Reflections for Patrolman T. Micheal Byrd
No words can express how sorry I am about the passing of a great brother and friend... He wore the uniform with great dignity... he was example to us all. To his wife and son thank you for who you allowed him to be... To Sheriff Byrd and his wife thank you for raising a fine young man... To the Pascagoula PD we will never forget #137... May God bless and Keep the Family and Friends of "Little Mike".

It is a sad day to learn that one of my fellow officers watch has ended here on this earth. It seems that my shield is always covered by the black ribbon all to often these days.
I am proud of "Little Mike" and all my fellow fallen brothers, what better way to spend a life than standing for truth, courage and justice. To be that thin blue line that protects and serve.
To the Byrd family I`ve know most of you all my life. We have worked, laughed and played together. Now I greive with you in this time. My prayers, thoughts and loves goes out to you all. In leaving I want you to know how proud I am of you all,the courage and the example you have been to all the police families.
God now has another of my bothers walking the steets of gold.

For all of us that new "little Mike" we all have at least one story to tell about him some funny and some sad. I can remember when we were younger and would go up to the camp with his dad every spring and summer it was time to clean, as much as i loved to go up there and spend time i always hated when it came around because i knew his dad was fixing to work us until we couldn't walk, we always had to gather the limbs in the yard and shovel the mud from underneath, the funniest time is when we were up there and his dad was wead eating and as scared as he is of a snake i happened to look over at him just in time to see the weedeater drop and draw his gun and shoot at a snake in the weeds and michael didn't know it till he shot and it scared him to death. Then the time we were at the church lock-in and we dressed him as a girl, and all the times we would jump off the bridge during the summer by the house, and the cookout we had at the house last year when he caught me from behind and dragged me to the water still dressed and through me in. I will never be able to forget that sideways smile he had and the ability that he had to make me feel better when i was having a hard time just by talking and being there, he always carried a smile on his face even when it was hard at times he could always find a way to make it better either by a good joke or a thoughtful talk. Michael you will always be loved and missed by everyone that knew you so now i'm asking you to help watch over us as you have always done and help us dry our tears as we weep. Sheriff, Mrs. Terry, Ashley, and Steven it will be hard for a long time but ya'll always remember that michael left us doing what he loved to do and that he will always be a whisper away and he is watching from up above guiding you along the way, michael accimplished his mission here on earth and god said that it was time for him to rest in peace and walk a beat on heaven's street. Michael will always be loved by the people that new him and never forgotten by the people who's life's he touched, times are tough now but just know that michael his happy and free waiting to greet all of us at heavens door. Michael we are all so proud of you and don't worry because as we grieve your loss together we will console one another and make sure everyone makes it, and yes we will all help ashley with the yard work since she says she doesn't know how to work the new mower. WE ALL LOVE YOU MICHAEL AND REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND AND I WILL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE UNTIL THEN I WILL MAKE YOU PROUD.

Although I can not remember Officer Byrd, I was one of the lucky officers who was allowed to travel to Pascagoula, MS after Katrina hit last year as Nevada One, we were able to see first hand the strong department that the officers in Pascaqoula shared and love of their community after the storm passed. So many of your officers lost something, if not everything, but you still came to work and stayed long hours to police your hometown. I am proud to say that I was part of the team that was able to assist you in helping with your loss. As all of the offciers of the Pascagoula Police Dept must now again gather over the greatest loss of all, a fallen brother, may you all stand tall together and continue the life work you and Patrolman Byrd have choosen. God Bless Terry and his family.

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor - they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.
Amen.
Terry, rest easy brother, we have the watch.

I would like to send my prayers and sympathy to the Bryd family.
I had the honor of teaching Mikey in the academy. No matter what I threw at him, he bounced back with a smile...determined to be the best cop he could be. All Mikey wanted to do was help his people. There's not too many officers like him anymore.
God bless you Mikey.

When Jesus met Mary and Martha at Lazarus' funeral he wept. He wept because of the compassion he felt for the family. He prayed "Thank you father, that you have let this happen that they may see your glory." In the pain Mary and Martha felt was buried the seed of God's glory. But Jesus' compassion was no less moved for his family.
Jesus feels that compassion now for Michael's wife, son, mother, father, and family. We pray that they feel His tears and in them find solace that is His glory. We pray that we see the glory of God in Michael's compassion, tireless devotion to his beautiful wife, his love of Christ. And in that crooked smile. We pray that we see God's glory in Ashley's courage, her impeccable character and her kindness. We pray that their son be given the best of his parents and that God's glory shines in his life as one of His own. The bible tells us a tree is judged by it's fruit. Michael's character bears testimony of the kind of parents he had. God's glory shines in them.
The grief his family and community feel now is real, but no less real is God's glory. Mary and Martha saw the glory of God immediately when Lazarus rose from the grave. Though we must wait for our reunion, Michael's resurrection was no less immediate. The bible assures us that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. My dearest Ashley, there is sorrow that Michael is absent from us, but glory that he is present with his Jesus.
I pray the comfort, peace, and glory of Christ's tears upon you.

News of something like this travels fast.....and I am not sure how one fully accepts the reality of it, but I guess we all have no choice.
'Baby Bird', as I called him, was no stranger. I worked for Pascagoula for 3 years before moving to Memphis. I can remember so many stories, but one, in particular, makes me laugh. He was not an officer at the time, but I used to swing by their house on patrol and hang out. His dad(MIKE) was running for Sheriff and lots of individuals were simply offerring their support.
Baby Bird told me that Mike was deathly afraid of snakes, so the wheels began turning and I went and got a rubber snake. Baby Bird said, Oh my God...he will shoot it if he thinks it's real". That made it even funnier to me, so I laid the rubber snake outside of Mikes car door, knowing that he was about to leave. Nothing like a good plan coming off 'as planned'. Mike walked out, and when he reached his car, saw the snake on the ground and the dancing began. He was to scared to think about his gun, but he did scream like a woman and dance his way out of danger from the lurking rubber snake. Baby Bird and I laughed our rear-ends off and once Mike realized what had happened, he toughened up a bit and said, your lucky I didn't shoot that thing....but you could see that he wanted to laugh, but knew that he had been , "had".
Mike, do not loose these memories. Hold them close and he will never be gone. I leave you with a poem I wrote several years ago that I believe is appropriate. I wrote it just before I graduated from the same academy Baby Bird went to.
A POLICEMANS PRAYER
DEAR LORD AS I STAND BEFORE YOU,
MY BADGE SHINES WITH HAPPINESS TODAY,
I HAVE OVERCOME MANY OBSTACLES, AND HAVE MADE IT ALL THE WAY.
A POLICEMAN, TODAY AND FOREVER, THATS ALL I WANT TO BE...........
SO LORD AS I STAND BEFORE YOU, I ASK THAT YOU SAFELY PILOT ME.
DEAR LORD,I KNOW THE DANGERS INVOLVED, AND THAT IT COULD COST ME MY LIFE, SO IF I SHOULD DIE WHILE DOING MY PART, BLESS MY FAMILY AND MY WIFE.
JUST LET THEM KNOW, AND MY LITTLE BOY TOO, THAT A PART OF ME REMAINS, WITHIN THE HEART OF EVERY COP, MY LEGACY THEY CONTAIN.
AND IT WILL BE PASSED ON DOWN THE LINE TO THOSE WHO WEAR THE NAME,
OF POLICE, SHERIFF AND HIGHWAY PATROL, FOREVER IT SHALL REMAIN....AMEN

Dear Mikey, You are so missed already. Your bright smile and great sense of humor brightened many of my days. You told me to "Become addicted to JESUS" no matter what anyone else said and that mean't so much to me. To the BYRD family I know that you all know he is with God and smiling at us all saying "I'll see you again".
God Bless you all
