Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Joseph Tim Whitehead, Jr.

To the family and friends of Deputy Joseph Whitehead and his fellow officers in the Bibb County Sheriff's Dept.:

I was so saddened to read of the death of another young officer in the line of duty. On behalf of our entire family, we extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Joseph was brutally murdered.

May you find comfort in your faith and the support of your law enforcement family and other police survivors. There will be many people to stand beside you each step of this painful journey.

Heaven may have another hero today, but how I wish this had not happened to your beloved Joseph. All of Joseph's loved ones are in our prayers. It is heartbreaking to know that another family has lost their husband, father, and son.

Joseph's valor, courage, and dedication will never be forgotten.

I also hope that Joseph's family gets the full measure of justice they deserve.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Joseph gave to his community and the citizens of New Mexico, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 22, 2006.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow officers of Deputy Whitehead.

While no one who wears a badge wants to be put into such a situation, you put yourself into the line of fire to protect those whom you might not have even known despite the danger. While I did not have the privilege to have known him personally, I am certain that he has found a place in heaven.

Rest in peace my friend; those of us who remain will cover your post on the thin blue line.

Judgment Day for a Police Officer
.....Author Unknown

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my work was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep,
I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the Throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

God Bless
