Reflections for Chief of Police Riley Scott Sumner
We spent countless hours together looking for "just one traffic stop". I wish I could get in the scout car with you now, to look for that one traffic stop. You died doing what you loved to do. Fairwell my friend.

To Chief of Police R. Scott Sumner, his loved ones and his fellow officers in the Chelsea Police Dept.:
I was so saddened to learn of the tragic death of another officer killed in the line of duty. I am sure the loss of these two fine individuals devastated all those who loved Matthew and Chief Sumner.
May his family be comforted by the warm embrace of their law enforcement family, and other police survivors who share this painful journey with you.
To Chief Sumner, please know that your life is honored and revered today. Reading all the loving reflections left by those who cared for you gives us an understanding of what a good and honorable man you were and of the high esteem with which you are held.
My heart is with your family and you are all in our thoughts and our prayers.
Chief Sumner, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Chief Sumner. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the nineteen years of distinquished service Chief Sumner gave to his community and the citizens of Michigan, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 13, 2006.

My deepest sympathies to the families and friends of Chief Sumner and Reserve Officer Tuttle as well as the City of Chelsea. For a small town to lose one of it's protectors is tragic, but to lose two in the same day is unquestionably an unbearable thing to have to face.
God Bless these brave men and may they rest in Peace. They will never be far from those who stayed behind.

"A MAN IN BLUE"
A man in blue has lost his life in service of law.
The love that makes this sacrifice the greatest love of all.
A Police man was killed today, the reason I cannot say.
I don't know why he had to die.
The man in blue died for me and you;
we must remember him too.
Flags fly low, let use bow in prayer
for fallen police men everywhere;
and remember this: that they are missed.
The badge burns bright like an evening star
free from a world of war.

Reality
Imagine how our world would be
If every police officer quit
Turned in their gun, turned in their badge,
Just finally had enough of it.
No respect, no loyalty,
No appreciation of all they do,
They’d give their lives for all of us,
These wonderful officers of “Blue”.
Kicked at, spit on,
Punched, stabbed and shot,
Everyday assaults on officers,
Done…without thinking a second thought!
Our laws are in favor of criminals,
There’s always some loophole in their case,
Out again to commit more crimes and murders
…creates pain, that we, the family and friends
…in time will never erase.
Why should they do it?
Why take the risk?
Why put their life on the line?
Subject their loved ones to endless suffering,
When their precious life is lost while fighting crime.
More murders, more kidnappings, more robberies and rapes,
Just to mention a few,
Please ask yourself how life would be,
If there were NO officers in Blue!
Would you do it? Could you do it?
And for how many…would YOU give it all?
Rewards are a 21 gun salute, a Medal of Honor,
And your name gets added to the Wall.
Think about it. Why are they here?
And why do some hate them so?
Because they enforce the laws that put convicts and murderers
In jail serving time, or on “Death Row”.
All give some and some give all,
It’s a risk they chose to take:
To put their heart and soul in it,
To put their lives at stake.
So, please take a moment,
Please give it deep thought,
Think of what “you can do”…
To help show respect,
To help follow the laws,
So we’d quit losing our Heroes in Blue!

Scott,
Words can't express the sadness that this last week has brought. I can't begin to thank you enough for a friendship of over 20 years, and for inspiring me to become a police officer. I owe my sucess to you for showing me what "dedication" truly meant. To sit through your funeral and listen to the reflections of your peers made it that much harder to accept. People loved you and always will. You were a true leader, a wonderful friend, husband and father. You will always be in my fondest memories and I will always cherish the good times that we had together. May god bless you and your family...Rest in Peace My Frined! Some day I will see you again.....
