Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns

Being the wife of an officer, I have come to realize that the Police family is very tight. A band of brothers and sisters that share a bond that no one will ever know unless you are one of them. I am proud to know these men and women and to consider them my friends.
Scott you lived with honor and died with honor. You were taken too soon, but you would be proud of how your brothers and sisters honored you on your final 10-42. God bless you Scott and your family. Keep watch over your SBPD family as they continue to fight crime, and know that we will all remember and honor you. HEROES NEVER DIE!

Being a rookie for the South Bend Police Department I didn't know you real well. I did, however, come across you a few times while on patrol. You were truly a GREAT COP. It is Officers like you that give our department a GREAT reputation. I am truly HONORED to say that I served with you although for a short time. I dont think you had any idea how much you were LOVED by your Community, your Family or your Fellow Officers. May you Rest In Peace.

I remember"Little Fish" as a very intense officer who stood his ground on several occasions. I remember him as one of the most, if not the most, proactive officers on the streets of South Bend. I remember his quick whitted remarks on just about every subject. He was good at that. I remember shaking his hand as he went to roll call the Thursday before his untimely death. He always took time for that. I remember him talking about his new golf clubs and how he was going to smoke me at Erskine the next time we went out. I remember when he stood at the 10th tee and said he would reach the green in two.(605 yards away) I remember when he smacked that Cobra and the ball flew atleast 320 yards down range, albeit into the adjacent fairway. I remember when he said, "That's okay, it opens up over there." He made it to the green that day in two. I know heaven has an open space for you my brother and I am sure you will be under par always. I remember......I miss my friend....

I have come back to this rememberance of Cpl. Severns numerous times in the last few days. I found the local paper for South Bend and read about his memorial service. In reading, I found this quote by Chief Fautz and it moved me:

Police Chief Thomas Fautz called Severns "a man among men," who died as he lived, "standing between good and evil."

That is a beautiful sentiment and I'm amazed at that love for Cpl. Severns that I've read here. These words, spoken so lovingly of him, have left a lasting impression on me. I thank the ones that share his memory with those of us not fortunate enough to have known this Hero.

You have my upmost respect.

Scott,
I had the privilege of meeting you through my husband and mutual friends. We will greatly miss you. Your time here was cut short. If we view time through God's eyes we truly understand how precious a gift is every hour we exist. You made the most of your time given. Your unselfish service has touched the hearts and lives of many. May you find rest and comfort in His dwelling place that He has prepared for you. We will rest easier knowing another Blue Angel is smiling down on us and watching over us.

Scott,
It has been one long week since your leaving us to be with our heavenly father. Your time on this world was way too short for us to get to grow old together with you and share our son, (your nephew Andrew "Bubba Chubbs"). We know that you loved him cause you had both of his pictures on your refridgerator door. We just found the card with the flowers you gave Brooklyn at the hosptial for Andrew. It made us smile and cry.
We both were pretty shakin' up with your passing. Your funeral was beautiful and with all the officers showing up to pay their respects;it was good enough for the President!
You were buried under a maple tree on a hill so you could see everything around you. We really felt that you were their at St.Matthews church when we arrived in the limo. As soon as we got out of the limo, Ave Maria was being sung and as soon as she finished the last note, we felt your presence. The wind blew right threw us and the color guards flags went straight into the air with the wind. That breeze was so cool and calm, we knew it was you. The service was good and the precession was even better. With 380 officers in their cars and 100 more on motorcycle, you recieved the royal treatment to your resting place. People poured out of their work places, houses and cars to see you. They lined the streets with American flags and signs wishing you eternal happiness. The bagpipes were awesome and the "taps" were great. We felt so at peace when leaving the cemetary.
We will forever miss you Scott. Our hearts will always be thinking of you and your smile. We love you, thanks for being a great brother and brother-in-law.

I will forever be YOUR Brooklyn.

I was fortunate enough to meet Scott my freshmen year at Bethel College in 1988-89. The next 3 years, I got to know him while traveling with the team as one of the bat girls. Scott became a good friend and he always had a smile on his face that could brighten anyone's day. I have so many good memories of Scott...playing a game of pool in the campus center, road trips to Florida for spring break, playing Euchre for hours on the bus, playing a tournament in what is now the stadium for the South Bend Silverhawks (to name only a few). He had confidence in anything he did. An all around great guy.

As the years went by, I moved away from Indiana. I had lost touch with Scott, but knew that he had joined the police department, like his father. Through mutual friends, I learned of this tragedy and my heart went out to the entire Severns family, his friends and to the city of South Bend. This is such a great loss, that words can not express. I am saddened that his life was cut so short, as I know he had so many goals set before him. The heroic way he gave his life to save another will never be forgotten.

I will not forget you Scott. And I trust that the rest of the people blessed by knowing you, will never let your memory fade from their minds.

To many people, he was known as Corporal Scott Severns, police officer. But to me, he was Scott, "Sev-dog", hero and my friend.

"Well done, my good and faithful servant..." We'll see him again in heaven one day. Until then Scott, we love you,

Scott, I didn't know you well. You used to stop at the Morris occassionally and good naturedly harass Cori Bair. I jokedly refer to the SBPD that work at the Morris as "my guys". I love them like brothers and they in turn love you as their brother. I helped send "my guys" and their friends off to your funeral with great sadness. I too know that you are in a better place with Paul, Randy and Kaz. God Bless you Sev!

My heart goes out to Cpl. Severns’ family, friends and fellow officers. I did not know Scott, but after yesterday’s funeral, I felt in some ways as though he was also my brother, as his funeral bonded him with Paul in the ultimate sacrifices they made. Although my focus was on Scott (so touching to hear about his life), his family and his police family, for me personally, it was a reliving of Paul’s funeral as well, and the impact is beyond words. I will forever be thankful to the police force and the community for the honor given to my brother and the respect shown to our family to this very day, shown so graciously to us yesterday. This honor and respect is now bestowed upon Scott and his family. It will not necessarily lessen their grief, but there is comfort in knowing the great support and love of so many. There is also comfort in knowing that Paul and Scott and other officers whose lives were taken too soon will never be forgotten. They lived a life of service, and they deserve that honor. They are a reminder, as well, of the service and sacrifices that all officers are giving of themselves every day. I am so sorry that another family has to experience the grief of losing a very special and wonderful person in Scott, as we did in Paul, and that the police force has suffered yet another loss of a brother. I wish you all peace. Thank you to all police officers for all you do to serve and protect.

I've known Scott for many years as a friend and a police officer, I worked with Scott's dad Denny, secuity at Martin's on Western ave, when I was on SJCPD. At the time Scott was a bagger at Martins and was just graduating from high school "He was a chip off the old block, like father like son". I knew that Scott would someday become a police officer and that would he be great at whatever he did. Scott had that kind of chip on his shoulder(towards only the bad guys)and a soft spot in his heart for all others, that made him a great officer. I remember talking to Scott at 7-11 about three weeks ago and I told him how proud I was of him and his accomplishments, one of Scott's goals in life was to make a difference in others lives and he succeeded the day I met him. Scott I love you and miss you "bud", I know your up there watching over me and my family and I feel a sense of security and safety. You may be gone but you will never be forgotten, forever in my heart.

True heroism. This man and his actions bring great credit to the Law Enforcement community. This is why I got into the business, and this is exactly how I hope to leave the business. Nothing tragic here, only Courage and Bravery at its finest. R/I/P

I was an afternoon shift uniform supervisor when I first met Scott after he started working the streets. I gave Scott the cold shoulder, and he sensed that. I thought he was kind of cocky, and being a rookie, would have to earn his keep. Scott knew what that was all about, as his dad, Denny, had served before him, and I am sure that Scott knew all about the police family. Shortly thereafter though, we got to be friends and got along well.

Scott always respected people. He was kind and caring, and would project that character without one even knowing he was doing that. I learned that Scott was a great person, both in Blue and at home.

He was a great uniform officer, and would later become a hard driving narcotics investigator: though his time in the unit was shortened (because of the animalistic stupid actions of his attacker, resulting in the taking of his life).

I had MY chance to work with Sev in the narcotics unit and on the SWAT team, and I thank God for that. There is no doubt that he made the Drug Unit step up to the plate and work hard. There was no slacking, and he was always wanted to do something. I was fortunate to be on the SWAT team with him, and he was one of the best. His tactics were unmatched, and his skill un-paralleled. I could not have felt any safer going into a building than with Sev. We all know that he is at the “front of the stack” now. I will miss him greatly.

Although I have many more years than him…in service, in the drug unit, and on the SWAT Team, I know that he was one of the best things happening to me. It is sad that we often don’t realize things like this until it’s too late. He was a true ally for me on the SWAT team, and I will miss him. I know that one day he would have left the drug unit to be a K-9 officer; that was his true passion and goal (his dad Denny was a K-9 officer). I wish he would have been able to reach that goal.

Scott was a HERO and Warrior, a brother officer that had a passion for police work, and a person that left his mark in all aspects of society. A Cop’s Cop. A great person. I love you Scott and wish you were still here. Your friends and co-workers are hurting from this, but your memory will help us get through this.

The funeral services which I attended on Friday were first class! I could not be more impressed with the support shown by South Bend, both by the city and the community. It is a shame such things have to happen to good people. I did not know Cpl. Severns, however there is no doubt he was a great person and a good police officer. Rest in peace Cpl. Severns!
