When we were advised this morning that a Bibb County Deputy had been shot and killed in the line of duty, we were hoping that there was no truth to it. Unfortunately, with just a few phone calls, we were able to confirm that it was indeed true.

Our hearts go out to the men and women of the Bibb County Sheriff's Department during this difficult time. To the family, friends, and loved ones of Deputy Whitehead, know that we are with you during these times in thought and in spirit. When we lose one man or woman in law enforcement we all hurt. You could see the mood change instantly when we confirmed that this tragedy had occurred. Everyone from dispatch to patrol stayed on edge for the rest of the shift. You can't help but think about how it could have just as easily happened to you instead.

To the men and women on scene w/ Deputy Whitehead when this occurred, we know that you are going through a lot of grief and pain at this time. Remember that you did everything you could to help your brother officer and that you have done him proud by making sure that the people responsible for his death will be punished to the full extent of the law.

To the wife and children of Deputy Whitehead, remember that he was a hero and that he served his community well day in and day out. He and his contributions to the community will not be forgotten. The pain won't go away, but one day you will begin to heal some how some way.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

Lord,
He was yours to give,
and yours to call home,
please stand by his brothers,
so they don't feel alone,
dry the tears of his family,
so they clearly see:
that he gave his all,
so all could have peace.
Blessed are they,
the children of God,
with heavy hearts,
and honor - they trod,
to pay their respects,
to give their salute,
and to ask for your mercy,
on heroes in Blue.
Amen.

Joseph, rest easy brother, we have the watch.

Deputy Whitehead died a hero...just as he lived his life. I like to think he has gone home to his Lord in Heaven and that he's joined the legion of law enforcement officers already there. That helps to comfort me, and perhaps the Whitehead family will find comfort in that thought.

Deputies of Bibb County: Hold your heads high and every day, remember your brother officer. That way his death is not in vain. He lives on in his family, but also in you all. Keep him in your hearts and visit his family to keep them safe. They will find comfort in your presence.

Know that we don't thank you often enough for the work you do, the risks you take and the sacrifices you make.

God bless you, Whitehead family and God bless the men and women of the Bibb County Sheriff's Department. You are loved and appreciated.

Love,

Deputy Whitehead, thank you for your many days on the beat, you are a true hero and loved by many. You are in a better place working for a better boss. And to the family & co-workers & friends of Deputy Whitehead. We know your heart is broken, it will be hard to get to sleep tonight. It will be hard to face tomorrow, and next week and next month and then it will be a year. And your feelings will still be raw. And your life will never be the same without this one person. The lives he touched while on earth and he never knew it.I know we lost one also EOW: 04-24-02. His name is Scott and TIME is slowly healing and we will never forget him. And my heart goes to his family and children, because it will be so hard for them to understand and to forgive. Each day they will be waiting for him. And for his friends, never will get the chance to talk with him again. And, with his co-workers there will be such a void. Someone walking down the hall just like he did, or a voice that will sound like him. Or a reflection of someone. And each day for quite some time he will be on their minds. And the hatred you will have in your hearts for the person who did this is so strong, and I'm sure God will forgive you all. Because thats what he does. God bless you Deputy for a job well done. 270

I feel that this quote sums up the feelings of all...

It's not how these men and women died that makes them heroes, it's how they lived.
