Reflections for Corporal Scott Lee Severns
Dear Family and Friends of Cpl. Severns,
I am one of many that did not have the honor of knowing Cpl. Severns but trust me when I say he is in our thoughts and prayers. I pray for his family and friends that knew him. Even his special friend Bruno. Life may go on but we'll never forget the man that laid his life down for another. Please know that Scott's courage has been laid upon many. He is flashing that infectious smile from above. The good Lord will help you all heal in time. Scott will see to it. My family and I went to visit Scott's memorial and his final resting place back in April. It was so touching. As we where standing there we watched many people approah and leave in tears. I met a lady that went to school with Scott and she cried as she was telling me stories about him. She said one thing she would always remember about Scott is how tall he was and his beautiful smile that would light up a room. I felt like I knew him at that moment. I thought that Scott could't have a prettier resting place underneath that tree. He would be so proud of all you. God Bless You All.

It's now been over a month since you were taken from us. The world moves on and we still mourn. We will truly never be able to just "move on." I too along with others still call your phone just to hear your voice. I know it won't be there forever. I dread the day I call and your voice is no longer there. I still drive by your house hoping to see you there. When I go to the station I expect to hear you call out "When are we going to lunch?" We wear a shirt in honor of you or put a superman sticker on our car for you. Yes, the world moves on, but for those of us who truly loved you we will continue to treasure the little things we have to remind us. We will never be able to forget you our friend our hero.
Your Little chief

The reflections are left less frequently now. The flags have returned to full flight and most businesses have removed your name from their marquees. Life starts to "get back to normal" for everyone. Everyone except those of us who love you most.
There is no "normal" any more, there never will be again. We still look at your picture 1000 times a day, we still look for your car when we're driving around. Some of us even call your cell phone and voice mail -- just to hear your voice. But all of these things are done with the realization that you are truly gone and won't be coming back.
Your absence is physically felt, Little Fish. And you will never be forgotten.

Scott, it saddened me to hear of your death. It seems like yesterday when we were kids on the team bus back in 1982 making jokes, teasing one another and singing songs.
One of my fondest memories of you is of us in the "little gym" at Dickinson Middle School during lunch and you refusing to leave the gym until you dunked that basketball. After a few tries, you did it! That was a testament to who you truly were-a competitor. You never quit until the job was done.
I know I speak for many of us who knew you when I say you will be missed. My only regret is that as time often does, it separated us and we never got to know each other as men.
Rest, brother.

Scott,
We are coming up to the month anniversary now. It is hard to believe that you aren't coming back to us. I have seen your picture so many times on the news and around the station, I just keep thinking you will walk in and smile at us.
Hope you are adapting to your time in Heaven because you have earned it.
God Bless

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Cpl. Scott Severns. I graduated the academy with Scott and roomed a few doors down from him. I have fond meories of our time at ILEA. My heart sank when my former roommate called to tell me the news. Scott was a decorated officer for SBPD, truly one of South Bend's finest. In my book you are a hero, sacrificing yourself to save another. I will never forget you, brother. Godspeed to you.

Scott,
I hope by now you and Bryan and Tom are all together watching over us all. I pray for your family and the family in blue which is left behind to try and figure out why such acts of violence continue. Please say a special pray for all officers and watch over us.

When God was creating peace officers, it was the sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order? Peace officers have to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle their uniforms."
"They have to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvas the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."
"They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half eaten meals. And they have to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shock his head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said God, "it's the three pairs of eyes the officer has to have." "That's the standard model?" asked the angel.
God nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before the officer asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When they already know, wishing they'd taken that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of the head for their partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, 'You'll be all right, sir,' when they know it isn't so."
"God," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," said God, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck:"
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" he asked.
"You bet," said God. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keep its sense of humor."
"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. It can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran his finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," he announced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said God. "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called a flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
God looked somber. "I didn't put it there," He said.

For a Hero I will never know!
For you the days are over, and you are no longer here,
To have seen you protect our streets with out any fear.
My brother in blue and protector of all,
You lost your life to violence, 10-42 the last call.
I never got to meet you, but knew you were always there,
Around the city of South Bend showing people that you care.
You were brave that night, with sacrifice you fell,
I promise you my angel, your story I will tell.
A man who protected, and gave us what he could,
Someone who died trying, defending what he should.
Scott you will be remembered for the hero that you are,
Always remembered as a bright shinning star.
A stranger you were, but no longer it seems,
That man too away all of your hopes and your dreams.
He shot you down and took you away,
For protecting someone that fateful day.
One thousand police cars and bystanders too,
Stood proud and tall in there red, white, and blue,
To salute to a man, one of their own
With the flags lowered, for honor was shown.
Twenty-one guns shot into the air,
With friends and loved ones saying it’s not fair.
The flag was draped right over you,
Why this happened nobody knew.
For you Corporal, this I shall give,
A piece of my heart and a chance to live.
Live through us and teach the way,
To my blue angel this I pray.
I pray for those now standing alone,
Wearing black uniforms and tears well shown
Roses surround you as you’re laid to rest
I give to you dear officer, all of my best.
To a man who stood and gave his all
10-42 Scott was your last call!!!

Scotty:
I saw Bruno getting his evening walk yesterday and he is looking good. You did such a wonderful job with him and he's been a little lost without you, as we all are. We know you are in a better place and that you always fought the good fight, but you are terribly missed. Take care up there and remember that we're thinking of you. I'll tip a cold one in your memory!

I met Scott in 7th grade & knew him all the way through LaSalle. He was the guy that was always laughing and always having a good time. I remember hearing “Sev-dog” in the halls and in the lunchroom. I can’t tell you how deeply saddened I am for his family and for our community. Scott became the police officer he was born to be. Scott’s death was a terrible, terrible loss to his family, friends and to our community. As an officer Scott displayed all of the strength, bravery, honesty - everything we want to instill in our children. Scott made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down his life to protect a friend. Scott – you truly are a Hero. May you rest comfortably in God’s arms and know that you will never be forgotten.
