Reflections for Sergeant Gerard Walter Burke, Jr.
Sarge....you commanded respect from the public and from your peers, which is the ultimate compliment. You worked tirelessly to clean up the city and led from the front. You were the definition of a "street sergeant." More importantly Sarge, you were a great person - so much fun to be around. You will be deeply missed.
Hold it down during roll calls up there. Godspeed brother...

During the occasions that I had to work with Burke as an officer at the Fourth District, he leaves me with nothing but pleasant memories. He was a great comfort to me after the loss of my friend and colleague MPO Brian Gibson. He will be sorely missed!

Sarg, I see you standing at the top of the steps just before you left. We were joking back and forth as you walked out the door, if I had only known that it would be the last conversation I would have with you. I will never forget hearing "3020" oh how I wish I could hear it again. You are the real police, and I will miss you! Dont worry, the garden nome is safe with us and we will keep using your sledge hammer to knock in those doors. Rest well my friend!

We are saddened once again with the sad news of another hero taken from us. It is a great loss for the family and department during this crisis. We might not know the right words to say, or even know how to say them, but we can pray for your family and friends. May the Lord give them strength through this time.

“In The Line Of Duty”
In Memory Of All Police Officers
Who Have Been Called To Make The Ultimate Sacrifice
What is the meaning of "In The Line Of Duty"
It means that an officer made the Ultimate sacrifice.
It means that someone took an officers life.
A hero has fallen. Officers who gave their all
To protect and serve us
Have been killed by someone whom they swore
To protect and serve.
It means that their badge will no longer be on their chest
And they will join "The Best Of The Best"
It means that family and friends are left behind
To deal with the lost of a loved one.
Only having the memories of that loved one
Close to their hearts. Something no one can ever take away.
It means that family members will stand at the officers grave
And wonder why... Why would someone take an officers life
And leave them there to die?
If we only knew. Today an officer will place their badge on their chest
To fulfill the dreams of heroes killed "In The Line Of Duty"

Sarge it's only been a day and you’re already missed. I will never forget the things you taught me, and true friendship you showed me. You will always be a part of my life, and I hope after 16 years I am half the police officer that you are. I know you are in a better place protecting the streets of Heaven with all of our brothers and sisters that have gone before us. Don't worry either when I get back I'll make sure I keep Mahl Park under control. May God continue to Bless and protect our families and us until we meet again.

We are so sorry to here about your tragic loss of a loved one in law enforcement. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you in support. As we personally know, sometimes there is little comfort that comes from words. Keep focused as you can on the memories and joyous times for these things may bring you comfort. Rely heavily on family, friends, and other law enforcement. Honor your fallen loved one, for their sacrifice will not be forgotten.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.
