To Reserve Officer Matthew Tuttle, his loved ones and his fellow officers in the Chelsea Police Dept.:

I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of another young officer killed in the line of duty. I am sure this loss devastated all those who loved Matthew and the Chief.

May his family be comforted by the warm embrace of their law enforcement family, and other police survivors who share this painful journey with you.

To Matthew, please know that your life is honored and revered today. Reading all the loving reflections left by those who cared for you gives us an understanding of what a good and honorable man you were and of the high esteem with which you are held. I also salute your service as a firefighter.

My heart is with your family and you are all in our thoughts and our prayers.

Matthew, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Matthew Tuttle. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Matthew gave to his community and the citizens of Michigan, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 13, 2006.

My deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Reserve Officer Tuttle and Chief Sumner as well as the City of Chelsea. For a small town to lose one of it's protectors is tragic, but to lose two in the same day is unquestionably an unbearable thing to have to face.

God Bless these brave men and may they rest in Peace. They will never be far from those who stayed behind.

"A MAN IN BLUE"

A man in blue has lost his life in service of law.
The love that makes this sacrifice the greatest love of all.
A Police man was killed today, the reason I cannot say.
I don't know why he had to die.
The man in blue died for me and you;
we must remember him too.
Flags fly low, let use bow in prayer
for fallen police men everywhere;
and remember this: that they are missed.
The badge burns bright like an evening star
free from a world of war.

Reality

Imagine how our world would be
If every police officer quit
Turned in their gun, turned in their badge,
Just finally had enough of it.

No respect, no loyalty,
No appreciation of all they do,
They’d give their lives for all of us,
These wonderful officers of “Blue”.

Kicked at, spit on,
Punched, stabbed and shot,
Everyday assaults on officers,
Done…without thinking a second thought!

Our laws are in favor of criminals,
There’s always some loophole in their case,
Out again to commit more crimes and murders
…creates pain, that we, the family and friends
…in time will never erase.

Why should they do it?
Why take the risk?
Why put their life on the line?
Subject their loved ones to endless suffering,
When their precious life is lost while fighting crime.

More murders, more kidnappings, more robberies and rapes,
Just to mention a few,
Please ask yourself how life would be,
If there were NO officers in Blue!

Would you do it? Could you do it?
And for how many…would YOU give it all?
Rewards are a 21 gun salute, a Medal of Honor,
And your name gets added to the Wall.

Think about it. Why are they here?
And why do some hate them so?
Because they enforce the laws that put convicts and murderers
In jail serving time, or on “Death Row”.

All give some and some give all,
It’s a risk they chose to take:
To put their heart and soul in it,
To put their lives at stake.

So, please take a moment,
Please give it deep thought,
Think of what “you can do”…

To help show respect,
To help follow the laws,
So we’d quit losing our Heroes in Blue!

I would like to express my sympathy to the family and friends of Matt Tuttle, I looked forward to getting to know Matt better since we met at the Police Reserve Officers Training @ Schoolcraft College. We had discussions about keeping in contact with each other after our graduation. Matt you will be missed and I look forward to meeting you again.

I would like to add my sincerest wish of condolence for Officer Tuttle's wife and family. To that, I would also like to add my own memory of Officer Tuttle after having met him in person at the Chelsea Fire Station in June 2004.
I had cause to meet Officer Tuttle after my husband was involved in a tractor-trailer collision on I-94 near Chelsea. Officer Tuttle was on the scene with my husband and stayed with him until he passed away there that day. Following my husband's passing, a family member contacted Officer Tuttle after reading an article in which he was quoted. That information was then passed on to me and I then looked up the Chelsea Fire Dept. online. I emailed Officer Tuttle and he graciously invited me up from Toledo to meet him and tour the station. About five weeks later, I took him up on his offer and saw first hand the great effort that was extended in trying to save my husband's life. I know first hand, the kind of deep unyielding pain that comes from losing a spouse. Knowing that Officer Tuttle was with my husband during his final moments made things a bit easier for me as I sensed that he did everything he could to bring a sense of comfort to him.
Too many times victim's families tend to blame those who are on the scene when the victim doesn't make it...I felt only gratitude to Officer Tuttle and the others who tried so hard to save my husband...and I hoped only to convey this when I met him in person. His quiet demeanor and gentle way regarding my husband will always be fondly remembered.
No words exist to bring comfort to a woman who has lost her beloved; I know this all too well. I can only promise to hold her in my every prayer.
God Bless,

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
