pain. You both showed more dignity and courage than people show in a life time. I am glad to say that I knew both of you and look forward to seeing you both again.

I have asked my Lord to comfort you in a way that only He can. Scott will be remembered for his honor, courage and commitment. He will be missed, but never forgotten by all who loved him. As the wife of a fellow officer I am always a little apprehensive when my "hero" walks out the door in uniform, gets into his squad and drives out of our neighborhood. Will he be safe? Will he come back to his family? It's part of the job that each and every officer and his or her family have to face every day. It is what I knew I would have to face when I married this wonderful, compassionate, dedicated human being. You really don't think that something might happen when they're off duty. You kind of forget that those instincts and that dedication doesn't turn off when that uniform goes on the hanger. I'm sure that Scott never even hesitated in his actions that unfortunate night. The "wrong place at the wrong time" can happen to any of us but most don't have the skills to do what Scott did...without regard for his own safety he saved another's life. God Bless Scott, his family and all law enforcement officers everywhere. Be safe, stay alert, and come home to your families every day. Thank you for your service on and off duty to our community.
