Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Pierre Walter Bain

I was so saddened to hear of the death of Deputy Pierre Bain. I had the very good fortune to be his teacher and coach druing his junior high school years. Even at that young age, I knew that God had given this world a very special person. Diane, we want you and his daughters to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of loss. God bless you all.

Pierre's untimely death on March 23, 2006, was tragic for many reasons: He was a law enforcement officer putting his life on the line every day; he was a husband; he was a father; he was a good man who contributed to the betterment of our community; he was also a friend..., someone who occupied a special pedestal in the recesses of my memory.

Pierre and I attended Trinity Lutheran Jr. High School in Reseda, California in the early 1970's. We played on the same basketball team, the Mustangs, as fourteen-year-old athletes with a tireless passion and dedication to the game.

Pierre, however, was truer to this passion and dedication than was I. You see, in the Spring of 1974, Pierre and I quit our team because of a silly disagreement we had with our coach (who, incidentally, is a stellar man, and who I love and respect to this day). What set Pierre and I apart as men, however, was that shortly thereafter, he was wise enough and man enough to rejoin the team and complete the season. As for me, instead of setting my ego aside and making the right decision as Pierre had done, I remained stubborn to the end and chose to sit on the sidelines as my teammates played on without me. Indeed, bad teenage decisions carry the kick of a shotgun blast...

What makes Pierre's death even more tragic is that I did not know -- until after I heard of his death in the news -- that he lived and worked only a few miles from my home in Palmdale. I am haunted with regret because of this lost opportunity. I will miss him greatly.

Someday, somewhere, somehow, Pierre and I will again wear our blue and gold jerseys and play a game of one-on-one on that black-top parking lot of our youth. Maybe then he'll finally let me win a game...

I went to high school with Pierre, and we were friends. I have not seen him for many years, but I will always rememeber him as a great guy with a tremendous sense of humor. I can't believe he is gone.

In Valor there is Hope.

Policeman's 23rd Psalm

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want,
His comforting hand reduces fear to naught;
He makes me walk through streets of crime,
But He gives me courage and peace of mind.

He leads me by still waters in the path I trod,
And He says in Romans I'm a "minister of God,"
He leads me in righteousness as He restores my soul,
For His name's sake He keeps me whole.

When I walk through death's valley, right up to the door,
I will fear no evil, for He comforts me more;
For Thou art with me every step of the way,
As thy rod and thy staff protect me each day.

He prepares a table, especially for me,
As I work daily among life's enemies;
He gives me authority to uphold the law,
And He anoints my position in the midst of it all.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me,
Each day of my life through eternity;
As I long to hear Him say, "Well done...,"
When I lay down my life, my badge, and my gun.

My most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers of Deputy Bain. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

To his wife and daughters: I lost my husband in the line of duty one year ago, and am left to raise 2 children on my own. This is a very painful journey that none of us wanted to take. Please know that you do not walk this path alone, but with many others who have suffered similar losses. I pray you find the comfort you need to get you through this tragedy.

Deputy Bain, thank you for your service and sacrifice. May God bless you and may you rest in eternal peace, forever safe in the arms of the angels.

Diana, my heart goes out to you and Pierre's family, I will alway remember him with a smile on his face and a quick laugh even when the joke was on him. What you two had together was truly special he really loved you, you could see it in his face. You introduced him to "the dogs" and he found something else to love and a whole group of new friends. Because he was like that always friendly,always helpful,and so full of life. I hope you find some piece in knowing all your friends are thinking about you and Pierre, we will miss him to. Anything you need just let your "collie family" know, I want you to know that we may be competative in the ring, but we really are an extended family outside the ring, and that is where it really matters.

"What a nice guy', we all thought when we first met Pierre. We had spoken with Diana at length about her beautiful collie pups and spent a day with her and Pierre selecting our new puppy to take home that day. While there talking with Diana, who was so lovely, helpful and informative, Pierre entertained our son by showing him their home- the chickens, collecting eggs for Ryan to take home, showing him his motor bike and then chatting with us. We were all impressed by the home they had toghether because it seemed filled with the immense love Diana and Pierre had for other. We were delighted that in coming to choose a new family member, we had met such a lovely couple.

Our hearts go out to Diana and Pierre's three daughters. The loss must be immeasurable. We know he was one of the good guys and you were all the lucky ones to have had him in your lives. We are so sorry for your loss.

With our deepest sympathy,

Mandy, Bjorn and Ryan Gustafsen.
